With all the HOA insanity, people using the organizations to bully others so they can feel big etc. I'm honestly a bit surprised at the lack of people snapping and going Heemeyer on the board. Granted the homeowner demographic tends to have a lot to lose so strong disincentive for doing stuff, but still.

If you're interested in fighting it, they use a lot of vague language when it comes to the standards. Yes, they overwhelm you with all the types of work you are responsible for, but it doesn't say what the "correct" look is (Trimmed to 4", Edged to a 1" gap, Uniformly painted, etc.). Judges tend to rule against vague regulations. Of course, an actual lawyer would offer better advice, but from the looks of it, it might be worth talking to one.

Whoever dreamed up HOAs would probably feel right at home wearing an ICE uniform. Sheer insanity to own your own property, but be beholden to some stuck-up spinster or Karen acolyte. Without recourse, without appeal, without the ability/right to opt-out. Sorry for your woes buddy, this will be a bitter lesson to learn.

You're not far off. HOAs have an origin in racist neighborhoods setting up rules that would exclude minorities, former slaves, etc... They were designed to give control over properties they didn't own and apply the rules at a whim. It is not by accident that this sort of thing happens all the time.

Nah I'm in a deeply blue state and they have them here too. They are NIMBY people who will justify shitty behavior by saying they are "protecting property values" but really they just don't want poor people around. That unfortunately is an attitude that some Democrats demostrate as well. They want to help the poor, just not around them.

In an ideal world, everyone could shop around for an ideal house, but most people are very limited by money and distance from their job. If OP's choice was between "own house with HOA" and "pay an increasingly large amount of money to landlords every month forever" I could see why they chose the former

I get that but this place is 20 min from work and I got it in 2020 for just 175k total at a %2.875 interest rate.
