Huh. I lived in Rossmoyne for a couple of years. Did not know about this.

I guess you just don't use it if it rains. Or snows. Or if the wind is too wild.

If only he'd tried selling them in Japan.

I couldn't quite go that small because of my job, but I do vastly prefer smaller vehicles. I hate driving anything bigger.

And here I am riding an electric unicycle through Manhattan traffic for my commute.

That side by side photo with a normal sized car makes me question the safety

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Better to just get a motorbike. Less frills, more height. Can fit just as much shopping.

You want to allow women to go out in public wearing trousers (Pants) and not long modesty skirts! You Cad sir!! You'll be wanting them to work and vote next!!! ;-)

I liked the idea that you could build a car back in the day. Midget cars were simple and probably the most awesome thing you could build with family for their first car.

I would doodle so hard in that bug.

If 2 or more Brogan Doodlebugs meet on the road , by law they must bump onto each other.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: Doodlebug also refers to a type of diesel-driven passenger railcar used in the US. They got their nickname from their perceived resemblance to pillbugs, as well as their habit of gently swaying, or "doodling," along the track.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it was the name of a type of ww2 bomb as well

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Lindsey Graham is a fan of those cars. I know I remember reading about but him having a collection of doodlebugs

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lmao it's almost impossible to convince the average American to drive a reasonably-sized car NOW, never mind back when big cars (and gasoline) were extremely cheap.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Used to think like that, especially seeing smallest US apartments were size of big family ones where I lived. But hey smoke em if you got em

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why would you want a reasonable anything if you can go big?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've never wanted a large car (or a car at all for that matter as I've lived in Manhattan for the last 20+ years) but those little smart cars came out, I desperately wanted one! It seems so reasonable and efficient to get around a city. But I'm way too scared I would get crushed in an accident with all the huge cars people drive. Feels like a better idea for Europe.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Modern city cars are actually very strong and designed to help you survive crashes with larger vehicles, it's things like American "trucks" (oversized utes) that are absolute garbage in crashes. I'd rather be in a Toyota Yaris than a Dodge Ram 1500 in a crash.

I, too, look like an escapee from an amusement park

Amusement park/mental asylum. Tomayto/tomahto.

That’s known as a “Carnie (also “Carny”)

Which one? I escaped once from Bobbejaanland in Belgium.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think you're supposed to refer to the psych ward as an amusement park.

I’m more of a bemusement park person myself.

Tiny cars like this were more popular in postwar Europe. There was a whole category of microcars. My favorite is the Messerschmitt KR200 (yes the same company that made German fighter planes in WWII). It was effectively an enclosed scooter. You may have seen one of these being driven by Cousin Itt in The Adams Family movie from the 90s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Midget the King Midget, out of Lima, Ohio. Is my personal fav. Helped a neighbor who had one change the tires and all i had to do was lift the whole care lol.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You still see some being made. Most commonly in Japan where they have Kei cars. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kei_car

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They were popular because there were still rampant material and fuel shortages after the war. It took years for the governments to stop rationing food and other essentials.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I think the market died in the 60s as recovery took hold. Japan still has a market for tiny cars, Kei Cars. I think they were originally created for the same reason, but stuck around mostly due to tax and insurance incentives.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not just that, but Japan has roughly half the population of the US crammed into a land mass the size of California. Space is at a premium, and many people don't have the room for a normal-sized car. If you want a car in a major city like Tokyo, you first have to prove you have somewhere to park it before you're allowed to buy it.

I would love one of those

You can sign up for an Elios. They've been almost producing cars directly about a decade now. Or import a K Car from japan.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me, too! I wouldn't fit in one, but I'd love to have it!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If Jeremy Clarkson can fit into a Peel P50, you can fit into one of these.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What? JC got into one of those? Holy cripes!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

45 mph (so it'd be ok on local streets) and y-mpg? Sign me up.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Other than having more wheels, that's my Honda SuperCub. I love getting to cruise around town on it. As long as the errands don't need too much cargo, I have a great time. It even gets nearly 100 mpg. Filling up for under $5 makes me smile every time.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty curious about storage space too. Because it sort of implies there isn't any? The engine in the back, wheels hidden in the front, zero storage.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just space on the seat next to you, more than a bike but not by a lot.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And gas was so cheap you could make multiple trips, bring two bags each time (one on the seat, one in the footwell). Or just go shopping every day and every trip is a small one. /s

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... get a moped or a motorcycle

Not the same. Part of the appeal here is the dork factor.

Look up death rate per model.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Any vehicle over 17 feet long, 6 feet high and 6 feet wide should be categorized as a commercial vehicle and require a CDL.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

In ontario pickups are commercial. Don't need a "cdl" (a or d) because that's done by weight. Anything less than 4600kg is just a regular license (g).

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Any vehicle bigger than mine is bad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

I'd disagree on a CDL, but a class C license would be reasonable.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In some states class C is regular passenger car. That threw me off too, cause I'm from NV originally and class C means 'yeah I guess you can probably drive anything not for hire'. Hell, until recently the NV class C covered those giant ass motorhomes the size of a tour bus. They finally pushed those into a non-commercial A/B(depending on weight), so at least there's that. But there is no D there and now that I've encountered D elsewhere it really should be a standard thing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sauce if you'd like it: https://dmv.nv.gov/nvdl.htm scroll down a bit to license classes.

Hey look! A huge truck that will never go outside of a city hurray!!!

2 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

You're very optimistic that there aren't also people in the country who will drive this. Not all country folk shovel shit, they just like to pretend that they know that farm life because their yard is full of scrap and trucks.

Pavement princess just buy an SUV

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can do that with a van.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hmm okay show me the SUV thst can handle my gooseneck with 18000lbs of shit. What these trucks are designed for vs used for is a diff issue

"Designed especially for women" - a topless roof (wind) with no rear-view or visor mirrors?!

Mmmm, women.... Topless... I'm sorry what were we talking about again?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But… does it have pockets?

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

No. Nor a trunk. So using it to go grocery shopping while hubby had the big car at work was a no go. Hubby should have taken this and left the big car at home for wife and kids.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a good little housewifey only has to go groceries shopping when its nice weather, didnt you know that?!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah I thought it was supposed to help with grocery runs... there appears to be no storage.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you really need rear view mirrors when you don't have a top though?

That's not fair, nothing had a seat belt back then.
