Links to the software in the descriptions!
It's all tested and safe!

4K Video Downloader

Downloads YouTube Videos exactly how you want them!

http://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader

(limitations of the free version: you can only download playlists or channels if they have less than 25 videos - single video's always work - small banner in the app window itself)

It's one of the few ways to still download 1080p video's from YouTube

It even downloads MP3's without having to download the whole video to save you a huge amount of bandwidth!

Everything

Lightning fast search through all your files! Lost a file and can't find it with Windows' built-in search? Everything searches instantly through all your file names and only takes a few seconds to index at first start.

http://www.voidtools.com/

f.lux

Can't sleep after a long night of Imgur? Hate the blinding brightness of your display at night?

f.lux solves it! You set your location and f.lux makes your display a tinge more yellow after sunset to match your indoor lighting. You don't notice it after a minute and it makes for a much more relaxing experience so you can LNI without straining your eyes.

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema

The best video player there is for Windows, without contest. You can make subtitles look exactly how you like (black outline!), it has the highest playback quality and uses the least processing power of all video players. Keeps your fans quiet and saves battery power!

http://mpc-hc.org/ (get 32bit, even on 64bit systems)

(It's a fair bit better than VLC. It's faster, you'll get better contrast and it plays just as many video formats, if not more.)

MPC-HC even downloads subtitles for you!

Just start playing your video, hit D (keyboard shortcut) and select the right subtitle! That's how simple it is!

Switching between subtitles and audio tracks is done by right-clicking on the video.

TreeSize Free

Something ate all your disk space and you can't find what?
TreeSize Free gives you a very easy overview of where your gigantic files are.

http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Paint.net

Need to make some quick edits, resizes, adjustments, ... Don't bother with Photoshop or Gimp, Paint.net is really fast and can already do quite a bit. One thing it doesn't do is text outlines though, sorry for that...

http://www.getpaint.net/
Direct download link (don't be fooled by the ads on the site): http://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html (click the blue link on the right).

Sublime Text

Notepad on steroids. I personally use it for almost everything, including PHP development. It's so fast even notepad starts feeling slow.

You can select and edit multiple places at a time, drag folders in to get a built-in file browser, split it into two views, ... You have to try it to see how great it is!

http://www.sublimetext.com/

Shotty

Want to shoot kick-ass screenshots like the ones in this album? Shotty is what you need! After install it it you can do CTRL+PrintScreen to take a screenshot of the current window with the fancy window borders! It highlights, makes red boxes and can even directly upload to Imgur!

http://shotty.devs-on.net/

Fancy window borders don't work for all windows, but you can always screenshot a region or the full screen and then crop it out right within Shotty.

f.lux is such a handy program i honestly don't know what i did without it...

+1 for Warpaint

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love Warpaint.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I get insomnia quite badly and half the reason was because of how bright my laptop was, my body thought it was day, thank fuck for flux!

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah I had the same issue, since f.lux on a really yellow setting I've slept so much better!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

BIG thank you for this program! My eyes thank you! My sleep! My sanity! 20 minutes in, I can feel the difference.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here! I have it constantly on, just mildly during the day and I have it full power at night and don't notice, it's so nice on the eyes!

Upvotes for Warpaintfans!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For Media Player Classic, why should I get the 32 bit version, even if I'm running 64 bit?

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are some plugins that only work with the 32b version. There's little performance difference, so better play it safe.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

DIDNEY WORL!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you haven't listened to Warpaint please do so now! Such beautiful music.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a developper I really enjoy Sublim text ( thanks to my gf) And .. WARPAINT !!! I love these girls so much !

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I never knew you could dl subs in MPC-hc even though ive been using it for years! This is awesome.

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Hear hear! The one shortcut aside from pgup/pgdn and space I know is B, which I hit by accident instead of space one time. :E

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I only found out a few weeks ago after years of using it :P

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

so ive been using gom for many years. is that MPC better and easier to use?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MPC-HC has a very basic UI but I'm 100% confident it's the best in quality and efficiency!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't know how to turn off the subtitles in MPC, which is why I still use VLC

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Upvoting because Warpaint!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Uhhh Anything like these for MAC users?

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

A lot of these have OS X ports.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Y'all rock.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F.lux is available for mac!

