Screw this imgur, I'm using adblock on here from now on.

EDIT: @sarah has reached out and informed me that the imgur staff is working on it, and that they do not allow ads with sound! all hail @sarah!

don't forget the ads they disguise as posts

Firefox + uBlock Origin = best mobile browsing experience

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry, I can't hear you over my adblock.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I have AdBlock and AdBlock Plus, I know I'm not supposed to double wrap but it keeps me safe.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to have adblock turned off. But then I got a malicious site warning about one of the ads.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Oh the irony

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should also use a Script-blocker like uMatrix or NoScript to make sure you have control over who can execute in your browser, and you /?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

/2 get to control who can track you on sites. I'm only allowing as much as is needed for the site to function, and keep everything else off.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had a bit try and chat me. Dafuq imgur

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That has happen to me quite a lot recently, but that probably doesn't have anything to do with imgur adds.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

well lets throw the name Opera in and leave ...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ads are fine as long as they are safe and non intrusive

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd agree up to a point. But the problem is that ads are either one, the other or both of those options.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Annoying ads are the reason adblockers exist. If they would've stuck with ads with no movement and no sound, there might not be ad blockers.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Report any bad ads. Ads on Imgur are not meant to play sound, redirect you without consent, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They actually don't. Report the ad. Although I don't understand why they don't just change to an ad provider that does their job correctly.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mobile users should check out Adguard, you can't get it from the iOS or Google store but only from there website but it works really well.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is a thing now? I always use adblock. Fuck ads.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want to support imgur by enabling ads, but I also don't want any malware on my system... now what :/

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

uMatrix or NoScript to disallow scripting unless explicitly allowed by you. It's the safe way to surf the web.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use AdBlock and NoScript everywhere. Kind of a pain when I have to whitelist site scripts I want, but worth it for the lack of viruses.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You might want to give uMatrix a try. Its like NoScript but you can block basically anything. Needs some time to configure tho

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Praise NoScript. It's a glorious thing. Makes everything you do in the browser a lot more secure.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Word of advice, always use adblock. The net is like a Nairobi brothel.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 4

True. Also consider HTTPS everywhere and Ghostery. Freedome VPN rocks too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for the sentiment and if I had the power I'd give you another +1 for the metaphor.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@sarah pls Oh right she doesn't reply if it's an actual issue.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Really? In that case, I want GIFs with sound.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

Also known as videos

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Lot of research, headscratching and technical figuring-out, but you'll be able to do quite a lot. Not Windows but you may find it useful

Interesting - I was wondering how some were getting through suddenly.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can also use ScriptSafe on your browser. PEW PEW.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also consumes less memory and CPU and works better (more ads blocked, inlcuding Outbrain and Taboola, which Adblock can't handle)

Don't you think I've tried? But I never found a way to block them across all sites, whereas uBlock does it out of the box.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can also manually block ads that for some reason still show up, problem solved.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only Non intrusive ads are they not? What's your problem with them?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I've been burnt by driveby JavaScript injection attacks in "non-intrusive" ads far too often. Fuck them, police your content or I will.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only when adblock approves that they aren't harmful, I support creators and I like this, but you actually have the option to turn it off!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

and if you have an IQ in the double digits (doesnt need to be too high) you can figure out theres a way to opt out of those ads...

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 19

I like how you just implied that milions of highly intelligent people with a much higher IQ than you must haveAlowIQCauseTheyArentTechSavy

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 9

no, Im suggesting people with Low IQ's cant figure out an option that pops up infront of them when they install ad block..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

no. they explicated that anyone with a double digit IQ should be intelligent enough to figure out the basically user friendly controls.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Only if you opt in.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 7

Incorrect. Ads started creeping in on me with Adblock and AdblockPlus. I went with uBlock, nothing :D

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 12

Be warned, adblock and adblock plus are completely separate companies

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's because of their acceptable advertisement campaign, which you can disable

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

That's opt out though, not opt in.

http://simple-adblock.com No you can. I'm not really sure what they're saying. I don't like IE, but it's pretty irrelevant.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

If it has extensions you can block ads. I mean most IE extensions added ads - but I digress....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. That's why it needs upgrading. Chrome, Firefox, anything that allows an adblock add-on is an upgrade.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

IE is legacy and is not getting new features. AdBlock has been available for Edge if you choose.

