When you develop a video game, it’s as if it takes on a life of its own. I have been working on a game with two friends for the better part of a decade now and I wanted to share with you how it’s grown.

Everything is born from an idea. My friend has had the pleasure of traveling the world, and has sparked inspiration from so many places. For this game, it happened while he was on a trip to Scotland taking part in a “Ghost Tour”. These tours are guided walks through the city that tell you all about the myths and legends that surround it. Learning about the witches and ghosts that haunt a region can be eye opening.

We then did a lot of research about Scottish folklore and learned about the witch hunts that occurred in North Berwick during the 16th century. Playing as a badass witch being hunted down by the Kingsmen sounded like a great backdrop to a video game, so we ran with it.

Now we had an idea for the theme, but what about the gameplay? This isn’t our first rodeo, and when we set out to design something we always try to mix different genres with unique mechanics. We are huge fans of the Hero Defense subgenre, but this one would revolve around a Time Travel mechanic. It also HAD to have some form of co-op in there, even if it doubled the workload.

These core mechanics would stay the same throughout the development process, but things changed so much as time went on. Graphics improved over time, but characters come and go. Plot points shift and evolve. Spells are there one month and gone the next. At some point. you even start questioning your ability to make a game with how much stuff changes.

Speaking of the core mechanics, the time travel spell… What a mess! We created our own deterministic system from the ground up to run the entire thing. Our system will recreate exactly what the player did in a previous timeline, and allows us to evaluate their effect on different timelines. It was a challenge figuring out how to relay this important information back to the player so they could plan effective strategies.

At first the time spell was incredibly open ended too. People could cast it whenever they wanted, but that created a lot of problems. What if the player didn’t cast it when we expected? Players would get frustrated easily. Solving problems like this helped create our most iconic character, Amannan, the bear-centaur. They cast the time spell for the player and act as the “home base” for the hero defense.

We spent countless hours trying to make each level as unique from one another as possible. We had this huge white board with every single one of our levels on it. We had to keep track of a time travel storyline, create a nice progression curve, redo tutorials, swap levels, and all of that on top of doing story rewrites. It felt never ending, but eventually you get there.

This game was a labor of love and I can't help but marvel at how far we've come. What started as a simple idea sparked by a ghost tour in Scotland has blossomed into a fully realized video game. But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this journey is how the game itself has evolved alongside us. It's a reflection of our growth as developers, as storytellers, and as individuals.

So to anyone out there embarking on their own creative journey, I offer this piece of advice: Embrace the evolution. Embrace the changes, the setbacks, and the moments of doubt. For it's through these experiences that true innovation flourishes, and dreams transform into reality.

Ohhh I like that idea. During a bad time of witch persecutions she becomes humanities only hope.

Soooo, what I’m getting from this is that the religious witch-hunters were right all along?

Thank you! It was a long journey and I really wanted to share how some of the elements came together.

Looks great, love the development story, but what is it called? I'm interested, where can I find it? Yes, do advertise! No use telling someone about your product if you don't tell us what it's called. If I missed that, I apologize. Just trying to encourage interest in this. 👍

Hey, really glad you enjoyed the story! You can find the game on Steam, it's called TimeMelters.

interesting to see the very rudimentary project management board.

I don't play video games but this has my attention! Very intriguing concept of time travel in a game!

Ya, they never burned any witches in North America, but definitely did in Europe. I wouldn't want to be that guard either lol but you can learn some crazy stuff studying history from around the world!

The concept and gameplay seem very cool, and the setting is unique!

Thank you! We tried our best to make it stand out.

Loved this post. Game dev is an incredible journey, full of tough challenges and it's a small miracle to finish and ship a game. Congratulations to you and the team!

Which engine? When the wolf suddenly stops at the stone archway, it looks like the collider is larger than the model.

It's running in unity

It's a pretty poor choice to vindicate historical atrocities like this. Might as well make a game about undermining the German state during WWI.

They're crafty people!

Not in reality

The creative process is similar to writing a book, sans visual graphics and tech (books are visual ofc, only it happens in a single brain and in different style for every reader). I wish you luck in your endevour :)

Thanks, you too!

Is @op trying to steal content from @viibii3? /gallery/DOiD7Z1 or is this just a paid account to promote your game?

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 5

Maybe this is simon or adam?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

This is Adam, same name he streams on twitch under. DuoMTL. his cross stitch streams are great.

Is there a link for the demo? I didn't even see the name of the game up there, but my eye sight is bad

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It's called TimeMelters! The demo is available on Steam.

Have fun! Let me know what you think

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

do not love how u started with proper third person centered then went over to the bloody off center OTS migraine inducing angle. Must do the same thing every other game dev does cuz.. REASONS.!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

Ah yeah, no way they could just like that angle. No, it must be because they're conforming to something, just to spite you personally.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Been playing this since the early access. absolutely love the concept and execution ^_^

Did you build in the Agnes Nutter gambit ? (* Good Omens)

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

I've heard so many great things about Good Omens, but I have not had the chance to read the book yet, one day! I've been reading The Foundation series currently, maybe when I'm done that!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's a great book if you are familiar with British cultural cliches, but the sense of humour and references can be difficult to follow.

Y'all got any of those Steam links?

Only comments on their own posts, a massive 8 month gap since their last post. This is probably a paid for account and definitely an ad. An imgurian would’ve been on Imgur more especially procrastinating as dev.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

And they would’ve shown in progress work over the last 6 years. Not just decided to share their hard work at the end on Imgur

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

eh, I'm not mad about it. this is interesting, and sounds neat. usually when brands come in to try and "go viral" there's no question that they don't belong here. This guy is cool enough that he might just be a lurker?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m not mad either, it’s good practice for spotting a fake account with an agenda though. Looking at their last few attempts to go viral, they do fit into that the category of “not belonging here” especially since all the accounts they have used have barely interacted with the community. Their last post only replied to like 3 comments in total

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately I agree. Frustratingly, because a few years ago I saw this game “advertised” the same way it is here…but obviously a different account. Why switch accounts if this is such a labor of love?

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Thanks, I was able to find their last attempt to make a viral ad 4 months ago /gallery/DOiD7Z1

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

You da man. I think.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

And they're using alt accounts to feign interest in the comments as well.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

I think a lot of the accounts are people that support the dev on Twitch. I am also here from Twitch.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I can assure you I'm a real person lol and not a bought bot. I follow one of the devs on twitch getting updates and hearing about progress has been a fun adventure in itself

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Tbf I don’t even mind devs putting ads on Imgur, I’m not a fan of deception though

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

So.... I need a link or a name to at least search for, my friend.

Thank you so much! We really appreciate the support! If you remember, come back here and let me know what you think when you get around to playing it!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

@op, suggestion: if they're not an option, let people skip ahead in the tutorial or select a section from the main menu? Accidentally clicked "restart mission" thinking it would take me back to the start of the save the town quest, but it returned me to the start of the entire tutorial.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reset checkpoint would have probably sent you back to where you wanted, but maybe that wasn't nearly as far back as you would have liked, and restart mission was way too far. I can understand the frustration, sorry about that... Its possible we could add an extra checkpoint somewhere in the middle.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That would be nice, was just trying for practice with the big town saving-strategy area, and went back to the beginning of the game. Skip/repeat conditions for those early tutorial parts, once completed, would still be nice. I need practice against that demon centaur thing you have to shoot in the back. :)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is the challenge mode, but it could be cool to add a training area or something. Thanks for the idea! Hope you're enjoying the game!
