I am a sophomore in college and I was really struggling with the ability to pay for school and living. I put in for a pretty big scholarship and I actually got it which means I can stay and not have to worry about getting more jobs.

Get a job anyway and put the stipend into a CD. Let that free money work for you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I couldn't afford to make the drive to school. I ended up flunking. Oh well, though. I'm working now and I'll just try again.

Congrats. Be better than me. Do something with your life.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck, and do well.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Boom. Upvote for being awesome. Scholarships / full rides are neato, as well as not having the crippling debt.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Congrats!!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make the best of your time in school, this is a gift not to be wasted.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a full ride from my school, and stipends from the state. The school took the stipends to reduce their contribution.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Whoa! Great news, what precipitated this winning? Grades? Football? etc.?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Can't afford college". Funny and sad. Sympaties from Europe.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We also have "can't afford healthcare" here in the US of A.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"sigh" americans and their struggles... The rest of the world has free tuition. Please join the correct century. Its getting embarrassing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Congratulations! I had to drop out bc I couldn't keep my grades up while working full time to pay to live. FML. I have never graduated.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Spend the money on books and bank the rest, work for hpusing and food. Use the rest of the stipend money to pay off a portion of a (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Just finished my degree only bought one book. Often classmates share PDF's of the book needed for the class.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What degree? I've taken at least 4 classes so far where you submit homework through your copy of an online book.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Computer engineering, some software had to be bought like matlab with simulink and certain math/science courses required online homework.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Research your industry first before jumping straight into a Masters or PhD.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

In some Industries, having a Masters or higher without any experience makes you basically unemployable.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Better yet, let your employer pay for grad school.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

oh god at first I read this as "monthly steroids"

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

after you graduate do you have to serve in the army?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. I think Army ROTC requires 4 years active duty in exchange? I'm not sure, mine is 10 years.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you have to serve 10 years?!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aviation, my dude.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't waste the money you will now save...

8 years ago | Likes 523 Dislikes 3

Start paying off the student loans you've already taken. Seriously

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh I'll waste it... Waste it on my Roth IRA! Booyah!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because your scholarship will be taxable next year!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. So much this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Seriously. Even having a 1000 dollar buffer in your account makes a huge difference in stress level.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This. THIS. Plan ahead for the unexpected.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Get yourself a nice hamburger sandwich with cheese.

8 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

The word your searching for is cheeseburger.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thanks large Bob.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We get big bank lines of credit for our schooling and several classmates immediately bought brand new fancy cars.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice! At least they'll have a place to live

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hahaha

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Sweden its free . Congratz

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 11

Free? So no one has to pay in say, taxes?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

The taxes I'm going to pay in my lifetime could never cover how much my education will cost.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Granted, but everyone pitched in for "free" education. Thus it isn't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But most of the taxes are collected from companies. And paying for education is like putting money in the bank. I mean paying for everyones

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thanks for making the rest of us feel sad about life.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Not me. Free in Finland too. We're actually being paid for studying.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is free in a lot of countrys

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Again thanks for making the rest of us feel sad about life.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ours isn't free in England if it makes you feel any better.....

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But we do get a guaranteed interest free loan from the gov, that you only have to pay off when you start making over £30K.. happy medium?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well everyone has to pay for it through increased taxes, nothing is free in this world.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Well, the taxes we collect from individual citizens is nothing compared to companies.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, just through google, it looks like it can be anywhere from 30% at the absolute lowest, to the upwards of ~60% income taxes alone.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And in the US, the average middle class person pays roughly 30% after federal and state taxes. Then add in their own Healthcare 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or 0-1% like I have now. Never had over 15%

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

18k kr a year you'll jump to ~31% which looks like the baseline for most people.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sorry. I just checked mine and it seems to have risen to 3.5%

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Having ~0% I take it you are making less that 18k kr a year then which is ~2k for those in the US. But as soon as you make more than (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And having to save money their whole working life to pay off college, plus paying for daycare, and even 50-60% doesn't sound so bad. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Much of that is very situational, rates can change drastically from state to state. Someone who doesn't plan on going to a four-year 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but instead may plan to go to a trade school, the US tax system may have them better off in the long run.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Especially 'cause so many things are free or as close to free as possible.
