First time poster. I lost my little brother a few days back to a severe case of schizophrenia. It was especially heart breaking because he was the nicest and most genuine guy a brother could ask for. I've always admired the Imgur community and the support that comes with it. His name was Louis and I'm thankful that he is not suffering anymore. Mental illness is a real bitch and deserves more attention. Edit:thank you everyone for the support. He left behind a lot of unfinished music on his computer. I intend to collaborate with his works. 2nd edit: since this is the internet and proof is I guess required here you go: http://www.mtdemocrat.com/news/search-for-missing-man-centered-on-swollen-river/

My deepest condolences

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He had a beautiful smile and looks like he was a beautiful soul. I'm so sorry for your loss.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry for your loss. I wish the would stop qualifying it as mental illness and just call it what it is, illness.

8 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 10

...or just treat all mental illnesses as a subset of "illness"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I agree that we do still need to differentiate between body and brain ailments - so how about just saying "mental health diagnosis"?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are medical differences so we shouldn't put them together.

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 4

I've never thought of this before. It's good.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Mental illnesses and physical illnesses do not always go hand in hand. We just need to rid the stigma behind "mental illness"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sorry for your loss. Lost my brother 17yr ago - it gets a little easier - just never goes away.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing you mean it gets easier, never gets easy. Lost mine recently and that's how i imagine it feels for everyone in my shoes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I lost mine 13 years ago. With time you get more comfortable talking about it but no it never goes away.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine passed 10 years ago. Out of all the shit life has thrown at me in 43 years, it's definitely the hardest thing I have dealt with so far

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope you don't get any tougher ones .. be we probably will .. all of us.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Handsome looking man and I bet he was pretty smart and funny too, as many who suffer with mental illness are. I hope his light shines on.

8 years ago | Likes 310 Dislikes 7

Always remember that each person with it is still an individual! And while they may have those traits, they may not think so themselves. :3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really too fair to say they're all smart and funny. Most of the people I work with, that have a mental illness, don't do to well

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mental illness is highly correlated with both high and low IQ so you'll see the other end of the spectrum as well.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not all ppl that suffer from mental illness are good looking . Source: diagnosed with paranoia and am ugly as fuck

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 9

You sure that's not the paranoia talking?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I concur. I'm depressed, anxious, ugly AND fat! I really take the biscuit... and the beer ... and the pizza ... and all the pies! ;o)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, you're good looking. It's the paranoia that thinks you're ugly

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Aww thanks broo

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Diagnosed with depression and have been told that I hit every ugly branch on my fall out of the ugly tree.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

"At least I got hit on by the branches, which is more than I can say for you, Linda."

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, am Schizophrenic (Diagnosed Disorganized type, before they removed subtype classification in 2013 with the release of DSM-5)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And also ugly as fuck.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Implication was that lots of people with mental illnesses like this are often smart and funny. The handsome part shoulda had a semicolon.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Correct

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it's not too insensitive of me, OP, how does someone pass from schizophrenia? I think there is a misunderstanding of the disease and 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 6

Huge, huuuuuuuuuuuge misunderstandings about the disease. What causes it, the symptoms, living with it, integration into society, etc.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People who have schizophrenia often suffer with command hallucinations which tell them to harm someone or themselves.

8 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Suicide unfortunately

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I'd like to learn more. Also, my deepest condolences, if you ever need someone to talk to, send me a message.

8 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 2

It's often suicide

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This could be / mean severe depression driven by that.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

No worries. He left my parents' house to go be out in nature and swim in a river he used to love. We filed a missing persons report,

8 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 0

Im glad he had you while he was on earth. I can sense how much you really saw and loved him.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

It's a very difficult illness to describe, and as someone who suffers from it, at times the hallucinations can become pretty bad.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Both auditory and visual. Voices that scream, claw at your mind, with visions that create a distorted, nightmarish reality. It's easy to see

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Why so many either crack, harming others or committing suicide. It's not something I'd ever wish on another human, not even the worst of us.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But the police didn't respond fast enough because of his condition. He was swept away and he drowned. He was off his medications for 2 month

8 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 1

It's very dangerous to leave medication :T it breaks my heart

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I am so sorry. I'm not sure why the police don't respond faster in these situations! I wish you and your family love and peace.

8 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

My parents and I are livid about the response time. I may have a follow up post exposing their incompetence.

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 1

Please do post if you follow up. It would be interesting to hear "their side of the story." Where do live? How old was your brother?

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Schizophrenia is a wicked disease, it controls the mind and presents as heart break .It's hard on the person and the families. He is at rest

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

One of the worst parts is that he was convinced he wasn't sick

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's a common thing about mental illnesses. I was convinced for YEARS that my depression was just laziness.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They always are, my uncle was diagnosed in 70s, the medical prescription was heavy anti psychotics and surgery to insert metal plates 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

In his wrists (so he couldn't hurt himself) fast forward to July 2004. He had been responding the same to his meds and we knew how to 2/?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Watch for signs. We stayed vigilant and then in that july we noticed a shift in him,It was like nothing we had seen, he became religious 3/?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And paranoid.we worked with the doctors to help make him safe. In that November he slid down words and started to accuse god of taking 4/?
