So I got accepted to grad school to get my PhD finally. I've been dealing with about four years of rejection, coupled with severe depression. It's not a good mix. But I finally got onto the right antidepressants and found what I want to study (epigenetics of depression. Go figure) and I finally can study what I'm passionate about in the fall

Please make a monthly or quarterly appointment with a counsellor to keep your mental health in check. PhDs usually warrant it.

First, congratulations. Second, while pursuing your passion, also make sure you think beyond graduation to obtaining a job and paying loans

Congrats! Just remember to take care of yourself cause grad school can suck sometimes

Remember, the biggest predictor of whether you will finish is not smarts, it's stubborness. Never give up, never surrender!

As someone about to defend their PhD:

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My wife is a neuroscience PhD candidate who was at one time researching that. It is a very interesting field

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Your wife and I should be friends

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe you two will run into each other at SNF

Whenever someone titles something as "Storytime", I read it in the voice of that vine guy, then read the rest of the text really fast

The only proper way

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck op. I'm a grad student and it's been rough, but medicine definitely helps it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Allll the drugs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

Just make sure that while doing it, you live a balanced life. I've seen many fall into depression during their PhD stints. Be mindful.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you!

Universities kind of sweep this under the rug. My friend was unceremoniously moved to the "past group members" page when he killed himself.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Getting a PhD in life sciences is a total bitch, but totally worth it, especially when you have a personal connection

Also: CONGRATULATIONS

As a guy who has been getting rejected from several schools for the last 1.5 years and had to work in jobs that i hate, i'm proud of you @op

That's a nice gene. Would be a shame if someone methylated it.

9 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 2

I spent 8 hours learning all about this today and was able to get a good laugh thanks to you. It was all worth it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is a quality genetics joke.

Will you be as interested when not depressed? What meds work for you? Just a curious fellow sufferer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Idk why someone would downvote this comment

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm currently not depressed and the curiosity/passion I feel is real and sustained. And I'm on venlafaxine

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I take the same with abilify and some vitamin called Deplin

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahh b vitamin? I really should consider taking that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's called a medical food on the label. But yes, the B vitamin is good and there's another vitamin I take at night called ubiquitol.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mom tried to get me to take that. I'm a little skeptical of a drug if "naturalists" are touting it. But I'm biased

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was from my shrink because my depression still kicks up with all the meds. I've been on Prozac iexapro depakote lithium...ad naseum 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Congrats on getting 4 to 10 years of slave labours and bs academia politics. I wish you good luck and never lose your focus!

In a nutshell what it's been like

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Also insane levels of debt, speaking as somebody who is 5 months away from earning their doctorate

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The programs I applied to give you a stipend and I'll be living with my bf/soon to be husband

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you going into the sciences? If so you may want to up your meds...it's gonna get bumpy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'm supposed to increase them in may. I'm honestly afraid they'll interfere with my cognitive function though..

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Btw love your name

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op , Where'd you get in?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

UT southwestern. And waiting on Vanderbilt

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm so proud of you!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I interviewed at Vandy. Didn't like it too much, wasn't a good fit for me.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure how the interview will go but I already work here and know people so I may be biased lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's good though! That also means they know you and you're probably a good fit! :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I almost didn't get an interview bc I accidentally only applied to the neuro program instead of IGP. I know someone on the IGP committe

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where do you think you'll end up?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Am I relevant @op ?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why are you skeptical? Lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure if depressed anymore or if Ive learnt to just cope with it. That's why im skeptical.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ohhhhh yeah my general practitioner ive met once told me I'm still depressed bc I have insomnia. It made me doubt my mental health lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guess Im less depressed now when I have a job to distract myself with and am exhaused at the end of the day.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah keeping busy is really really important. At my worst I worked 13 hour days to keep myself occupied
