Step 1: Start
Based on this post (http://imgur.com/gallery/wCi7TNk), a bunch of people asked for tips on getting started into voice acting. Now, I'm pretty new to the whole thing but happy to share some advice I've been given and the steps I took to start my own path. (EDIT: I'm no expert and there are tons of other resources out there for those who really want to learn - these are just based on my own experiences so please take them as such)
I'm 33 - I spent many years wanting to be a voice actor, and never doing a single thing about it. I always thought I'd be good at it but didn't know where to even start. At 30 I started taking improv classes as a creative outlet and it's one of the first things I will vouch for in terms of helping with voice acting. It has taught me how to be spontaneous and fun with my character choices, and how to switch things up on the fly. I highly recommend trying out some improv classes if you have access.
One day, during a bad depressive episode, I finally decided to start asking around. I know a lot of performers who were all very generous with advice and pointed me towards the lady who would become my voice coach. (If you want some suggestions, I recommend Sunday Muse or Melissa Altro who both offer remote sessions but there are many more!)
I can't stress enough how much having a voice coach helps. I thought I was good at voices, but it's so much more than that. It's sustaining, and technique, and placement, and breath, and saliva amounts. Many coaches will do skype sessions so even if you aren't in a city, don't let that stop you! Get a coach!!!
For those who say "well, it's too expensive so I guess I can't" - I worked 3 jobs during this time and cut a lot of expenses because this is something that was super important to me. It's not easy to chase what you want but it is possible.
Step 2: Failing sucks but it's ok!
It was pretty disheartening when I QUICKLY realized how hard it was. The first few coaching sessions I felt like an idiot. But don't give up. A lot of it feels weird and I definitely had a sore throat for weeks when I started because I had never used my vocal chords that way before. That's okay! Just keep at it!
Step 3: Practice practice practice
Listen to voices on the radio and in cartoons you like and now that you have some tools, try and pick out the little things they are doing. Find scripts and try some of your own voices on that text. Highlight the parts where you might want to add in effects, or different pacing. Read it happy, or sad, or like someone is trying to tickle your butt. They will all teach you different voices you can access.
Step 4: Demos and Agents
My coach worked with me to help write copy and with creating original characters for my demo. From what I know, most demos are 4-5 characters and you want to show a wide range (you can hear mine here: https://soundcloud.com/stephanie-malek/animation-demo) - I highly recommend you don't cheap out on this and that you work with a producer who is experienced in animation demos. You can get hired straight off your demo, and a bad one can keep you from getting work even if your voices are great.
For agents, look up agencies near you, and check their websites if they represent voice work. Many agencies will have demo submission information on their website. Ask around to your friends if anyone knows any agencies and can put in a good word for you (that helped me get mine!). ANY AGENT WHO ASKS YOU FOR MONEY IS NOT A GOOD AGENT. Don't do it. Keep shopping until you meet with someone who feels right for you.
Step 5: Auditions
These are where I just got to in this process. I've only been to two - one commercial and one animation. These are very nervewracking and I wish I had some tips for this other than drink lots of water, and spend lots of time practicing the different voices.
When you get in there, listen to their feedback and incorporate it. They want to see that, on top of having a good voice, they will be able to work with you and direct you easily!
I hope this helped a little! Keep at it! Follow your dreams! EDIT: Watch "I Know That Voice"!
mybliss
And still for the big animated movies they hire hollywood actors for the voice acting. Always hated that fact.
smileyhat
I have no acting experience at all, but plan on starting a radio drama thing and it'd be nice to act in my own stuff. Thanks for this.
VegetaWasAPrisonBitch
I'd love to be a voice actor, or at least do dramatic readings of bad fanfiction. Probably in the voices of TFS characters. I'm good at them

OP Delivered!!!
wolfshades
HUGE thumbs on the improv advice. Improv can be addicting actually. I've been to countless classes & am looking forward to more.
chompychompy
Oh god it's a cult. I don't know how else to explain it. I'm so hooked.
ktheman
I do announcing work for a nationally franchised improv group so your advice seems really pertinent to me! I've always dreamt of doing VO!
chompychompy
i honestly couldn't have even thought of this without having improv under my belt! That stuff changes lives!
Revocane
Ask around to your friends if anyone knows any agencies and can put in a good word for you? Pfft. Sure I have these things called 'friends'.

