Changes over the last seven years in Grand Circus Park

The James Scott Mansion

The Cass Plaza apartments are being renovated.

The Strathmoore Apartments, recently renovated.

Part of the historic American Beauty Electric Irons building was unfortunately demolished to make way for the parking lot of a biosciences center. The new building is actually adjacent to the one pictured, and incorporates part of the older structure.

Work is slowly being done on the Farwell Building.

Renovation of the Wurlitzer Building, once in danger of being demolished is nearly complete.

Many of Capitol Park's old buildings are being restored.

Brush Park will be changing dramatically over the next year, as many of the remaining houses are restored and new ones are built.

Patterson Terrace is being restored.

Work on the Book Tower continues.

Woodward Avenue Presbyterian is seeing slow but steady progress as the roof is replace.

Work recently started on the Metropolitan building.

New construction along Woodward.

Some gaps along Woodward are being filled in with apartments.

The former Michigan Central Bank has been restored.

The former Tall-Eez shoes building across the street also restored.

The Stott Building is finally getting its full renovation, after years of starts and stops.

The former Seward hotel is also being worked on.

The old Southwest Detroit hospital has been gutted in preparation for conversation into... something.

There is little progress at the Brewster-Wheeler rec center, which is supposed to be renovated in the next year or two.

And lastly, the new streetcar system is in testing right now and should be fully operational in March.

Not to mention the work on Little Caesars arena and surrounding area. Not a renovation but an improvement to the entertainment district...

Do you guys have that Robocop statue up?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Now all we need is a police officer named Alex Murphy to die and become Robocop

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I see what you did there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good to see Detroit swinging up. I'm from Cleveland, so you know, solidarity and all

Dan Gilbert is the man.

See, gentrification has its perks!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Now that I think of it, we've all been crapping on Chicago recently, and Detroit's looking pretty good.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Hell, even the Lions have made the playoffs 2 of the past 3 seasons.

Detroit has amazing architecture

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Yer it's called gang violence it's very modern

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Really the amazing part about it is that it's a city frozen in time in terms of architecture. It's one of the only instances of urban decay

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It really does. I went down with a friend (architect student) and was blown away by some of the buildings he showed me

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seriously. I had no idea. Just amazing examples of about 100 years of style.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Detroit was one of the wealthiest cities in the world less than 150 years ago. There's a lot of beautiful stuff here.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

All I really know about Detroit is cars and Kid Rock. Enjoy both tbh.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT BOB SEGER!! Sorry Bob.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I went to Detroit in 2010 I think went back in 2015 you guys have 1000% improved

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

The difference between 2015 and now is equally amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

So in two more years it will be an elven city with flying cars and towers suspended by magic?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey! I live there! It's pretty fantastic. Any other Detroit Imgurians?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Quicken loans has also been quietly buying up property all over the city for the past 2 years. Something is going on.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not gonna downplay Gilbert's role in this but he has ulterior motives for all of this.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

surely....love to see this progress though

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, duh. Nobody invests without expectation of some return.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@FriendlySkynet, what is your opinion on Robocop? Friend or foe?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure about him yet... will see

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They supposed to assign static IP to each train or something?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also note Michigan Central Station got a face lift as well with the replacement of all 300+ windows. It looks a hell of a lot better

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm still in shock it happened, and makes me wonder what Moroun is up to with it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I heard the city made him do it. If true, good for them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Since when has he done anything that the city told him to do? Or for the good of the city, for that matter?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Techno originated in Detroit! And then house music came about a few hours west on I-94 (Chicago). The midwest is all 'bout that unce unce.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember. House music started at a warehouse. Good times.

Coming to Detroit for Movement in May. Love the music scene.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fellow Michigander, want to move there someday.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

A city abandoned by the companies it built, the country it saved (during ww2) and the people it elected.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sry bout my ignorance but wtf happened in detroit?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How's the job market? And the housing, we looking to get out of SC for new scenery

...I love this city! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYPqA4slnbQ

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, real question. Can anyone explain what happened to Detroit? Semi-broad strokes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatupppp (showing some Detroit love)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Positive effects of gentrification are always good to see.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ayy fellow Detroiter

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Born and raised there -- so glad the Fisher building is still glorious. (I worked there for years)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Also the new show Detroiters is great. And it is nothing but Detroit love.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I worked on that show. :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's funny how the opening scene was shot in Livonia on ep 1. I laughed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Housing prices are great too! You can get a whole house for under 10 grand.

9 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 3

Yeah but the wings suck this year.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's literally cheaper than most houses in south Africa

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey now, buy a crap house for 10 grand now, sell it for 60 grand in a few years

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 GRAND!? What kind of magical wonderland do you live in!?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The magical Wonderland of poverty stricken Detroit.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Damn, is that true?

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Paid ~$20k for my Detroit house 4yrs ago.Put $8k into it.Safe neighborhood.Close to work, parks, markets, a big mall.Now worth around $45k.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So, it's not unreasonable to think that people wanting an investment could end up helping restore the city? If so, that's awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but not the best parts and it will need work to be livable - and better plan on protecting it.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Additionally we have nice incentives for moving to and restoring the city

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Protecting it?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Large dogs and guns... maybe a tiger or something

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So is it time to move there? How is the job market there these days?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As good as most places. If you buy in the city there is also a lot of industry in the suburbs as well.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But it still takes $20k to make it code worthy.. but still, a 1920 Victorian 2000 sq ft house for under 40k? All over the place.

