SAVANNAH, GA
"Our friend Corey Dyer is in the midst of a horribly convoluted, controversial investigation because he was shot in his bed during a home invasion. He needs our help so that he is not overwhelmed with debt and so justice is properly served. See below for a more in depth view into his tribulations. Thank you for any help you are willing to provide.
At five a.m. on Friday, June 3, I received a Facebook message from Corey that he was shot and needed immediate medical attention. I immediately called a dispatcher to send police and an ambulance to his address. I arrived at 5:15 behind the second ambulance to see a Corey being brought out of his front door on a stretcher, a .40 caliber bullet wound in his upper left thigh. Five men, three of which were visibly armed with guns and a knife in his home security footage, had gone into his home in a quiet east side neighborhood in the four o'clock hour, ransacking the house and stealing various electronics and his wallet. Corey was shot in his bed when the intruders realized that it the house was not empty.
While Corey was in the hospital without his phone (or any other personal belongings, for that matter), the thieves maxed his credit card and drained his bank account. When the police finally gave him access to his cell phone on Friday morning, Corey was able to use his home security device app to provide law enforcement crystal clear images of every person that entered his house and exact times of when they did. The photos of the five criminals (one of which being Corey's next door neighbor) faces circulated the Internet with impressive haste and before Friday evening Corey identified one of the men as his next door neighbor. Savannah Chatham metropolitan police department, unfortunately, came through with incredibly disappointing apathy despite what would seem to the lay-person as indisputable evidence of felonious behavior. Corey was left without answers and with no sign of noticeable action from SCMPD until Monday afternoon at three when he was told that there had been no real push to make any arrests or persue his assailants. It wasn't until Tuesday the seventh that one of the attackers, his next door neighbor, was arrested in his home. A stones throw from the scene of the crime.
Corey Dyer is, without question, the hardest working, most tireless, and gracious individual I have the absolute pleasure of knowing. For the last year and a half Corey, who is twenty four years of age and whose family resides in Orlando, FLA, has lived in Savannah, delicately balancing his bar tending job at The Rail Pub and his handy-man day job. A jack of all trades, who works upwards of seventy hours a week without complaint, Corey will still find time to go out of his way to help anyone who may have a problem to solve within his very broad scope of practice. He is a salt of the earth guy who takes extreme pride in his work and enjoys fishing, kayaking, his friends and the company of his pups. Tragically, Corey was not the only victim of the break in. Due to the shock of the incident and possibly some foul play his two year old English bull dog Bella Danger passed away on the Friday afternoon of the incident.
I write you now because Corey will not. It is not in his make up to ask for a hand out, but these are indeed dire circumstances. As if the fear instilled in him by being assaulted in his sleep, the disappointment and frustration of being slighted and treated like a criminal by a police force that we, as a community, are supposed to rely on in times of need, having his bank accounts hopelessly locked up and being shot in the leg rendering him unable to work weren't enough Corey now deals with an emotional void left by the loss of his sweet dog. Corey won't ask for it himself, but he needs help.
Corey provides for himself but shouldering the burden of medical bills, lawyer fees, court costs, relocating his home, the time he will spend unable to work, etc. alone is, frankly, an impossibility. I come to you humbly, as his friend and his voice, to ask for anything that you can afford to help keep Corey's head above water. It has made an immense impact on his morale to see all of the shares and to hear how supportive a community we have here but likes and shares, unfortunately, will not pay his bills. I, as a native of Savannah, have seen our community ban together in times of tragedy time and time again and I know Savannah will not let my friend down. Please, spread the word, share the articles, share his posts, bring to light the problem that we have with law enforcement and violent crime in Savannah and moreover, lend a hand to a guy who would be more than willing to lend you his.