You have us ;)
yapyapblahblahdribbledribbledribble
Dee Bradley Baker, who is a voice GOD!!, also has a helpful site for exactly this: http://iwanttobeavoiceactor.com/
CeilingOctopus
I've always thought about becoming a voice actor. I can mimic most voices I hear, being a Ventriloquist's son and all.

Step 1: Know People Step 2: Have enough money to pay for a vocal coach Step 3???? Step 4: Profit
chompychompy
Step 2 = have 3 jobs to pay for vocal coach. Step 3 = cry all the time because you have no life, Step 4 = No profit yet but hopefully soon!
roaringstar4
There are many vocal techniques. I am trained in the Linklater technique which is an offshoot of the Alexander Movement method.
Ophiukus
Someone linked me here and I had to reply... I wish you all the very best of luck! You've got this!
nosurecure
This is amazing. I have stage fright but am a straight goofball, I'm totally looking in to this!
YOUDONMESSEDUPAARON
Grew up in the 90s and loved the heck out of Saturday morning cartoons. Your Soundcloud demo was spot on! Let me know if you get and gigs!
IFudgedUpAgain
My siblings are very good at voice manipulation, they can voice almost all the characters both anime, cartoons and RL. I cant even do Irish.
Yeee5
Quick someone tag Peter Dinklage.
MrRoybert
Time is running out. Might as well tag Nolan North too.
babyskin
As an 18 year old trying to be a stuntman but stuck from fear, this really helped. I thank you very sir and I hope for the best for you!
JantherCan
Have you ever seen "instructions not included"? :)
babyskin
The Spanish movie about the guy who his kid is dropped off at his door?
JantherCan
Yeah. The guy is a stunt actor in the story. Some scenes show the stunt filming process. Idk if they're realistic but it was entertaining :)
babyskin
I guess I'll have to watch the movie again. Thanks :)
chokemewhileifinish
Wow. I really needed to see this post . I have wanted to get into this forever and I have/had no clue where to start. Thank you !
Parsonians
My dream for the last 15 years has been to become a voice actor, but bills and adulting have all but snuffed out that dream. Ah well
InboxMeYourBunnyRabbits
Just listened to your demo, you are Amazing!!! You have an astounding variety in your voices! I am blown away!
Bakersquare
Damn you're good
thisistheonlycommentiwillevermake
I can't believe this is the only comment like this, that demo was super impressive!
chompychompy
I really appreciate it! Thank you for listening to it!
chompychompy
Thank you so much!
tyaak
your demo sounds like every person is different! :D
chompychompy
Thanks! It was pretty fun to come up with the characters though hard to try and made them unique! I just wanted to be a teenage boy.
DrJohnnyZoidberg
Thank you @chompychompy I really feel like this is what I want to do. But not knowing what to do and the fear of failing were my excuses.
chompychompy
Yup! Mine too for a long time but then I finally said "well, I'm the furthest I'll ever be from this so I've already failed by not trying"
fluder
There's a great documentary about this called 'I Know That Voice' made by the guy who voices Bender and Jake the Dog
quietrage
Going to meet him at Sacanime convention next week!
chompychompy
That documentary is great! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this stuff!
kingofbass40
Also Flexo and Url, his name is John Dimaggio
onepunchwoman
Shut up baby, I know it.
Stoobers
Commenting for later
ThePikaPiPi
He also voices Marcus Fenix if I remember right. I'm not that committed to google it, however.
bandito1578
And the sergeant dude from Princess Mononoke, and a robot guy from Destiny...he's in a TON of stuff!
nagchampa
I'm 30 now, it's nice to know it's not to late to start something new.
chompychompy
Not too late at all! You still have tons of time!
itstoughbutitsgood
+1 for all the adventure time corresponding gifs
badassmuthawhodonttakenocrapoffanobody
I just started watching this with my son... awesome show :D
Jiryn
This has been my dream since I was a teenager, I'm 35 now but nervous after seeing some of the things my idols go through.
Jiryn
So I do blogs, rants and videos trying to gain personal experience and better my craft. Thank you for this post man!
fiera
I got started doing VO when I was in my early 30s. Never too late to start! You don't even need to do 'voices' to make a living at it.
Jiryn
Thank you, but as I told the OP, it's personal demons and experiences which is really keeping from following my dream.
fiera
I would suggest anyone looking for an agent makes sure they are a SAG-AFTRA agency, though.
Jiryn
SAG-AFTRA?
fiera
Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, it's the union for performers. If they're union they're legit.
Jiryn
I always thought ADV, Funimation and Blue Ocean would/were be legit
chompychompy
Like what stuff? I'm also in my 30s but that's part of the beauty of voice vs. screen acting - you can keep your voice strong for years!
Jiryn
I remember behind the voice and many other things. I've also watched Crispin Freeman's vlogs about how to become a voice actor.
Jiryn
Also, "I Know that voice" spoke about some of the problems too.
Jiryn
Stuff like being locked in an air tight, non air-conditioned booth for hours. Little to no breaks (I'm a recovering diabetic) etc.
fiera
Don't worry about it, surprisingly some studios aren't enclosed like that at all. They're big rooms with lots of open space.
nohman64
This is cool. I enjoy imitating voices but I'm very much a beginner. It might sound lame but I do think I have potential. Nice post.
chompychompy
I was the same way a year ago. Now I'm nowhere near a Tara Strong, or a Rob Paulsen but they started somewhere too!
sanitypotion
I was just wondering, is there any place for voice actors who only have one voice? Because I'm kind of limited to low bass range.
chompychompy
I have no idea, but maybe speak to a vocal coach if you are interested in expanding your range?
zorlop
Respect. I really want to be a voice actor but I don't have a wide range of voices maybe 1 - 2 and can't stay in character for too long.
zorlop
Because it hurts my voice so I give you props voice acting is a dream job of mine
chompychompy
a coach can help you find new voices by teaching you different techniques, such as using different parts of your body to create unique sound
zorlop
thanks op maybe one day but for now i will probably pursue another goal of completing college and getting a bachelor degree :D
chompychompy
For sure! Those things are super important too. I have a full time job that covers me so I can do this stuff!
beces1996

