***UPDATE – Replacement Mug On The Way – Mission Accomplished*** I just posted an update here: /gallery/HGK2fVV

imo, this might be a good use for craigslist. Not sure how effective it will be, but you can post an ad in the local ones and see if anyone responds.

Good suggestion. I'd not considered that. Thanks!

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

No problem. Good luck!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Worse comes to worst, take a pottery class and make a new one! Could even be a fun couples activity together.

Went on an Alaskan cruise in 2017. Same stops. Dope experience. Good luck with replacing the mug. You are a GOOD HUSBAND!

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm in a similar situation, I'm considering kintsugi as a repair.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My aunt went to the UK for my cousins wedding and splurged on an absolutely gorgeous mug and....it goes smashed on the way home. So I helped her kinsugi it and it's cute af, would recommend

I'm going on an Alaskan cruise next summer if it has not yet been replaced and if I see it I will buy it for you. And I will ship it once I get back to the states.

Honestly, as an alaskan, Literally Any tourist shop or grocery store up here will have similar themes for mugs (Pines, Bear, Bear Paw, Stars, Founded Date, but finding an exact copy seems like a fools errand.

Starting to think I should be buying extras of mugs I find interesting.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...Or, just don't drop them like I did... 😀

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but I know how far "Don't do the thing," goes.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you check receipts or bank records? Can you narrow down the city you were in when you bought it? Can google maps help you locate the place?

2 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is an absolutely brilliant suggestion!

Try Reddit r/HelpMeFind and other subs like that. Those people are geniuses.

I'm loving how so many people have come together to help OP with their search. IT gives me warm fuzzy feelings inside. It's stuff like this that keeps me coming back.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Folks have been amazing with this.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could also look into this sort of idea

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

OP needs all the missing pieces. If he's swept it into the trash already in order to prevent hazardous obstacles, then that is not entirely feasible. Possible still to make some rendition, but it will forever be missing that final component. The art lies in that it still looks whole, but with an imbued accent.

Several folks have made the same suggestion. It may be an option I consider. Thanks for the recommendation.

My wife lost a single earring on a trip with our son. He used Google lens, found the earrings and had me order a replacement pair which were waiting when they got back. These little things are some of my favorite uses of modern technology.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife and I were just discussing the same thing last night. There have been a ton of super helpful and friendly folks trying to help with this. I've got a few leads on this. Hopefully, I'll have an update for everyone soon. Thanks again.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a real bummer, sorry. I've done some quick searches myself and found nothing even close to that. Most likely you'll have to hope for someone who lives near an Alaskan tourist spot. I once broke a pearl pin that was my wife's favorite and could never find a replacement.

Thanks for your help!

If its mass produced there will be a makers mark on the bottom. If its a one-off take it to a local potter for a referral.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thanks so much. We did find the store information. I’ve contacted them. Once I hear back I’ll let everyone know the update. Thank you for your offer to help.

Check up that Japanese/Chinese art (forget which one) of mending broken items with gold. Obviously, you might be able to find a cheaper alternative to gold

2 years ago | Likes 235 Dislikes 6

That is going be difficult to do in a way that's food-safe (especially microwave-safe, which you'd want for a mug)

Shibari I think?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Noodles

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

Exactly, wide range of money options, from gold to ramen noodles

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Solder would be cheap and easy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they use gold-colored (usually powdered gold in it or with gold leaf applied to the surface) lacquer rather than just gold. Which shouldn't be too expensive, a 10-pack of 24k gold sheets (~3.5 inches square each) is only like 25 bucks.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's actually the poison I'm poison ivy, the urushiol mixed with gold. If you promise to be careful they let you buy it. Otherwise you should probably use something like resin

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

glue springs to mind

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This this this! Kintsugi makes the original even more special, rather than getting a replacement that will never be 100% the same. Add to its story!

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Should have also mentioned, it's gold dust, not actual gold. And you can find kits with everything you need on Amazon! The practice comes from the Japanese philosophy that things that are broken can be made even more beautiful by their cracks and imperfections, and it's history is made more rich and memorable by the experience.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The cost of gold would not really make much difference. The artist's time is what costs. And shipping back to the states.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think they ment try their hand at doing it. There is plenty hobbyists of the craft. Might have someone local.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Kintsugi

2 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 0

This! The real memento fixed and made better will be a much better celebration of a long marriage than a duplicate.

2 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

The gold rush in AK was a big thing, too, so it is also totally on brand.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This would be possible if OP has all the pieces. Even that small wedge that is missing. The concept is to make it whole. Not to replace. While it is possible OP has all the broken shards, by this point in time... it's more feasible he's swept it all into the trash to clear now-hazardous components.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP ordered a replacement, but just for the sake of sharing knowledge: it is actually possible to use the same kintsugi method to "remake" those missing wedges by layering enough of the gold paste and sanding it down to be even with the ceramic. Although it's quite difficult unless you already have some skill with those kinds of projects, so I'd recommend taking it to a professional artisan at that point.
