This coffee cup was prompted by astronaut Donald Pettit's efforts to drink coffee in space more easily. Being an engineer, he used what he had on station to build the first generation space coffee cup. A team of researchers at Portland State University (designed by Mark Weislogel, Andrew Wollman, John Graf and Donald Pettit) did this one. Don's sixth flight is coming up this September. He'll become the second-oldest NASA astronaut in history at 69 years of age.
Don Petits keynote talk at Neaf a few years back was wonderful. Guy is seriously inventive, using a power drill to invent a barn door tracker for taking high speed photos of the Earth from the ISS. He is also hilarious too.
It makes it easier to drink. I don't really recall the physics of it, but the shape somehow keeps the liquid in the container. You have to drink from the pointy v-shaped side. The addition of the wings made it easier to suck the fluids out.
"I have access to the internet. I probably don't use the internet to its full potential. I enjoy terrible puns, sweet food, WordPress and beer." You should also add, "I can't think of anything original so i steal other peoples comments."
So, just so I understand, I have to rub this 6 inch tube vigorously with my right arm, place my mouth towards the end of the tube and then various substances will fly out of the tube towards my face? And I will have to open my mouth to catch them or they cover my face? That's right Sandra. It was the design chosen by Steve. And you need to get moving with that hand Sandra, or you'll go hungry tonight.
The job requires alot of qualifications that humans naturally find attractive. They must be smart, sane, physically fit, get along with other etc. I'm barley smart and it's a hard no on the rest. No space for me.
They must be quite fit and are training to remain that way. Be healthy and life to remain that way. They are usually highly qualified scientists too and that at a relatively young age, which requires a lot of discipline and self organization. Are quite dedicated and enthusiastic about what they do, since you need to be that to put up with all that and get that far. It's probabbly quite a boost to ones self confidence.
All these are things that tend to make people attractive to a lot of people.

Yonic. The word of the day is 'yonic'. Yonic is to vulva as phallic is to penis.

Is it special for coffee or is it for any drink?

I’ve talked to Don on the phone. The man is wildly intelligent and incredibly personable

I made a slight mistake. https://www.supercluster.com/astronauts/donald-r.-pettit?q=Donald%20Pettit&sort=undefined&ascending=true&limit=63& This will be his 4th flight (not his 6th).

Surface tension makes the liquid flow to where the sides are closest together. The "wings" give your lips a place to seal to.
