Before you assume!
I majored in a field that is dominated by men. Any guesses? During my senior year of college I undertook a thesis that had to do with my field and how it has been influenced by women slowly entering the profession. My thesis committee decided that it would be beneficial for me to enroll in a few GWS classes so I could learn the discourse of the field in order to write my thesis. I had a pretty flexible schedule, I was curious what GWS classes were actually like, so I went for it! The following consists of my experiences.
The professor
My professor was actually a dude, and he was cool af. He would start each semester explaining how he first become interested in feminist theory and why he ended up as a professor. He explained that when he was younger, he was always made fun of for being small in stature and how that really affected his self worth. Anyway, he was hilarious and would frequently bring up how hard online dating was for him. Apparently, American women are not into asian guys? He also wore the coolest sweaters. I like sweaters.
What was the class like?
About what you would expect from a college course. Outside of class, you were supposed to read tons of assigned articles, read from the multiple (overpriced) text books, keep up with the news, complete essays, and take tests. The class itself was a lecture with open discussion.
Both classes I took focused a lot on how American companies are taking advantage of countries in which women are second class citizens. These businesses move their factories to foreign countries in order to hire women and children for cheap labor. We also studied issues that men face, the pressures of being a man due to societal expectations (being successful, being fit, being tall, standing up for yourself and those around you, having lots of sex, being handsome, having a deep voice, being confident, being good at sports, enjoying sports, etc) and how that can suck for guys who don't fit that criteria and why this often times leads to depression. There was actually very little man-hating, if not any. The professor encouraged discussions to mainly be a critical analysis of the various establishments that hold out-dated views that are harmful to BOTH men and women. That's right, the classes I took spent a large portion of their time explaining how men can be victims too. For example, only recently did legislation change to recognize that men can also be rape victims. The notion that feminists don't believe in male rape victims is false. Sorry, hate to break it to you. The classes also focused on people of color, native American groups, LGBTQ experiences. Very little of it had to do with just women. In fact a lot of it had to do with criticizing women (particularly white women) and how we contribute to harming men and other people. There has always been discussion about changing it from Gender Women's Studies, to something more encompassing.
Were there fights?
Yes, there were fights. Lots of heated moments. Did you know that feminists often disagree with each other, and that they don't all think the same?
I almost got jumped once, for an opinion that wasn't even mine.
We were having debates and students were assigned to either defend or attack certain issues. I told the professor that I wanted the most difficult assignment. He assigned me to come up with an argument as to why Kim Davis was right to do what she did. I didn't support Kim Davis, so this was a difficult task to do, but I gave it my best.
I swear, a few of the students seemed to forget that some of us were "assigned" our opinions. I felt like I was gonna get jumped.
I still hold a grudge against this girl
Saw a girl with a totoro backpack in my class. I tried to compliment her because I'm a huge Miyazaki fan. She was a total jerk about it. You would think that by her reaction I had insulted her family! She literally scoffed at me!!! Maybe she was just having a bad day. I don't know. I still hold a grudge against that girl though! All I did was compliment her backpack. Whatever, her totoro backpack wasn't even that cool.
The coolest person I met was a gender queer individual, she was chill af. Seriously, every conversation I had with her made me want to high five her. She was always level headed in discussions and pretty damn witty at times.
First class I took only had one guy in it. He said his mom forced him to sign up for the class so he might "learn something." He brought a lot of unique insight to discussions and was really enjoyable. Although, I still wonder if he had done something to upset his mom?
Mr. Lumberjack Man
The second class I took had a lumberjack in it (tall, bearded, muscular, military, nontraditional student). He sat towards the front and was very enthusiastic during discussions. He came off as genuine and actually interested to learn. However, he constantly interrupted people and would talk over people in the class. Other than that, he was pretty cool. Although, he did say a few questionable things about rape...
There were Bros
Pretty sure some of these guys signed up for the class because the title included the word "Sex" in it. I don't think the class was what they expected, but there were a lot of girls present (awwwww yea)! For the most part, these guys tried to keep a low profile. They giggled a lot, and projected a sense that they were often times uncomfortable. Which was unfortunate, because most people in that class really wanted to hear their perspective on issues.
One time the prof played a music video featuring some sexy Korean girls, just to announce at the end that the sexy girls were actually boys. The bros reaction to this revelation was the most we ever got from them all semester.
There was an older mom!
Sweet lady, I never understood what point she was trying to make when she spoke up, but I do appreciate her participation. She also shared a ton of personal information. It seemed like her last marriage was terrifying. Lots of abuse. Good for you to come back to school though! I hope she is doing well.
What did I learn about GWS courses?
Ok, yes, there are some people who enroll in GWS courses who are the worst. They are people who won't let you talk, and misconstrue everything you say. I am a feminist, but at times I couldn't even handle some of the students in those classes. But for the most part, the students I met were pretty cool and chill. I only knew two GWS majors throughout undergrad, and they both went on to do cool things after graduation. If you're a good student, you will find opportunity regardless of what you study.
I completed my thesis and got an A!
It was a year long ordeal and caused me a lot of stress! But I finished it and it only took me 98 pages to get my point across!!! Thanks for reading IMGUR!
TL;DR took two GWS classes, a few people fulfilled stereotypes, but for the most part the class was informative and the people were chill af.
Curadh
'Gratz on the thesis!

