They basically did this in WWII, got the bright idea to put everyone over a certain age in a single battalion to see how they performed versus the younger soldiers. They blew the doors off the kids. So the US Army, in it's infinite wisdom... never deployed them until the very end of the war. Instead, they basically tortured them, using them to test equipment in severe conditions, and more. So, I don't think this is gonna help cause the Army brass are dumb.

There will be tiered boot camp standards to accommodate physical differences due to age. If there is a draft no one but the most extremely incompetent and unfit will fail bootcamp. They will need bodies.

It's my opinion that instituting a draft in America will be the last straw for the nation. That is why they are hoping to get enough desperate people to sign up.
Tank the economy, make it difficult to find housing, job, food, etc. Join up and immediately get all three. It's worked throughout history.

I would argue that after Vietnam they learn the draft causes people to hate the war more. We are more forgiving when it is a voluntary military. But this administration doesn't care when the people are upset. But that is why they never institutided a draft during Iraq or Afghanistan. Draft hurts the poor more than the rich in obvious ways. But a voluntary force makes it seem like they want to be there.

Rangel’s point was that when the military burden is spread throughout society instead of concentrated in - for example - the poor or military families, you get get greater civil engagement for a variety of reasons. It’s a generational kind of thing, and forces people who never would meet, together. Whether it’s appropriate and a good idea isn’t quite the same question.
