Very very happy with how it all turned out

Starting off with a 40mm Ammo Can off of amazon for about $30

Removed the back hinge with a bit of percussive engineering to make room for the GPU/Motherboard outputs

Cutting the side open to allow for part installation

Here she is, rivets (and paint) removed

Planning the location of the fans and window on the side panel

I eventually decided to make a slightly larger outline out of another piece of steel and have the outline be attached to the case itself with removable screws for maintenance and future upgrades

Cut the steel to shape with a dremel and a LOT of cutting bits

Laying out all the parts of the door/panel

And a mock-up of what I want it to look like

Bolts were put through both parts and secured with nuts on the back

...here I discovered I'm going to need more than JB Weld to hold the makeshift legs of the case on.

Lookin' good! Door panel temporarily added

Now to fit the Power Supply

A hole was cut for the fan, and the case taped off for spray painting

Don't want paint on the garage carpet

Eh, looks a bit off, but its whatever paint we had laying around

Power supply in place!

Not about to go back to the store when I bought bolts too long for the motherboard

Much better

its here!

Cutting holes for the "standoffs"

Like a glove

Finally cut the holes in the back for the outputs, this took longest to try and get all the measurements right and to not screw it all up

"Standoffs" (re-purposed brass rivets) working great!

Less than 1/2 in of space on top to spare

GPU fitting nicely also, a mere 1/8th of an inch of extra room between the fan housing and case

Probably should have painted first....

Starting to look like a PC case eh? maybe

Adding a bit of a border around the window for pretty

Corsair H50 Closed system CPU watercooler

It looks a bit weird from this angle

But not too bad from the outside

Shiny

Installing the CPU (i5-6600k)

Getting that CPU contact on was a huge pain, but its on there nice and snug

Adding my little 40mm fans for extra GPU air flow

Ta-da! 1st power-up success

Adding that window now, ProTip: Do NOT cut acrylic with a Dremel, the smell is ungodly and actually made me nauseous

Held in place with adhesive strips from old wall hangers, I spared no expense of course

damn that's messy, but she does work

Installation going great so far!

Windows 10 sounding like its trying to cover itself for something it did

My favorite feature, a little aftermarket white LED ring power button on the front.

"After"

"Before"

More glamour shots

Runs super cool-n-quiet as well, maxing 50c cpu and 55c gpu on near-max load.

gj @op :D how loud is it? as far as i know, generally, the smaller the fan the louder it is-and you used 3 40s;my 3 80s are almost too loud

Dude, this thing is awesome.

@op an "aftermarket" led for the front? ... yeah like the rest of the case came like that from a shop?

Nice one @OP...

Needs a decal that says "This Machine Plays Videogames"

I'm assuming storage was placed above the psu?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always see these and want to do similar, then i realize these people have garage full of tools.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you could do it with minimal tools if you really want to. It'll take longer, but you could do it, and it would be even more impressive

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is bad ass. Very Nice OP.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn ammo boxes are bigger than I thought, great looking mod.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Incredible idea, nicely done OP

How do people find the energy to do this stuff? I still haven't gotten out of bed and I woke up like 3 hours ago

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty bitchin! Gives me some ideas for a 20mm can I've got laying around

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is really bad-ass. GREAT JOB!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty certain that whole thing is aftermarket, not just the LED ring :-)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Next time might want to invest in metal nibblers for cutting.

If this was mine I'd get or make my own thodio speakers. http://store.thodio.com/collections/frontpage/products/thodio-a-box-heavy-edition

Also install a double or triple monitor setup in a sniper rifle hard case.

How is the temperature?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Neat

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is cool! There's stuff called Polywatch if you need to buff up that acrylic. Why go for wing nuts and not stick with hex screws?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks great and all, but Ive seen enough American news stories to know what happens when kids start bringing stuff like this to school

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

I'm pretty sure if you let the police department for the school to examine it, they will allow it.

They get to visit the Whitehouse?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Depends on what college. My alma matter allows concealed carry by students who are licensed, and quite frankly stuff like this is the norm.

40MM grenade can. No way 32 40MM rounds fit in that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can if they are dummy rounds. It's nice everything fit. I would have chickened out and used a can of 50 cal. for more space.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why would anybody downvote this ???

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Serious guestion: Where the everliving fuck can I get a 40mm ammo box? I cant find 7.62 and 12.7 ones easy but they are small. :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try amazon, 30 bucks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bet the shipping this side of the Atlantic will be hell though. We'll I'll see what I can find.

Spec from OP on reddit i5-6600k Gigabyte micro ATX B150 8gb (4x2) DDR4 R9 270x (to be upgraded) OCZ 240gb ssd

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is correct

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

should use one of these for the power imo:

9 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 0

But... when you flip the cover down, it resets the switch. That would turn it off. unless you wire it backwards.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Momentary switch, flip, click (boots), close cover... some time later.... flip, click (shuts down) or hold (REALLY shuts down)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

nah man, least actual military switches the cover is to prevent it from accidentally being switched. flip, turn on/off, close

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

See that is really cool except the corsair vengeance c70 exists lol http://www.corsair.com/Media/catalog/product/c/7/c70_g_handlesdown.png

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

That's the case I use =P

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea, but custom is cool, and the above is quite a bit smaller

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So what are the final spec on the unit? Ram,board,GPU,weight...

Upgrade to a nvidia card....

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 46

That is a solid build for such a small package, Thanks for sharing!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any reason to put a 6600k on a non overclock motherboard?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My thoughts as well. Another thing is @op will you be upgrading the power supply soon with the GPU as those are sub par at best.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After all that work it's going to suck when they make you get rid of it because some other student is "triggered" by an ammo box.

9 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 8

then dont invite them into your dorm room

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah i dont think hes taking that to class, carrying a monitor around seems superfluous

That or he will become a legend.

Legendary or infamous . . . one or the other.

I was told by a prof at my uni that my umbrella with a katana handle would get me in trouble. They can be paranoid about this stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A katana handle seems more... immediately worrying than an ammo crate, honestly. Comparing a fake knife to a box. They're vastly different.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, no. Nice narrative insertion though

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

Public place, one stupid incident. Whatever, doesn't matter

Let's play this game. You keep saying it doesn't exist, and I'll keep posting examples. Let's see how many it takes.
