The trash bin eats people!

There's a warning sign no climbing into it on the bin. They ignore it. He is lucky he escaped with a dislocated shoulder and minor bleeding.

The bin will empty itself and this is how it looks below

This gif is not related to the rescue of the kid. Just to show that in order to get him out, someone needs to lift the bin up showed here.

I was hoping the kid was gonna fall out

@OP: these are pretty common in the EU, although only some are compactors. Most are just large bins, and some are pneumatic :D

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

we have similar systems in the netherlands, but every single one I saw doesn't exactly allow for people to enter in such a retarded manner

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Actually, it appears there IS a warning - the red graphic under the lid. Red means don't - at least in my part of the world.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think it's more or less universal but sometimes people don't read first. Like that time I stopped reading at contact solution, ignored

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The red tip and put a contact back in before the acid neutralized in 6 hours. I was screaming in ~1sec. Couldn't open my eye to take it out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After 20 min of rolling around in the hallway I finally got it out. Apparently it's a good cleaner if you follow the instructions. I didn't

You realize, EU is not a country and that's not even in a country which belongs to the EU. Switzerland, Zurich.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 8

To be fair, those type of trash bins also exist in the EU, some bigger towns in Germany recently installed similar ones.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Like saying USA when you mean Brazil. I mean they have guns in Brazil, too. Same thing, right?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

he means the European union... countries part of the EU share many things.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Switzerland is not part of the EU, still. Same as Brazil not beeing part of the United States of America, despite beeing in America.

In Finland the deep dumpsters are called Molok, which I think is a perfectly good name for a child eating earthworm monster

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

Moloch? I guess that explains the child sacrifice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moloch

@ssaarenp They are called that in Denmark as well

I think just don't climb into bins anywhere really

They literally smell like trash, and that's bad.

Reminds me of a Demitri Martin joke. "those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Okay. How about no one should throw stones?"

You need to throw the stones to skip them over water.

duh, they can't afford a lawsuit if it is being emptied and someone is looking on his/her phone and walks into the hole...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 10

That isn't the US. We all have insurance that covers that, "free" healthcare and reduced pay sick leave from work.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Not everywhere works like the U.S. where all safety measures are just lawsuit shields.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Or, and this might be a shocking concept to you, engineers are people and are as such aware of the need for basic safety precautions.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yep. I love it how everyone goes "to avoid lawsuits". Well guess what, not every system is just as safe as it needs to be to avoid lawsuits.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes it's called "common sense" not to risk workers/bystanders lifes regardeless of lawsuits.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not lawsuit, but basic job safety for the workers. Elevators could use these in the US. Source: guys fall down shafts and die still

TBH I was checking out a possible break in one night, empty unused building. I did consider checking out the incinerator

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stood in front for 5 min debating. I wanted to see the inside and there was no power so wasn't too worried. Common sense won unfortunately

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats how the Swiss folks sort out the dumb kids. You see, the country is rather tiny, so they don't want to waste the space on morons.

9 years ago | Likes 196 Dislikes 1

I think that's how it works over here.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Swiss here, that is totally true.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

why cant we do this in the uk

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

We need some of these in the US. Just add a trash compactor piece to the bottom so you're not having to empty them all the time.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thought it was fake until I saw the second gif... lol

9 years ago | Likes 1837 Dislikes 8

It doesn't seem like the second video is from that incident, just a demonstration of the bin.

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 1

There's probably a thousand safety measures

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 31

Why should there be? Common sense people don't get into trash bins. And there's also warning signs. 'Nuff done. Enjoy the show.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah, like warning signs not to climb in the bins.

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

In a perfect world, even the signs wouldn't be needed. People are friggin' idiots.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's called natural selection.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'd be interested to find out the statistics on how many bodies are found in trash cans like this.

