I got both of my dogs from a Craigslist equivalent. One was 2 years old and $150, the other 1 year old and free. Had to desex both too.
Most shelters in new Zealand advertise the dogs on our Craigslist equivalent anyway. Why do you feel it is bad?
I'm not sure about new Zealand, but I know this is true for the US and generally applies more to individuals than groups advertising.

(2) I'm sorry but as responsible pet owners hubby and I, didn't consider not bringing them with us.
(3) Heck, as we knew we'd be making the move at some point, the cost of moving them was one of the things we Investigated and considered
(4) before getting them…if we hadn't been prepared to pay for it, we wouldn't have gotten them in the first place.

I can confirm that, I got a hamster when I was 6 from an aunt, it "died" and I don't remember ever looking after it. Not sure if my 1/2

I think it's a good way to give a small amount of responsibility to your children. But agreed- you are the primary caregiver.

I think the idea is more that a toddler/young child can't actually take 100% responsibility of a pet re: feeding, walking, care etc

Yes, but it has to at a certain age, no 5year old is going to pay attention to a pet for longer than a month until she/he get bored with it.