9 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

And it only comes with a few ghosts from the roaring 20s

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

40k in Milano is just a single cabinet

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Singaporean here. Sign me up too. 40k gets me a motorcycle. 400k gets me a 1000sqft public housing apartment on 99 years lease!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Remind me never to live in Singapore... Jesus, that's outrageous. I'll stick to cheap-ass rent.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jesus Christ. It can cost that much just for a kitchen extension in Ireland. This made me sad :(

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was looking to buy a 2 bed in Dublin. 200k at the cheapest end. You'd really need 260k plus for anything semi-decent.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As an Australian, holy shit sign me up

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

You sure you wanna deal with Trump? Or do you want to wait a bit?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 10

Pretty sure living in Australia with death looming behind every corner is scary.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

40k would struggle to get me a garage in my area of the UK. £200,000 for a flat.... a small flat.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It costs us 40k split between 4 of us to rent our 2 bed 2 bath, 600 sq ft apartment for a year in my college town

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't even think you can buy vacant land here for $40,000

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Theres a part of me that just wants buy tons of land in Detroit. Go there buy a city block.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It might set you back a whole $500. You'd honestly spend more in taxes.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Damn, forreal? I'm used to $300k+ for a moderately sized house

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'll feel ya bro. There are 1 bedroom apartments near me going for £340K....

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can understand from a practical standpoint but I still morn the loss of all that lovely Ivy on the mansion in #2

9 years ago | Likes 2753 Dislikes 20

The op of this comment probably.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It's just the season, look closely and the branches are still attached to the walls, in spring it'll bloom again

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was thinking that, then imagined New Owner standing outside yelling "IT WAS IN THE POINTING! I 'M PLANTING NEW IVY IN SPRING! PROMISE"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too much Ivy can be problematic as it can weigh a structure down and vermin tend to like to infest it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree, it looks lovely. But it weakens structure and morta. I live in a 400 year old building and ivy used to be a big problem

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate ivy. They should warn you in high school to not buy a house with any ivy within a mile radius.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or bamboo. Looks great, but ruins anything in its path in a matter of months.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're connected my friend.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'll be back. That shit's invasive as fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TBH, the cloudy sky contributes to the feeling of loss as well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*mourn

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

If I remember correctly, there is an HGTV episode about that house being restored.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What show?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Upon more research of my cloudy memory, it wasn't this building but the Ransom Gillis House on the show Rehab Addict.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ivy ALWAYS finds a way. It will grow back.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It probably has something to do with the dates, the first pic was taken in summer and the second in February.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Honestly, one was from summer, the other was from winter, it could still potentially grow back.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I you look close you see there's still roots or something on some of the wall, though it might just be weathering.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya, I can see that...I was going to mention it, but saw the other comment already mentioning it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I liked it too but I believe it was taken down to repair the structure of the building. Wish they could have done something like Wrigley.

9 years ago | Likes 543 Dislikes 1

No love for the train station? I just drove by it today to go down to the stationary engineers union hall and they've damn near finished the

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

windows

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well Wrigley probably had more people tending and monitoring it as well as a lot more money to spend to keep it.

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 0

....Unlike the city of Detroit...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I also don't think - despite the semi-frequent renovations to the park (including the current one), that they've needed to touch that wall.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I hope they replant it. It would look awesome with the whole place covered in ivy.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Sadly ivy structurally destroys brick. Very pretty. Very costly damage.

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

ivy might be bad but some flowering cherry or plum trees would sure help. just one or two small ones would at least make it less barren.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Aww, that's too bad. I had no idea.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It grows and latches into any cracks and gradually destroys it, much like ice does to roads.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Also no good on siding (wood or vinyl) either. Ivy works into cracks. Plant growth traps water against the wood and the wood rots too.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

was also sad that it seems some restorations include removal of greenery. makes it look barren of life. a couple small trees would help lots

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ivy ALWAYS finds a way. It will grow back.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you have to really want Ivy to stay gone for it to actually stay gone.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I watched Facilities remove ivy from a brick wall across the street. They cleared land, added plants. 2 years later Ivy is back like before.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I tore it out down to the roots and concreted over it for a rabbit hutch. Hope the surviving ivy grows over the hutch eventually though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Systemic pesticides usually. Sometimes those don't even work.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gentrification at work, folks. Companies don't just move in randomly to crime ridden, broken down neighborhoods and fix shit up.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Umm. Yes they do. It's called real estate development moron.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 15

It's only done if there is significant interest in the area.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It's done if someone thinks they can make a profit. God, were you born yesterday.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

If there is profit in it then people/companies will renovate just about any city. Same happened here in OKC.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Companies make profit off of people with money. People who are poor and commit crimes do not have money. When people with money start...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

(2) moving in, the potential for profit exists, thus, renovations start happening, and are, of course, actively encouraged by the city.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0
