I, like many, grew up on a steady diet of Tolkien. Criticize the cartoons all you like, it was still a formative part of many people's childhoods. Some of the artistic renderings are truly creative and beautiful, and the same can be said for the new live-action version. Here are some basic side-by-side comparisons of how the films interpreted characters.

The Company- Cartoon

The Company- Live Action

Bilbo Baggins

Gandalf the Grey

Gollum/ Sméagol

Fili and Kili, Thorin's nephews

Both brothers were killed while defending the mortally wounded Thorin Oakenshield in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Dori and Nori

Dori was a dwarf of Durin's Folk who joined The Company with his two brothers, Nori and Ori

Nori was a Dwarf of Durin's folk who lived in the northern Blue Mountains in Thorin's Halls and later the restored Lonely Mountain

Ori

Ori is depicted here holding his book. Gandalf ultimately discovers with his body in Moria during the Fellowship of the Ring. Ori died writing the Book of Mazarbul.

Bifur and Bofur

A descendant of the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm

Also a descendant of the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm

Balin was a Dwarf leader, the son of Fundin, and elder brother of Dwalin. A Dwarf Lord, Balin was old and wise, he was one of Thorin's closest friends and advisors, and was always willing to listen and offer wise counsel. Balin is distantly related to Thorin, and is a descendant of the noble house of Durin.

Durin later went to reestablish the kingdom of Dwarves, Moria, along with Ori and others, but in five years it was taken by Orcs, and he was killed there

Dwalin

Dwalin is the brother of Balin and the youngest son of Fundin.

Oin and Gloin

Oin, Gimli's Uncle

Gloin, Gimli's father

Bombur

Bombur, brother to Bofur and cousin to Bifur

Thorin Oakenshield: Thorin II, also called the Oakenshield, King under the Mountain or the Mountain King,[1] was the son of Thráin II, the older brother of Frerin and Dís, the grandson of King Thrór and the uncle of Fíli and Kíli. Thorin was best known for his deeds as leader of a company that infiltrated the lost Kingdom under the Mountain to take it back from Smaug and for leading an alliance of Men, Dwarves, and Elves in the Battle of the Five Armies.

No explanation needed really, but the rightful heir to the throne of the Dwarves. General badass. Dies in the Battle of the Five Armies

"Elvenking"

Aka Thranduil, only son of Oropher. Ruler of the Woodland Realm in the Second and Third Ages. Helped fight against Sauron in the War of the Ring. Father of Legolas.

Trolls!

Goblin king

"The Great Goblin"

Smaug- much more feline in the cartoon

Smaug, voiced by Beelzebub Crampyleg

Thank y'all muchly. Send nerds.

It makes me wonder if all the research and effort was made to put in that one joke?

That's the movie that got me into fantasy film's. Bless you fellow Imgurian, bless you.

Cartoon was truer to the book, the dwarves were a bunch of whiney cunts the whole time. And Smauge left the cave giving them a free win.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Much prefer the ‘77 cartoon.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Who the fuck hates the cartoons?? They're closer to the books than the movies ever would be and they're done so well!

I didn't like that Jackson's foot hair was way more sparse pubes than full beard, or even silky pelt.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Despite all complaints as to the Peter Jackson films the guy who played Bilbo looked exactly like the picture of him in my head

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All those dwarves and PJ used ZERO fucking time on our investment in them. They felt more two dimensional than their animated counterparts.

I could just hug you OP! Thank you for putting this together, love! Love! Love!

The elves are radically different, and Thorin became, well, quite improved in the lady appealing department.

Cartoon Thranduil looks like the Grinch.

FRODO AND THE NINE FINGERRRSSSS AND THE RING OF DOOOOOOMMM

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Why does he have nine fingers? Where is the ring of doom?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The ring is with Frodos 10th finger, in the belly of Gollum all nice and toasty in the fires of Mt. Doom

One thing I really enjoyed when watching the animated movie was the style. The Last Unicorn, a fav was the same.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Same company made both and a lot of the classic stop-motion Christmas specials. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rankin/Bass_Productions

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh thank you for that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does Bifur have an axe sticking out of his head???

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup and it causes him to speak nonsensical drivel until the 3rd movie where it pops out killing a goblin, then he talks normally.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lmao! I have got to see that!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's supposed to be speaking ancient Khuzdul lol

I love the first three PJ LOTR movies as much as I hate the three PJ hobbit movies. I probably rented that cartoon 50 times as a kid.

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 2

The visuals are neat, but the more i read the books, the more i hate the movies.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I have it on VHS. Love that movie.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The cartoons were much more loyal to the book. Goes for all of the lotr cartoons. I loved them. Not a huge fan of the movies.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

For the most part I liked the movies, but some of the changes irritated me. It seemed weird seeing them "redeem" Thorin

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. And FUCKING ELF CHICK AND LEGOLASS didn't need to be there

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Legolas made sense being there, perhaps should have just been a cameo, though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah like 3 minutes. Not the whole book

I got smacked for humming the Chariots of Fire theme when I first saw this in the theater.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Totally worth it. Well played.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The animations are far more disturbing

8 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 1

As opposed to the midgets with facial hair that would make dwarven women hide in shame?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loved the animated version (didn't like the renditions of the elves, though). It has a much more magical feeling to it than the movies.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Lester Abrams did the character designs but was over-ruled by a Rankin-Bass manager who wanted halos on the elves.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is why I prefer them. I like the Smaug and Goblin King of the newer versions, but everyone else is too pretty.

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 11

The racial -2 char penalty is not effectively reflected in the movie.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many of the dwarves look great, but a couple of them just aren't dwarfy.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I like smaug in the old one. The feline features are more unique and I think in the book they say he had cat like features

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You like scrotum beard?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

"Scrotum beards?" "SCROTUUUUMMM BEARDS!"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Hobbit goblins were awesome, the stuff of nightmares. One of them went into space to fight the Silverhawks.
