9 years free from an opiate addiction!

It’s been 9 years and I am so grateful. I was addicted for almost 6 years. I got very sick at 14 and had debilitating pain. The doctors prescribed me heavy duty opiate pain killers. They helped, but I got addicted. It spiraled out of control. At rock bottom I prayed a desperate prayer, expecting nothing to happen. But my life changed drastically after and I have been clean for 9 years now. I’m not here to preach, everyone has their own beliefs.
(But if you do want to know more about my story, feel free to reach out. I’m an open book!)

What I do want to do, though, is encourage people to not give up hope. It may be cliche, bur I want people to know that no matter how deep into addiction (whether it’s drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc) you or someone you may know may be, there is always the possibility for a change and for getting better.

If you are addicted, ask for help. It’s going to be damn hard. But you truly can do it. You are worth it.

And for others, please remember that even in the depths of addiction, people still have worth and value, so treat them with compassion and kindness. Usually people with an addiction are suffering from physical pain, mental illness or trauma and are just trying to self medicate and/or cope to make it through. A little bit of compassion goes a long way and might make the difference that person needs.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or in a dark time, please feel free to message me. I can support you, give you resources, or just listen.

For those of you in recovery, I’d love to hear your stories and hear how long you’ve been clean/sober. Keep on fighting my friends!

Clean and sober from cocaine addiction and alcohol abuse for almost 3 years. The birth of my son was my smack in the nuts to clean up.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Good for you! I just got 18 months after 25 years of being the “party guy”. Asking for help went against everything I was taught but needed

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

That’s fantastic! Congratulations! Asking for help is the hardest part I think. Keep pushing forward, my friend. It’s so worth it!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've asked for help a few times. Gets laughed off. High functioning alcoholic.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m so sorry. Sometimes asking for help means going to treatment and asking the pros for help.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

54 years clean here

Awesome! Very inspiring to those that are only just beginning

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, I wish my transformation after addiction was that amazing. So happy for you! I'm just over my 5th year.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Your transformation is that amazing. You are not using and you are not dead. Don't discount your own accomplishments as they are your own.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is. How you wear it might no be, but your recovery is amazing. All the best as you continue to work on it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Congratulations, I know that must have been a feat of will power. You look really happy now dude!

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Thank you!! I can’t take all the credit (like I said, radical answer to prayer!) but it’s still a fight each day!

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And I am so much happier!! I’m in more pain now but happier, which I’ll take over pain free but miserable any day!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well I'm sorry for the pain, I hope you have friends or family you can lean on for support when needed. Take pride in your accomplishment :)

We need to end the pushing of opiates. Most of the time it's completely un-necessary. I've been prescribed opiates 3 times, never took them.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They’ve cracked down a LOT. Unfortunately, this also hurts people with chronic pain who really do need them. It’s a catch 22.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes, I need them from time to time and my Dr. treats me like a junkie.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

that's great, I feel like I'm about to lose a friend to addiction and it just feels like I'm being used. I just paid off her dealer 2)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, addiction can make even the nicest people into selfish manipulators. Tough love and boundaries is often needed. Good luck!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you are enabling her. you probably didn't even pay off anyone. Just paid up instead.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Um. I'm sorry but you are. Friends that are addicts don't want to be but are users. (depending how far down they are)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Addiction is the only disease you get yelled at for having." - believe it was Norm MacDonald that said that. I'm over 10 years sober.