You can install Adblock Plus on Android. Just need to change your proxy settings to point through it, which is automatic on a rooted device.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Opengur is better than the mobile app and had no adds, but I think they got a cease and desist cause there's no more updates

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Well, I've found Ublock doesnt always block all ads, and Adblock doesnt block all ads, so I use both to block as many as possible.

Ublock origin puts a smaller strain on your computer and works just as well, if not better than adblock. And yes having 2 is pointless

I use adblock+ plus on firefox disabled just for easier element hiding helper addon. Much easier to quickly get rid of annoying elements.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for answering my question. :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+ many adblockers work with advertisers and let some through. uBlock does not, and you can right click and add filters easily.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i use both

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Piss

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And uMatrix for blocking shady JavaScript on sites.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Any reason you don't just use uMatrix ? It can do everything uBlock does. I switched from Request Policy + NoScript to uMatrix

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

uMatrix only blocks scripts, so you would still see obnoxious ads, just not video and audio ones. I don't think it would block youtube ads.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

However, i might be wrong about this, I should give it a try since I already block scripts from ad networks with a block-by-default policy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It can block everything. cookies, css, images, plugins, scripts, xhr, frames and others (which is mainly websocket stuff i believe) >>

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

>> I never see ads anywhere, but it needs some time to setup your rules for comfortable surfing to be honest.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hear from my 'friend' that uMatrix breaks a lot of porn sites until you basically 'allow all' scripts. Not that I would know >.>

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you need to allow-all to make a site work, it is probably too dangerous to visit. Most major news outlets are the same problem.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For pornhub you have to allow scripts and "other" from phn">.com">phncdn.com and mcdn3.com inclusive all subdomains. Or so i heard.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In a lot of cases uMatrix will make broken sites work by simply excluding the "pop over" bullshit the site does.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But even on sites where you do need to allow-all (such as sites I use for work), its worth it to have for all the other shitty sites.

I reccomend getting Ghostery too. It's a chrome extension and there's a mobile browser version too.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I second this, uBlock Origin does good with ads, but Ghostery blocks trackers which follow your behaviour online to sell to advertisers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ghostery is owned by an ad company and sells your info of the ads that you block. Privacy Badger is better.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's also available for Firefox.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The blocking trifecta!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. Gotta make that 32gb of ram useful for something

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I'd recommend you get a script-blocker as well, (I use uMatrix for Chrome and NoScript for Firefox). Disables a lot of tracking ++

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

. I will need this

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NoScript has saved me from loading tons of dodgy malware not to mention it blocks annoying media that autoloads, makes noise, and hides.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, NoScript saved me from a Facebook-virus attack vector. But I'm currently leaning a bit more towards uMatrix as a full solution.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

. Gonna just leave this here to remind myself later

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make sure to remind yourself later. Actually, if you have time now, you should get them. uMatrix might also be a bit easier to understand.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alas, on my work laptop right now (which I already downloaded Adblock and ABP on long ago but hesitant to add anymore extensions).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any reason you don't use uMatrix in FF too ? I used RequestPolicy + NoScript before but then switched to uMatrix on all Browsers.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not really, I just recently acquired uMatrix, and I'm kinda in love with it. I'm considering using it everywhere, as you do.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why is that better?

9 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 2

To add on sirfirenewts comments it's lighter, uses less resources, also gives you more control. uMatrix is also worth looking up (Advanced).