Calm, clear, sensible post based on experience and a grounded perspective? +1

Re: woman and children and cheap labor. Some of the kids sewing soccer balls would be sold as sex slaves if they weren't working.
khtad
If I had the choice, and that is the choice, I would rather the kids sew athletic apparel than face sexual enslavement.
Michelicorne
Wow, GWS Students are Human too. What a world full of wonder we live in. They even disagree. Like every other group ! Oh Boy, Oh Boy. WP@OP!
shannaconda
I know! So surprising!
Michelicorne
Seriously your post is useful and cool ^^. This appart, Shannaconda? I don't even wanna know why.
GolFoehammer
That was a really interesting take, which has changed my view on these classes!
etcccc
interesting post, and you have had some classy ass responses for some comments that could have easily been taken the wrong way. +1
shannaconda
Trying my best to keep things civil!
RedVelvetOwl
THIS SO MUCH. OP, I gotta give you my thanks for presenting this well-grounded experience. Feminist represent! <3
SunsetSilhouettes
It's awesome that you had good experiences. When I took a similar class it was essentially the worst of Tumblr reiterated into lecture.
shannaconda
Yea, seems like people have had mixed experiences with these types of classes
lemonaider
This is great to see! There are a lot of negative things said here on imgur about feminists but I really think it comes from extreme ...
lemonaider
Female supremacists rather than "feminists".. which is really a misnomer
Seanspeed
Yet these are the prime examples used by anti-feminists because they like to use that stereotype to make it easier to defend their beliefs
Seanspeed
So all those posts are actively contributing to further ignorance and hate against a positive and progressive movement.
EneZio
Atleast the bros learned something about themselves
PsychopompGecko
Yes. When it comes to the internet, penises could be lurking anywhere...

No, cuz everyone's on this site during class.
shannaconda
Oh yea, I definitely had one or two in my arch classes.
coinich
My favorite time in class was when one of my classmates told the guy who wouldn't stop interrupting him to shut the fuck up. In those words
ASE7ENK
I have quite the opposite problem, I feel like I'm the only one who ever speaks up in my classes. Math and science especially.
berserkerteacup
I'm really glad that you had a class that taught intersectionality, which is a really big and important part that often gets overlooked!
shannaconda
Me too! It is an interesting concept that I think most fields of study can benefit from!
berserkerteacup
Agreed. Especially things like anthropology.
redzombie
I like how positive and upbeat the OP seems to be.
shannaconda
Thank you!
PerroMalcriado
so we hear the assholes more because they are the loudest, not necesarily the majority
Allrighty
I think you hear about them because their opponents have a vested interest in reminding you of them, not even because they're so loud.
Mimsey
In this case, the "loudest" are also the authors, lobbyists, activists, etc. The drivers of the movement. Derp.
FlamParadiddlediddle
as with most things
ReverseTrapTsukasa
When performing my work for clients, I have this thing I use to judge my work priority. I call it the "Hierarchy of the Loudest Screamer."
Seanspeed
Not even just the loudest, but they are also frequently brought up as examples to justify backwards anti-PC beliefs.
Solvanderlyn
Just like the rest of life.
shinyRK9
Prefect summation of the human race.

You copied that word for word from common sense without even citing it as a source. Plagiarizing your answer... I'm sorry but that's an F.