4 years ago | Likes 179 Dislikes 3

Don't forget obesity

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ADHD gets you yelled at and plenty. Congrats of the 10 years!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My untreated ADHD was a factor in my addiction. Dealt with that too...made living life on life's terms so much easier.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's wildly underestimated how many addicts are self medicating. The right treatment can change lives.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree - certainly did for me.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're not yelled at for having, but for not fixing it. Many people yelled at my mom for using B.S oils to try and cure her cancer.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 9

Did she recover? Mum just been diagnosed with uncurable but treatable cancer

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes but the damage was done. We managed to convince her by using emotional blackmail. We claimed to never see her again unless she sees a doc

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Best of luck to you and your mum. Hope she gets better soon.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

thank you kind stranger ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cannabinoids and medicinal mushrooms are some non BS complimentary therapies I’d recommend alongside regular treatment. It’s helping my mum

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

For sure gonna try some alternative psych therapies

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for spending time to talk about it ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for sharing. Who did you ask and how? I can't even bring myself to telling my boyfriend, although he surely already knows.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

talk to a suboxone doctor. Therapy is a big part of it. Your BF knows I am sure.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/ and I explained how bad the addiction had gotten. I don’t think there’s an easy way to do it. But it’s sure a weight off when you do.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Yeah, I guess it's the best way to take off a load of the stress if it works out.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great question! It was so hard but I went to my mom and just said, “I… think I need to go to treatment.” That opened the door to a convo

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

you got a doggo? best choice ever

4 years ago | Likes 151 Dislikes 4

Idk I feel like maybe you should sort yourself out before bringing another life into the mix

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She’s not my dog, but I do have two of my own! That’s my best friend’s dog. We spend our time playing with her instead of doing drugs now!

4 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

So much more rewarding! Drugs don't give a fuck what your do with them, but to bring joy to a doggo with just your attention is the bestest!

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

best choice ever!

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Drugs to Dogs.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned you can't help those that don't want help.. Had a friend, Last I spoke with her, she asked if I helped her out with a few $$ 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She would repay me in many different ways. Needless to say, I don't speak with her anymore.. my hear breaks for her kid... :-(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s true. People won’t accept help until they’re ready. But, you can continue to offer her help getting to rehab and you can pray for her!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She knows I’m there if she needs it & do wish her best. Makes me happy knowing someone survived the dark clasp drugs can have! I’m Happy4u

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope you celebrate the date you quit every year. If you don't know the exact date, make one up and stick with it. Do something fun/nice

I try my best to not look back at that part of my life at all, I want to keep moving forward and forget that whole dark chapter of my 1/

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My life. Why I never understood NA

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's a cool idea. Sober birthday party!

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Something fun like buprenorphine?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 23

Yeah not cool man not cool! I didn't want to make that joke at all as I was reading the comment! Not one thought popped in my head! Ugh!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

Shut up Pam..

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Not fucking cool, homie

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I do- today! :) I spend it with my son, who gives me reason to get out of bed each day and stay clean!

4 years ago | Likes 327 Dislikes 1

Everyday is a celebration! Every night I get thanks that I’m sober.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Excellent. My wife and I celebrate March 5 every year with a homemade Italian dinner and a fine bottle of wine. We've done it a lot.

4 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

I’m guessing alcohol was NOT the drug of choice then lol!

4 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 0

No. It was actually a 2+ pack a day cigarette addiction.

4 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

I never thought of having an annual celebration for quitting nicotine, but maybe I should! 7 years free of cigarettes as of end of March.

4 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

The most apt definition I’ve heard for addiction, is that it’s ritualized compulsive comfort seeking. We definitely need more compassion :)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

survivor party :)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Prescribed opiates at 14. America really did win the war on drugs.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

It's really not good, but I wonder what the options are if simple analgesia (nsaids, paracetamol) don't work - there isn't much choice then!

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There is no relief because they gave opioids to all the ppl who didn't need them so ppl w real pain now can't get them. I can't get them.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone in medicine, there are a lot of options. Some people get relief from alternative therapy but insurance doesn’t usually cover (1)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That so it’s often off the table. Localized nerve blocks can help depending on the type of pain. Mixed opioid agonists can often treat (2)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Pain without as much side effects and often with lower addictive properties. There’s also low dose opioids although those aren’t usually (3)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ideal because chronic usage usually leads to tolerance. I’m not a pain specialists so those are the basics I learned in school. I’m sure (4)