How about adblock? It has the option to disable acceptable ads, and honestly that is better than blocking all ads

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thnx :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can still turn off even acceptable ads with abp though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

also acceptable ads are not the real issue. Problem are ads that are too big, flashing, loud, lead to spam, virues, etc. pages.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

2. Is popup and sound ads or webpages that double their bandwidth because of adz

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

You can disable the whitelist on adblock, I've forgotten what ads even look like, also element hiding helper is the bomb

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

The element hiding helper is the only reason I still have adblock+ installed. I run it otherwise disabled because Ublock does rest better

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly i just use 2 adblocks and ublock origin, why not?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love to "headshot" annoying web pages with element hiding helper. :D

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But isn't it only Adblock Plus that does that? Adblock doesn't I thought?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Correct. AdBlock and ABP are NOT the same. AdBlock is the good one - it's never failed me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not that I know of. People seem to thing "adblock" refers to ABP, when it really is just the general term for blucking ads.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Tbf acceptable ads is what we should be striving for. Ive got no issues with ads. they allow me to use services for free. What i dislike

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 5

For me the problem is that it esentially makes ABP the gatekeeper and they have shown in the past to not deserve that roll

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The issue is the 'acceptable ads' ABP allows are simply those who pay ABP money to get put on the 'acceptable' list.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well, they deserve money for providing a service. Are you going to pay them? The only issue would be if they let unacceptable ads through

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No we shouldn't. Ads have to die. Especially ABPs "acceptable ads", they are either hidden (autogenerated affiliate links in blog posts) 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

, ads from companies that paid ABP's extortion fee/bribe or ads by their own advertising companies. Fuck ADP. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Ok, i hope you enjoy paying for literally every single site on the web then.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

The problem is that after 20 years of internet I don't trust anyone whose job it is to vet ads. Because they're either malicious or retarded

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Because most go through google Adsense. So they physically cant vet their ads. As its done through google.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Agreed. I tried the whitelist/acceptable route but was on CNN when an ad tried to install malware. F that. Total block now on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shame there aren't any good ad services out there. Wouldn't even take much ... e.g. limit it to 1 PNG in the system, no JS (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gonna give it a try thanks for the suggest!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AdBlock Pro and AdBlock are NOT the same. AdBlock is fantastic, ABP is... not.

Don't think so. Downloading it still brings you to the "Just so you know, I quit my job to make AdBlock, and I never charge. Plz donate"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

don't forget the ads that link you to some free viruses

9 years ago | Likes 3975 Dislikes 8

Yay free viruses

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or the ones that just download them for you... 100% hassle free!

9 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

I've been paying for my viruses, you mean there's a better way?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The ads recommended by Dr Mantis Toboggan, M.D. are the best!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought they fixed that problem.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The problem is they approve what ads they allow, and they don't seem to give a fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I once took the time to report that I keep getting sent to various malware sites on mobile. I got a response, but they really don't take(1)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it seriously. Just recommended to report individual bad ads.(2/2)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There's a lot of shit going around with disreputable ad companies; adblock and no-script will help. Your computer > their revenue.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or just hijack your browser.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 word. piehole

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, how I miss the good old days of unsolicited website visits, when not every single thing existed for profit, some was just straight fun

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There's a correlation between that, and how all sites had that fresh early 90's Geocities look, though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Back when people made sites because they thought people might genuinely be interested, rather than just hawking clickbait and malware.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you ignore it for a while, it turns orange. If you ignore it for a long time, it turns red.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

What if you continue to ignore it at that point? Robot apocalypse?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure it autoinstalls the first virus it finds if you ignore it for too long.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It autoinstalls on relaunch

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look in to uBlock Origin.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Do you know of a good app to block ads on Android?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Firefox with the ublock origin add on, i've not seen an ad since.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm reluctant to switch from chrome considering how I've synced it with my other devices and my accounts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My phone's rooted, so I use AdFree. Blocks banner ads in almost every app, not sure about web surfing, I mostly read news on my phone

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Free?! Where??

9 years ago | Likes 953 Dislikes 4

My reaction exactly :D They usually come with free RAM, too!

Just click on one of the ads here. You have to disable your ad-blocker first, though.
