No appreciation

Mar 31, 2021 11:00 AM

Made this 1950s apron from linen (the floral fabric), cotton poplin (the teal fabric) and vintage japanese cotton lace.

I'd made one previously, unlined (so, missing the teal cotton on the back) for my niece and someone I'd spoken to online a few times asked if I would make her one as she loved it. I am totally down to make people I know stuff for free because I like making things, I don't want all the things taking up my storage space and I really like when people appreciate my creations.

I paid for the fabric (linen ain't cheap), sewed it up, took about a day with cutting times included, then paid for the ridiculous postage from Aus to USA.

How did she respond? "It's cute but it's a bit small".

It's a decorative apron, with a tie on the back, it's not meant to completely cover you like a workshop apron or a dress.

Secondly, she gave me her measurements so if it's "a bit small" maybe she should have given me the correct measurements?

I'm so disheartened. I love making things for people and then people like this come along and just kill the enjoyment for me.

Please feel free to share your stories of people being unappreciative of your work/art so I can feel a bit less alone with this poopiness.

I was so pround of how this one turned out too.

It doesn't like to sit flat so looks crooked in these pics.

Even has a little heart shaped pocket.

On me. I'm 5 foot 7.

Looks good, dude. Fuck that person.

As someone small, I'd happily have it! As long as you wouldn't be offended if it's used for 90% baking, 10% sexy times...

This is a fucking sexy ass, "Pretending to be a 50s housewife for the bf/gf/hubbie/wife" apron. Fuck. Its gorgeous.

Send her a bill for your time and material costs.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

well this is awesome, I love it :D

That is a pleasant looking creation. You did good. And of course, we cannot please everyone, which is not our fault. Keep up the fine work.

If you make things for people for free your only payment will be disappointment.

That apron is absofuckinglutely stunning. Don't you dare let anyone tell you otherwise. I am sorry some people are so unappreciative. ?

I was confused as fuck about what it was on the hanger. Lol

I can appreciate and respect the craftsmanship, it's very pretty. That said, it could also be SUPER sexy.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Id take one, but I'm a fat, hairy, man, so it's probably for the best that I don't

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think you should wear whatever you want. Know what, you'd be adorable in this.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bake, and most of what I make for other people, who don't always pay me, goes 100% unthanked. It is not a nice feeling.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same. Made a cake for a "friend" for free, took me one day do decorate it. Added cookies that she wanted. Not even a thank.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's cute as heck! You did a great job

I clicked off this post just as I read your comment and came back to give you an upvote. Well done.

Tiny Octopus would wear that proudly with nothing else on to make pancakes and bacon for his special someone.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

This is gorgeous!!! I'd happily buy something from you and pay for it! I've been wanting an apron but I want something pretty!

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Oh man, we have a phrase in my group of friends (creatives) "They're using me like a fuckin pencil." for when clients get way too critical.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I really like the picture of it laid out flat btw, super satisfying pattern/design.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fabric- especially linen- is not cheap. I’d be PISSED if I paid for postage and they had the nerve to do that.

5 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I want to make a very breathable summer corset and I'm cringing thinking about the material cost already...

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ps this is really nice and cute. Extremely tasteful.

I used to design clothes for ppl.I stopped when ppl couldn't understand the amount of work/ time put into it does not mean wish.com prices

Had a guy come in to my barbershop. Says he wants to change his style up from brushing it forward to now a side part. Shows me a picture..

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

.. so I cut his hair. He then proceeds to stand up, look in the mirror, and brush his hair forward and complain it doesn't sit right...

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Myself, and the two senior barbers in the shop try explaining why, how his hair is cut just like the picture he showed me, and asking him...

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

... if he plans on still combing it forward instead of like the picture (it is an easy fix). Finally after 20 minutes of this, he leaves.

Don't let it get to you, that apron is gorgeous! Advice for future though, don't do stuff for free, unless it's for charitable cause.

5 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Wait....she did it for freeeee?!? ? Oh that precious little thing.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As someone who cooks would adjust the upper part to be a little wider. With beauty I need functionality. As far as style & fabric ????.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's a decorative apron in white linen, I wouldn't cook with it lol

My GF sells on Etsy. Someone gave her a 1 star review because it didn't come in cute gift packaging. None was requested, nor 1)

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

was there any mention of packaging at all anywhere on the site. She loved the item, said it arrived super quick, and the price was good...2)

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

but still gave a 1-star rating because she expected something that was never shown or mentioned. end)

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

OK, so not "end".... The annoying part is that we only had 3 reviews at the time (we're up to 15 now), so that hurt the rating big-time!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would be devastated if that happened. That's awful.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I paint windows for a living. I spent three months painting at Amazon wear houses and didn't get paid. I'm owed 3k.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I sued. I won. And I still haven't been paid. I'm kinda over window painting murals now. Everyone wants a ton of work for penny's.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

She complemented the appearance and gave an opinion about the fit. I wouldn't take it as an insult

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

But she already knew what she was getting AND it was a gift that a lot of effort went in to! That's a very unkind way to respond, imo

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was a gift, she didn't say thank you, just complained. Apparently by small she actually meant short. It's a short apron.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly. It’s not an insult to the work done.

I wouldn’t as for a refund but maybe you could make one hotter and put a disclaimer that it’s not taste tested so they get what they get

That wouldn’t be a bad idea. Removes your liability. Sorry you have to deal with dumb people

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm an artist too. Theres nothing like feeling all the motivation sucked from your body over people like this

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Is your user name your profession? ?

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Shit, that's funny!!!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Customer: "I want a different font on this poster." Artist: "Woe is me!" You see how ridiculous that is, right?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

except it's: "I love your stuff, make me one" without any details. and after it's done "that's not what I wanted, make it different"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm actually amazed how tone deaf this comment is

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The person in the post literally didnt pay for it? It was a gift so the critique is kinda fucked up

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The point was that no artist worth the title would go to pieces over negative feedback. Especially of this gentle kind.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No one said they broke down, I'm saying its a specific kind of hurt when you get critiqued over a gift.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they're both equally petty.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This could become my fetish...

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 6

Ew

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

...frilly aprons that aren't appreciated by the recipient? That's oddly specific.

5 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

Disappointment...well...*zip*

If it’s unwanted I’d buy it. My wife loves teasing me in things like this.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tell me more about how it wasn't her size...

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It just didn't quite fit. It was a little snug around the waist.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And guess what else? The skirt portion was just a little too far past the knee for her liking.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone with 6 aprons, thst is GORGEOUS. Do you have an etsy???

5 years ago | Likes 482 Dislikes 2

Ha! I am also sometime with six aprons, and happy to aquire another. This one is totally something I'd add to my collection. ?

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I have a couple aprons and I always get sad when I only remember them after I'm done with chores

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Omg right? Sometimes though, I'll wear one with pockets around the house to hold ky phone etc while listening to music. A lot of girls

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Clothes have small or jo pockets and the aprons come on and off so easily it's so nice!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
