First go at shooting the Milky Way

Two exposures. One for the sky and one for the light trails - Gold Coast, Australia

EDIT: A few people asked what gear settings I used to get this so...

Nikon D7200
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens
Manfrotto 190 tripod (but I've used a bag of rice on a chair to do light trails before so, you know, whatever works for you)

ISO4000 - Use what ever your camera can go up to with out creating too much noise. most newer/newish cameras can get nice shots up around 3200 and even 6400

f2.8

Shutter speed 20 sec - from what I've read above 30 seconds you start to get star trails

Any other questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.

I'm not claiming to know anything about this, but just from the picture I think you need to aim the lasers a little higher.

I "shoot the Milky Way" fairly often

This is my phone wallpaper now, I have taken it for my own; you shall relinquish all rights to this photo. Now be gone.

Do people realise that we are in the milky way and that every photo ever taken is computer generated to what we think it may look like

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't just about every photo we take of the Milky Way galaxy?

I don't see a candy bar anywhere.

I don't understand the technical aspect of this post, but you have my upvote for sure.

Honestly this is better than all those dumps of wallpapers combined.

Absolutely beautiful. The color contrast seems so pleasing to the eyes.

Eyegasm

If I could get this in like a 4k resolution and landscape, and a bit of smoothing to remove grain when viewed full size, it'd be perfect.

Don't touch those wires. They look hot.

Looks like you got a clear shot of The Flash too...

Do you melt it down in the wrapper? Have tried shooting Snickers?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seeing it in person is just as breath taking. Up in Colorado I have a cabin about 25k up from sea level. The ground turns a light blue at1/2

night from all the stars. The galactic disk is visible, and you can see every single satellite in orbit. I want to move there forever.

How long of exposure did you use?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you mean two exposures, did you take two photos and layer them?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep, layered in photoshop using 'Lighten' overlay function which just combines the brightest parts of both layers

Nice OP! I took this up the road on the Sunny Coast http://imgur.com/IZW6upE. These shots are so much fun!

You got a lot more colour in yours than I could get.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Think I didn't get far enough from the GC light pollution or didn't wait till late enough in the night.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea I was only able to get that detail by shooting straight up. If I'd tried to include nice landscape like yours it would have blown out

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving...