Pretty much
secretmanwhodrinksatwork
On the internet the loudest are the anti-feminist by far.
RheaButt
I honestly don't know why people expect any different, the assholes in a group will always be the loudest because they're the ones who are-
RheaButt
-going to shove it in people's face that they're part of the group because they're the most obsessive over it
kubit
They expect different because What You See Is All There Is and you don't see the silent majority.
RheaButt
I'm saying that the fact that the silent ones are the majority in most cases should be common sense
kubit
As Voltaire said it, "Common sense is not common".
pootitude
glad you took it. as a WMS grad student the hardest thing is getting ppl to understand its about culture, not man hating
Boogley88
I had a similar positive experience in a similar class and it was super helpful in law school.
Blerkherks
Military dudes always say questionable things about everything. It's part of the humor that's required when death is a distinct possibility.
ShamnusMcfee
Most military dudes work surprisingly safe professions. 'Actual scary shit' is a pretty small proportion of personnel.
Seanspeed
Only a small percent of people in the military find themselves in real combat situations.
Blerkherks
It's more the preparing for death that is the catalyst.
JFKsHelmet
I took a women's studies class in college. Myself along with the other males in the class were treated like complete shit.
cheeseriot
Im willing to bet the reason you were greatly badly is cause of how you treated others.
shannaconda
That's not cool! I really wanted more guys to speak up, but I understand their apprehension to do so.
JFKsHelmet
Oh, we spoke up. It only made matters worse.
shannaconda
I'm sorry to hear that.
JFKsHelmet
Not your fault. All feminists aren't the same, but the bad ones are out of this world crazy.
shannaconda
Assholes will be assholes! I hope your experience doesn't shape your view of the field in general.
nasreal
1 I, for one, am shocked that an average group of students from a particular study program would contain, an average number of...
nasreal
2 average people, and a similarly average number of assholes. Shocked, I tell you! It's almost as if most people are painfully average...
nasreal
3 and don't believe crazy bullshit like all men are rapists and say stuff like "die, cis white scum!" What an amazing time to be alive. In..

4 all seriousness to @OP , thank you for a well thought out and fair represtation of a group that imgur ordinarily mocks and hates.
TedTheMan
Is op female?
shannaconda
Did you just assume my gender?
ifihadhandcuffs
Ha ha
TedTheMan
No, I couldn't assume, so I asked.
TheNextHafthorBjornsson
Wonder if OP assumed you were a man, TedTheMan.
TedTheMan
Wouldn't have to assume, my name tells. Just have to accept.
Superchief86
"To ted" could be a verb. Meaning to dress someone as a teddy bear. Therefore your name could be instructional. "The man got tedded. Hard."
prozack8356
A few questions I'll list in following comments if you will humor me
prozack8356
Might have more later
prozack8356
Any other lib ed classes you took besides major?
shannaconda
For the most part, my major kept me incredibly busy. But I was part of a program that required me to take humanities based classes.
prozack8356
Nice. I always liked humanities. How people tick is great.
prozack8356
Was it a large state school or smaller school?
shannaconda
State school. ~30,000 students
prozack8356
So pretty diverse. My most interesting big discussion class was political philosophy. It was...odd. Teacher hated me cause I'm conservative
shannaconda
That's annoying. I have had plenty of classes with mixed ideology and it's never cool to target someone because of a difference of opinion
prozack8356
She graded fairly but was generally meh. Didn't have fun. Poli sci was great though!
prozack8356
What was your favorite discussion you all had? Where loads of good points happened and a lively discussion happened?
shannaconda
There were plenty of fruitful discussions. One of my favorites had to do with consensual relationships between older men and young girls.
shannaconda
Relationships in which the older man agrees to pay young women to date them.
prozack8356
I worked at a bar once and I'd see escorts every once in a while
shannaconda
Oh, that's interesting. Yea, the discussion was fantastic cause it made me question a lot of my own values and opinions.
prozack8356
But that is a weird bit. Ain't gonna lie
prozack8356
What was your major?
shannaconda
Architecture
prozack8356
You focus on big Building or housing and stuff?
shannaconda
Big building
prozack8356
Oooooh. That has to be exciting!!!