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

thank you so much for "everything"! i lost a file on my comp last year and because of that, i was able to find it and open it! thank you <3

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's amazing indeed! So fast!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yay! Sublime Text!

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You, sir, have excellent taste in TV shows.

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

How the hell does Dead Like Me take up 59 GB though?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like high definition video :P It's from a Russian site, includes audio tracks in four languages but it's the only good one I could find.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coupling cinched it for me.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I love Jane. And Jake the Snake.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think of it as Friends only way better because of the british humour. Pity they didn't make more seasons.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah it's much better, feels less fake. The last season wasn't very good though, no Jeff and too much about Sally and Patrick.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And Jack Davenport/Steve has a really great voice!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love you. DOWNLOAD ALL THE THINGS!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sublime Text is worth the license fee, too, if you want to support the developer. I've never been so happy with a text editor.

12 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Agreed. So happy to see that on here. Love it.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sublime Text2 + ftp plugin is the best duo for me at least

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sublime text ftw!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I plan on buying it as soon as I start working. It's a bit hefty as a student but I really like it.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

any idea how it compares to notepad++? because I use that now and i'm pretty happy

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's really no comparison IMHO - Notepad++, Programmer's notepad, doesn't matter. All of them are second-best next to Sublime :D

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get your employer to pay for it ;)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(I actually managed to get my employer to pay for Sublime, by the way, just a few years after this post!)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can be sure I'll try ;)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

www.Clipconverter.cc is a thousand times better and you don't have to to download anything, you can even pick specific times in the video!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and you can download in different formats including just audio, quality up to 320 kbps for audio.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, YouTube doesn't offer those. There's no point in converting lower-bitrate audio to higher bitrates, bigger file for the same quality.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh and another program I'd suggest would be spacemonger, has a trial period just like winrar. Visually shows you how you're usign your hdd.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hm. Looks pretty good! Even though I prefer a small native tool over a web service. Thanks for the hint though, definitely saving this!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and no limitations, download from any channel anytime.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't vouch for all of these but TreeSize is really useful (and Paint.NET is pretty much free Photoshop; I actually prefer its GUI).

12 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 3

Having used Photoshop for years I can't honestly say I've Ever found something free that'd replace it-That said Paint.net=free alternative

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don't think Paint.net is trying to replace Photoshop. But for people who just need to do a few simple things, it's SO much easier.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, even GIMP is a really poor replacement. As much as I hate Adobe, there is no way to get around photoshop for advanced stuff.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I prefer WinDirStat

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I love how WinDirStat shows me just where all the biggest files are, and also allows me to use it in network shares.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have made some OC with Paint.NET that has been shared here (some before I ever had an account) and then been reshared by others even! :)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I like GIMP better

12 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 4

I like pixlr.com/editor (online editor, no download).

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Each to their own :)

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I switch around between GIMP, Photoshop and Paint.net depending on what I need. There are some fantastic things in GIMP, like Color to Alpha

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

GIMP is fun to use, and the plugins for it are awesome! Here, have a fractal flame I made in GIMP: http://imgur.com/X6aikoX

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah? I can do a circle with gimp! !

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gimp fractales flames generator is very cool, I use it often. Have a thing i am working on using only GIMP :

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah I can do fractals too

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's a master piece!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I use GIMP and Inkscape together. They don't always play together well, but they're both really handy.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

<3 PDN.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Paint.net comes nowhere close to Photoshop.

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I stopped using photoshop around version 7 when paint.net started getting addon support from moders for additional features, all free too.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

For casual use it's ok... I'm not a graphic designer.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I'm playing around with Paint.Net in Linux, and it's pretty cool. Not sure I'll be giving up the gimp, but it'll be nice for quick things.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's very easy to tell someone has no idea when they're talking about when they say Paint.net is similar to Photoshop.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'm not saying that they're on par on a professional level. Paint.NET is bloody useful for a free program.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

'pretty much free Photoshop' means Paint.Net == Photoshop.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

For a teenager with a casual interest in photo manipulation who doesn't have $198 spare, it suffices. Photoshop is far more powerful/capable

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For a teenager with a casual interest in photo manipulation should just pirate the damn software, like every other teenager.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You mean a free, LEGAL, program.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hahah, precisely.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only thing I don't like about paint.net is the stupid things it tries to download with it, pay attention to the checkboxes whewn downloading

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hm. I tried it out before creating this guide and it was clean? You need to make sure to get the clean one from the original site though.