danielsdesk
it says you can say who referred you when you register; did you want to give your username for referral credit?
beces1996
No, I am ok thankyou though :) if you ever have any questions about the voice over world feel free to shoot me a PM!
danielsdesk
I may take you up on that!
dellyswe
Yo, no, not for people who want to get serious. Lately it's pure hobbyist stuff. Fandubs, you know? And it's dying to boot.
beces1996
Well i can say, there are a bit of professional projects on there, and even than the whole point was its good for people JUST starting out
dellyswe
There's really no good VAing hubs anymore. It really sucks for us non-Americans who want to do animation/games.
beces1996
There's a original video section on VAA there is ALWAYS games and such. I can see a bunch right now
dellyswe
Which is the only section that's really active anymore - and compared to 3 or so years ago, it's a ghost town.
dellyswe
But why am I saying these things? I want that poor site to pick up again. All the talent left and now it's just a shadow.
NOTAlexJones
I just moved to Seattle, am staying with a friend. No job, but came up here chasing my dream to be a voice actor, this was inspiring, thx!

Keep at it! I hadn't heard a peep from my agent for a few months but then got this audition notice and flipped! Feels like a step forward!

Is Seattle a place for voice acting? I could imagine with all the gaming companies around here it would work.
standbygo
Yeah. Lots of famous voice actors live here. Jen Taylor (Cortana), Ellen McLain (Glados), and John Patrick Lowrie (Sniper in TF2).
floatlikeabutterfry
Makes sense, Microsoft and Valve are up here after all.
standbygo
Bungie too.
NOTAlexJones
I don't know if it is, but that was the thought process I went through. I'm going to try to set up an in-house studio when I get some money
AWanderingFlame
If that ever gets going and you ever need any extras who can work remotely, I would be happy to audition (and work for free)
danielsdesk
did you have some equipment setup in mind already for your studio?
NOTAlexJones
My bro is getting me a mic, stand and program for editing. Some foam packing materials on cardboard for sound reduc.&a screen for poppin
NOTAlexJones
Already have a computer, so that's a plus.