American girl here, I think asian guys are some of the most attractive the planet has to offer.
KrAzYAsSGaMeR
As an Asian, I don't appeal to white girls. As a not-scrawny guy, I don't appeal to Asian girls who aren't the "I only date white guys" type
pprmach3t3
I'm just learning that this is a thing! What is this thing?
pxpress
adopted Korean dude raised in America, can confirm I don't appeal to most whites girls nor do I appeal to 'real' Asian girls. Struggleisreal
shannaconda
That's frustrating!
yourebreakingmyballs
I'm a typical Asian guy, and for some reason I seem to attract a lot of black women. I love it, but I have no clue why
pxpress
I've noticed that too and have no idea why. If you figure it out let me know!
Bumbelbree
As a white girl, if I was going to be sexually attracted to anyone it would def be an Asian dude-sucks that some girls don't feel the same.
CaesarBUBBLINZeppeli
You should be considering so many girls go gaga for Korean pretty boys etc
KrAzYAsSGaMeR
These k-pop boys are usually lanky and have over-the-top fashion. I choose not to conform to this fictitious image.
Ralpheroo
it doesn't have to be over the top fashion. Semi-fashionable and semi trendy hair works
Babuiski
As a Chinese guy I can tell you that most Asian guys don't appeal to non-Asians because of their temperament. Maybe it's the culture /1
Babuiski
or the mothers who emasculate their sons, or the lack of an assertive and direct masculine culture, or maybe combination thereof /2
Babuiski
Instead of thinking about what you want in your partner, think about what your ideal partner would find attractive. Once you see it /3
Babuiski
in that way, your perspective and hopefully your chances in the dating world will increase. Don't give up buddy!
KrAzYAsSGaMeR
I agree. My point is, non-Asian girls tend to write off Asian guys immediately based on this assumption. It's an extra obstacle to overcome
SerialKitten666
Have you tried looking in anime clubs or manga sections of bookstores? Lotta white girls who thirst for asian dick...any asian, lol
KangInDaNarth
South east asians like me don't get a lot of love from both sides no matter what.
KrAzYAsSGaMeR
You're telling me. If you're not one of the "main" Asian ethnicities (i.e. Japanese, Korean, or Chinese), you're a "boring" Asian.
WizardOfRaz
Idk, I don't think that's the case with dudes from the Indian subcontinent, but a lot of American people don't think that's REALLY Asia
KangInDaNarth
Some don't even consider us asian.
KrAzYAsSGaMeR
When I play the "Guess what Asian I am" game, very rarely do they guess Viet. Other Viets don't even guess right.
Ralpheroo
I'm Filipino and my experiences are opposite of yours
KRicci
I'm a white girl who used to have a thing for Asian guys in highschool. Their parents always hated me cause I wasn't from their culture :(

Apparently one ex's parents actually encouraged him to date me in college cause he started to get interested in guys...lol

TBH. Im not entirely sure based on the two classes I took. But that is why they have been considering changing the name!
zstorm6
What exactly is your major? When I hear male dominated I immediately go to engineering, as that is my major and my ME class is 6% female.

The junior and senior classes have 0. It's really strange. I do believe having even 1 female can completely change the dynamic of classes

Oh no! I personally enjoyed the class and learned a lot. However, I only took two classes, so I can't speak on behalf of the entire major.

recently and it had to do with it not being as "useful" (since it didn't bring in as much money).

I think the concept of feminism has been misunderstood in the recent years, how do you define it?
shannaconda
Yea, unfortunately a lot of people look only at stereotypes when defining feminism.
tryin2figureitout
Feminism reinvents itself every 10 years or so. A lot of the complaints today are from the last version. And some did hurt a lot of people.
Mitheledh
It's the common case of a vocal minority ruining it for everyone else.
shannaconda
Other than the standard google definition, I would say feminism basically says don't treat people unfairly based on things they can't help.
ifihadhandcuffs
Do you think the term feminist is still needed?
shannaconda
Ooh, good question. I have debated this a lot. I think it is still needed, but I understand why many people feel it should be changed.
ifihadhandcuffs
I guess I hate those types of labels. For example, Irish-American, African-American, Mexican-American, we should all just be Americans

To phrase it better, the use of terminology and rhetoric without considering how language is used by the general populace.
shannaconda
No, but personally, I think people lose arguments when they start throwing out terminology that the general populace doesn't use.