Is that what you do in Photoshop? I know it has some really useful text tools.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, I've got to try that! I usually just use Photoshop CS6 myself though, we get it through school.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

there are plugins for basically everything with PDN, there is also one for text lineout

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That's not going to line it up right.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You forgot the best one of all. Windows Snip tool.

12 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 4

All jokes aside, he really did forget 7-Zip or Winrar. Use 7-zip DAILY.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

puush is the best fast-screen cap. allows you to do more than just select a region and it isn't ad-filled like gyazo

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I use that! Cheers

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, well, things already included in Windows weren't really what I'm aiming for :P In the end Shotty does the same (the Region thing) +more!

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Soluto is pretty useful too. It allows you to manage multiple computers from the cloud, speed up boot times, and gives you maintenance tips

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh cool, I'll look into it. Might be cool to manage my family's PC's so they stop fucking up things :P

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure how in depth you can get, but it's designed for IT departments of companies

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their site seems to have some issues atm :(

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally, I'm using puush for my screenshotting purposes. Sure, you need a free account, but it's really streamlined and easy to use.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Winmerge is another super useful one. Lets you compare text files and see where they are different. Very nice for modding.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've always used diffchecker,com, didn't know alternatives.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Indeed! I use a Sublime plugin for it. I have lots more tools but kept it not-too-techy here. Maybe I should do one for nerds too!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One for computer maintenance too. Stuff like CCleaner, Defraggler, and Malwarebytes.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eeee. Ccleaner and defrag tools aren't really needed nowadays (Windows 7 and up). Don't rust Ccleaner and Windows defrags automatically!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is SublimeText better than Notepad++? Cause that's usually what I use

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I personally really think it is. Great syntax highlighting, really fast and I love the colour scheme. Give it a try!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just opened it and agreeing on that. Especially with the automatic recognition of HTML tags and indentation. Any chance it has page preview?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, but there's a plugin that adds a shortcut to open it in the browser afaik. https://sublime.wbond.net/installation (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After installing the View In Browser package you can hit CTRL+ALT+V to open it in browser (or use the command form the panel). (3/3)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Follow those instructions. Then hit CTRL+SHIFT+P to open the command panel > "Install package" > View in browser. (2/3)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Flux is amazing, honestly i don't know how i lived without before :[

12 years ago | Likes 284 Dislikes 2

I do photography and can't handle this program changing my display colors. Even if you can turn it off, it trains your eyes.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah when I'm working in Lightroom I need to get accustomed to the change too. It's a matter of priorities... It's great for coding.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use Gunnars. But only because I like looking a nerd

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Gunnars > Flux in my opinion.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eh, my Gunnars are nice, but sometimes they hurt my head after a while. Flux is nice because you don't have to wear anything.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea I'm on a Mac and I just calibrated my screen so it's always that orangish tint. Works really well for photo editing!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Changed my life too! A thousand thanks to the OP!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What if all the lights in our house are white CFLs? (true. not the yellowish ones, the white ones.) Wat do I do pleaz?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure that's completely irrelevant.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

? why?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because Flux will still work. I don't know why your lights would even be a problem.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The description was that flux can increase the color temperature of your monitor at night to match the incandescent lighting in your house.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Flux is as great as it is irritating

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Make sure you have an hour transition instead of the 30 sec one.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What if all the lights in our house are white CFLs? (true. not the yellowish ones, the white ones.) Wat do I do pleaz?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just downloaded it... I hope it's as good as everyone says!

