Not a sphincter here...it was a sex doll dungeon... Back then, and that's why circumcision was invented

turns out the nose looked like a nose. What a revelation. But in all seriousness, this find is awesome

I'll wager it's not too old. Ptolemaic Kingdom probably.

There are lots of sphinxes already out there. Just the big one is the famous, well-known one.

A fucking. NOSE.

What’s “boop the snoot” in Hieroglyphics?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not like two different statues of the same thing couldn't look completely different. https://imgur.com/j113Rm4

What's under the left paw?

You've disturbed the young in the nest. Bad move OP, you know how big the mom is.

she'll give me that stoney look and be out of there

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Originaly it was believed to be a lion, 100 000 years ago. Heard that on jre podcast

And here all this time I had no idea what a nose might look like on a face.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I imagine nose-like

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looked like a nose.

Thats so cool. Thanks for sharing this.

Theories point to the Great Sphinx’s face being a replacement for an earlier, eroded face. Comparison to this Sphinx supports that theory.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This sphinx is about half as old as the Great Sphinx, and looks to have been protected some from erosion. Not sure comparison means much.

Who would have thought it would have looked like a regular nose?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, so many pyramidiots in imgur.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

shocking, it looked like a nose

looks like an African nose, napoleon couldn't handle it not looking like his i guess.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Nose was gone before Napoleon was born, though.

i must have learned a urban myth

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's a common myth, yeah. There are sketches from 1755 showing it missing. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Norden,_1755_(2).png

That was in the movie too, but they hid it under the Sphinx!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the history I learned!

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And it was such a pretty nose

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Banana for scale missing — how big is this thing?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Need a banana next to that thing

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I reject your reality and substitute my own that says it is very large and found in a cavern.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the scale imperial or metric?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Banana for scale?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well it is about 28cm in width

Jawline doesn't look like the Great Sphinx's and this is apparently about 2000 years newer. I don't know that we can assume much similarity.

2000 years is long time in celestial cycle it's a wonder they were still praising Leo at all

7 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 3

You would assume made by the same people's blood line.

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 10

Made by the same people, but not necessarily modeled on them. Later one could be modeled in part on their (by that point) Macedonian rulers.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

do you have a theory on what it looked like?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

a lil point and then two nose holes

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I had to guess, I'd assume similar to other Old Kingdom statues. Maybe more stylized or adjusted to fit the rock used. >

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Something like Khafra's nose, maybe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khafra

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've seen a theory that it was based on Pharoah Khufu as a tribute by either of his sons Djedefre or Khafre. So it may look similar to 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The statues found of Khufu, though that is not confirmed. It is an intriguing idea though and I am personally a fan of the theory. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They also now think because of the relative small head size the Sphinx may have originally had lion's head but was later recarved as it is.

7 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 0

It did face leo in the night sky way back in the day.

7 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

It had a Leonardo Dicaprio face? I call ballocks on that one chief

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Graham Hancock has a theory that puts the construction of the Sphinx 10,500 BC. And he has some interesting evidence for this, as well.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...but the position of the stars moves.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

1 degree every 72 years.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I meant more throughout the night, but feel like now I’m being stupid...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://www.robertschoch.com/sphinx.html suggestion that the Sphinx is more like 7000 years old 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This would put the Egyptians off by nearly 100 degrees. 2/2