9 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 2

I doubt it has ever happen because trash cans like that aren't common anywhere

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Whatcha got there? ...Beanie Baby

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's apparently a good practice to peek in a paper thrash to check for homeless people

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

paper thrash?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure on the proper word for them, but the bins for magazines/papers and so on

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Recycling bin? Or those ones where it shreds it? In that case it'd just be called a shredder.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy comment necro. Recycling bin indeed, we just call them paper trash bins. Or paper collection.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be honest, this is what happens when you're lucky. There are also bins which compress the garbage (altohough I dunno how strong they are)

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I would doubt that. There are too many safety concerns surely?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Now as I think of it: the opening is always very small. So dunno where the actual compression is going on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If the bet is between your weak-ass neck and an industrial size trash compactor, I know what I'm betting on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Switzerland isn't in the EU

9 years ago | Likes 686 Dislikes 22

Well, EU is both for Europe and for European Union.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Was looking for this comment, you win

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Europe was a collection of countries in the continent of Europe when I was a kid. Looks like it means countries controlled by Brussels now.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

It is, it is just not a part of it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well, here in Spain we use the same model for trash bins

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And they smell soooo bad

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

EU can also be Short for Europe, as the "European Union" is not a "place" , Switzerland is a part of Europe.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 13

EU is in no way short for Europe. And indeed, the term 'within the European Union' sets an outer perimeter of an area.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

'within the European Union' states that the country is a part of the union, it can still be a part of the continent.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"the EU" -> the Europe?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, but OP is clearly uneducated and thought EU was short for Europe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Are you referring to yourself, who just said that EU was short for Europe?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What would the Short for Europe be? EP?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In sweden we have a "central system" so all bins are conected and suck all the trash in a area to one place with vaccum.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That is awesome! Unfortunately a lot of people in England think the whole place is a bin so drop it where they want.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is England... The whole place may as well be

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As another Swede, I can confirm. We are the Jetsons.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

to be fair a lot of people use "eu" as kind of a synonym for europe..

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 11

Yes, we use it as a form of abbreviation.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

thats perfectly fine, but "the eu" wouldnt make any sense unless you're talking about the european union

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To be fair, in Europa America mostly means the u.s. of a. Especial "American". No one thinks of Canada, Peru or Chile.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

very true. its kind of a similar thing. In most context, when someone says american we correctly can deduce who they mean. same thing here.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, unfortunately it isn't. EU is the European Union. Europe is a continent.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 12

People say NA or SA for North America and South America, just like Europe is abbreviated EU.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I know. I live here. Just saying a lot of people mean europe when they say EU.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

So do I. Never heard it before. It's just not the same thing.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 17

Well, today you learnt something new. Congratulations.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

But it's part of the thing that says open boarders right? And isn't it part of the 'economic area' or whatever that means? I only American

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I only American also. We should still know these things.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Damn what a typo I made. I meant to say I'm only American. I was gonna say 'I'm only American don't hurt me' but I ran out of room

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know what you mean... the character constraints drive me crazy sometimes!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ish. There are 28 member states of the EU. 22 of them opted into Shengenland. 4 non-EU members entered into the agreement separately.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

And Norway is one of the countries who's not part of schengen but is part of the economic area right? I don't remember the others

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(the other "zone" is the European Free Trade Association, comprised of 4 members: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Switzerland didn't sign into the Shengen Ag't.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Norway is technically in it, but the ag't allows them to sometimes impose stricter borders, which they implemented after the Paris bombing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(so like, one city in Norway still needs a passport to get into. The rest of it is free travel)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because EU is the shortening for Europe and the EU is an association. It's not hard to confuse

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 29

How the hell am I getting downvoted for this? How is it possible to not know these incredibly basic things, why is this so hard for you?

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 7

Is the schengen zone the thing that says open boarders?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yup

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes. +fun fact: even tough switzerland is not in the EU they pay billions every year to the EU so they can also use schengen and free trade

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they pay billions for the privilege , then its not really free trade , is it ? lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well not free of course. But still more profitable than without paying it. The swiss are not stupid, especially when it comes to money ;)