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

what is Flux?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

f.lux : it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be aware, flux will feel VERY weird at first use. Given some time, you'll come to get used to it. It settled in for me after 2-4h.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i thought it was the greatest thing and i kept hitting preview 24 hours like a billion times for 2 days. needless to say i was easily amused

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wish I understood why people are so into this! I tried it for several weeks and never got used to it; everything just looked off and dim.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's more for health reasons, 'blue' light prevents the release of your sleep hormone, melatonin. Try it for a week or two...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The reason i like it is b/c when i use my laptop at night with no lights on it seems to make it easier to sleep after words since using flux

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmm. Maybe I just don't have the problem it solves. The biggest factor preventing me from sleeping is not getting off the damn internet. :P

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well i've the blue tint makes it harder and it strains my eyes, but with flux it makes it easier

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry, didn't parse that. Come again?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do not recommend if you have poor eyesight. I used to use it and it strained like a mofo, but thats just my experience.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

mm i guess it depends on the eyesight b/c i wear contacts/glasses and i like it. but i'm sorry it didn't work for you :/ <3

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My fiance and I quit using it for the same reason.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Really? My experience has been the opposite!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here. When I switch it back to regular light at night, it burns my eyeballs.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This post and this comment are finally convincing me to give it a try. Personally I've disliked the way it looks every time I've seen it.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's great after you get used to it and use a slow transition. I didn't even notice it after the first day.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah when i first saw what it did i shook my head. Then i tried it and i like it. It's easier on the eyes when i lay in bed with my laptop.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's what I'm thinking, I'll probably just use it on my laptop, and maybe my phone. I do too much colour-sensitive stuff on my desktop. :p

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It took me a few days to get used to it (I had to set it to fluorescent lighting) and now I don't even notice it doing its thing.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you for that, know my eyes feel better

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah the incandescent setting is really, really pink and gave me an eyeball headache. Fluorescent is nice though!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Android app version is called Twilight. Perfect for MLNI (mobile LNI). Use it all the time, don't even notice it's on and I CAN SLEEEEEEEEEP

12 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I use Lux on my androids

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're apparently working on an actual Android version of f.lux. I've heard Twilight just adds a color filter instead of lowering the temp.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It does and it bothers the stew out of me. I can't wait for a working one (it'll require Root access), so I can read books on my tablet.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's practically all f.lux is doing anyway.....you can change all the settings on twilight to fit your desire

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well i don't have a smart phone but i'm glad there is one for Android :) i will have to remember this for my friends who have them.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you! This is great and much much better than before, you are awesome!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

thank youuuuu! :D glad I have been able to help somebody :3

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is there an Iphone version?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

f.lux, but only if you jailbreak.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

only for rooted iPhones

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"rooted iPhones" wtf. I meant jailbroken iPhones. Jalibroken. Not rooted. That's for the ANDROID MASTER RACE *cough*splutter*

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a game designer, sublime text is super helpful for coding . +1

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

I use Komodo Edit IDE for my programming class... and Notepad++ at home.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Serious question: why aren't you using a full IDE?

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Personally I think ides make devs less knowledgeable. So many java devs can't even compile their code without an ide...

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This technically is an IDE. Also; an IDE doesn't really help much. I personally use notepad++ for all my code. :)

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I just made that comment that I prefer notepad++.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

+1 for notepad ++ but sublime is better.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

notepad++ is better than all. Unless sublime can be inverted. I dislike the colours a lot..

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a game developer, I agree with rdrdtheta's question....why aren't you using a full IDE that will help your development.

Based on what I'm reading here, I don't think very many of these developers have tried using a real IDE. I think they're either green (1/2)

I'm green. I'm not a developer, simply a designer. I get my hands dirty to prototype but my devs do all the heavy lifting

or haven't had the time to explore other options. Notepad++, sublime, vim, etc are all cool for quick edits. But not for long term use.(2/2)

Once you work with a language for a while you learn its ins and outs and a clunky IDE isn't all to necessary. (1/2)

For PHP I preferred Sublime because without type hinting IDE's aren't very useful for PHP. Sublime's features outweigh the loss of IDE stuff

It appears to me that Sublime isn't actually free.... Is it really $70 better than notepad++?

Well, it's pretty much free. You get a single nag every few hours, that's it. I think it's really fantastic.

Question: What is the best way to learn coding? I've used code academy for HTML/CSS, JAVASCRIPT, and PYTHON. Looking for more learning tools

Definitely go ALL the way through Codeacademy, I had been programming Python for a while but still learned new stuff through the course.

Thanks, this helps a lot.

Hm. I'm actually studying it. The best way is just trying stuff out and asking "why" all the time. It doesn't count if you don't know why.

I'm enrolled in college for software engineering but because I'm doing it while in the military it's going really slow and I'm not to the1/2

coding classes or any of the computer classes yet. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can prior to getting there. 2/2
