This is an english bulldog puppy with a cleft palate intubated and being prepped for surgical repair.
Prepping the palate for closure requires using existing tissue.
Sewing it up!
Closed as far back as we could reach! We also infused platelet rich plasma to decrease healing time and promote healthy tissue growth
Waking up!
A few hours after surgery!

Bulldogs are a veterinary nightmare. Don't buy dogs just cuz you think the breed is cute. Do your goddamn homework

YES
WhiteRiceWhiteMeat
@OP so that brownish looking stuff is the roof of its mouth or palate? But why did you cut it? I mean it looks infected I guess I'm just 1/2
MissusSpareTire
& a hard palate like humans. http://www.dailydogdiscoveries.com/tag/dog-hard-palate/
MissusSpareTire
The brownish part is the palate, which is the roof of the mouth. In dogs, the palate has ridges known as palatine folds. Dogs have a soft 1/
WhiteRiceWhiteMeat
As to what you did exactly 2/2 @OP
Aloafanope
The roof of the mouth is called the palate and that isn't an incision in it. It's actually a birth defect that some animals get
Aloafanope
By cutting the skin around the cleft and then sewing the two sides together to cover the cleft. Also, sorry about how my replies look
Aloafanope
I think the cleft palate is more common in dogs, not too sure about that. Here she is closing up the cleft as it can affect the dog's health
Linvak
I thought it was a nutsack at first.. the internet has ruined me

I'm still not 100% on what it is.. the puppy's tongue?

I thought it was a vagina, then thought it was some sort of organism under a microscope.

I'm so glad all of us just see testicles now

I legitimately thought it was some odd kind of food dish from the thumbnail. Spent so much time in utter confusion before scrolling down.

At least you wouldn't report a picture of a ballsack as being Iraq on the news

I was thinking "the fuck is op licking"
harpoonyourboyfriend
Said out loud "Is that a testicle? ...No, it's a puppy." Got weird looks from my boyfriend.
positiveleroy
You should probably harpoon him, then.
RosegoldEverything
To be fair, there definitely are animals that closely resemble ballsacks..
FerretYawns
I don't know why but the word "nutsack" always makes me lose my shit lol
mallywanders
Yet another reason why breeding dogs is awful. It causes puppies like this one to require surgery just to eat without asphyxiating.
SchrodinergsSpy
My brain quickly saw this as, "yet another reason why breastfeeding dogs is awful." ... I need sleep.
mallywanders
XD don't worry, everyone misreads. But also, please don't try to breast feed any dogs. I fear for your nipples.
Hexarcy00
but the amazing variety of dog breeds is because people breed dogs
mallywanders
Saying that interbreeding of dogs will reduce variety is like saying that humans all look the same. The US is a "melting pot", and the most
mallywanders
"Interbred" among us are the most unique looking. It takes a lot of work to find doppelgangers.
Hexarcy00
okay, I never said anything about reducing variety. Thousands of years of selective breeding has created hundreds of unique breeds
KraftyKev
Save an animal life, adopt. Dont go to a breeder. Just please don't.
kONthePLACE
My thought as well.
chickNlittle
Can't you breed out the genetic predisposition for cleft palate? (Honest question)
Kalid19
Yes, but it would require focusing on the breeding of traits that arent judged in contests. So, its a secondary goal.
Rayxzerox
Yes, but to do it without changing other traits of the breed, like a pushed in snout and a wider jaw, is near impossible.
Syrmerlin
You could try, but recessive traits are hard to eliminate from a population completely, and inbreeding can bring them right back.
Theguywhoruinseverything
Do you mean purebred ?
mallywanders
Even "designer breeds" still have these problems.
Theguywhoruinseverything
Wouldn't they have less problems then less say pure breeds
Theguywhoruinseverything
Like just a comman mongrel who's parents could have been a springer spanial and sheep dog
mallywanders
Designer breeds do have less severe problems than purebreeds, but they also get susceptibility to the problems of both. I'll give an example
CethinLux
Responsible breeders will work to prevent this with genetic testing and spaying/neutering did with issues
mallywanders
The rarity of responsible breeders makes this argument counterproductive, because it enables people to blindly assume they've found
mallywanders
A responsible breeder.
Mairoa
Then teach people to demand the actual paperwork for genetic testing. I refuse to further talk to any breeder who won't send me pics of it.
laiskamato
All Silken Windhounds are swabbed and tested when they're puppies. One of many reasons to love the breed. :)
BigRedDawg103
It's a genetic defect. It can literally happen to any dog. The roof of the mouth just didn't develop fully.
RevengeOfThePotatomancer
It happens to many animals too, including humans.
mallywanders
Hemophilia can occur in any human population, but it's ridiculously common among English nobility due to inbreeding.
mallywanders
It's a much more common issue in short nosed breeds, along with major breathing issues.
sheldondatta
Selective breeding increases the expression of deleterious allels. Makes genetic defects more common. It's bad, bruh.
SpikedSquirrel
Ya now this poor guy keeps living and has a chance to spread it's bad genetics. Would be better for dogs to let the week die not help them.
BigRedDawg103
It's really not. It's a recessive trait so both parents have to have it. Any responsible breeder would breed away from it.
ifyouwereahotdog
Agreed 100%
GerberLegalTeam
I notice the dogs forelimbs are shaved and one bandaged? Was that for an IV? Just curious.
MiseryLoves1
IVs. My cat had to get a catheter put in and his little arms are shaved like that. Looks like he has gloves on lol.
dotheevolution1364
Yep! Likely tried to hit a vein on one forelimb and then had to go with the other. Cephalic veins are difficult to thread on pups and cats
PunishMentor
Then why participate in it, in the end you may help a few but there are so many more being created
RandomAbscessMemories
Are you literally suggesting letting a puppy die just to make a statement?
AgressorBunx
The dog is right there and alive why wouldnt you help it
PunishMentor
Because you are enabling the breeders and buyers who will create SO many more suffering doggos
AgressorBunx
Oh so a vet not helping a dog and letting it die will make the owners realize its not such a good idea to buy poor bred dogs?
RandomAbscessMemories
Are you literally suggesting letting a puppy die just to make a statement?
PunishMentor
If it contributes to not enabling the immoral breeding and buying of puppies incompatible with life without human intervention... YES
RandomAbscessMemories
Would you do the same for a human child with a genetic defect? Let them die because they require intervention to live? What about premies?
