actually that's fat32. fat16's limit was 2 gbytes.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The truth is out there ... way down in the comments.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

precisely!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tbf I've never had to save a >4gb file. Unless you've got huge zip archives or a huge video file fat would be fine right?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

even if you don't care about file size limits, the dos filesystem is lacking many other features of modern FSs.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One of the other major FAT problems was that the bigger the hard drive was, the larger the minimum allocation size. So 1k file takes 32kb.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I could see being annoyed by that

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, especially since back then programs were kinda dumb and you could have some program with 20,000 512 byte files taking many KB each.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can someone explain this to me?

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

FAT is the old file storage system used by conputers. It couldn't handles files over 4 gigabytes.

8 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 1

Thank you kind Sir.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Still widely used on USB memory sticks I think.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're the hero we dont deserve.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is FAT32, FAT was max size of 4GB with files no larger than 2GB

As a college CS student, I have never heard of this in my life. Now I'm going to find a way to use this to confuse my professors.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ask em why Linux insists on calling ATA drives SCSI.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it works, then change schools.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure any CS professor will know what the File Allocation Table is

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I mean a college CS student doesn't really need to learn all the bits of history but it really helps if your actually passionate to learn

about everything computer from the 1800s onwards

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are still tons of Win9x and WinXP machines used in business. It's amazing there isn't a class just for covering their limitations.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to mention that FAT32 formatted flash memory is still commonly used in embedded & mobile devices.
