I've been in -40°C walk-in freezers and that's more than cold enough for me. Over 30°C colder than that is just bonkers.

Doesn't that sunrise take days to finish?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember hearing years and years ago that there's a sauna at South Pole Station and they have a thing called "The 200 Degree Club" where they sit in the sauna for a while when the outside temperature is 200 degrees colder than the temp of the sauna, then once they're sufficiently hotted up they very quickly run outside and do a lap around the post marking the Pole. Anyone know if that's actually true? This is a thing I've "known" for decades and don't know how to fact check it.

So this would be from late September/early October last year?

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Most likely sometime in August. The sun rises above the horizon on September 21st at the south pole, but twilight like this occurs when the sun is below the horizon still, and starts a month or two before the official sunrise.

Still great video, but it's not a new video. Antarctica is actually in winter and darkness right now.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

So you're telling me this video was filmed at... another time?!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least you don’t have to look at any stupid CyberTrucks while you’re down there.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is probably from last year, the next dawn on the south pole will be in september, on the equinox. Do go check out this guys youtube though (joespinestheglobe, in the corner there), he just put up a video of scuba diving off of costa rica and its great

I remember visiting the Netherlands in the summer and being rather unused to the fact that the sky stayed relatively bright all the way up to midnight.

You are 3 months late...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Early.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember my first morning down there.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love night time, so I always thought living in a place where this happens would be cool, but I'm not sure about 6 months of it. Plus the opposite where it's all sun all the time sounds like he'll. I went to Stockholm in the summer, that was bad enough

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is it safe to breathe such cold air? Genuine question.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was expecting a fright from 30 days of night type vampire.

North pole.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

At the north pole it is generally daytime 24/7 from March to September. It's called midnight sun. I know the meme you mean, but they would have to switch poles regularly.

The "tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" line tickles the minor Shakespeare nerd in me every time.

I like how the movie is spoiled if you speak Norwegian. Imagine going in there blind and hearing that, no subtitles translating it and thinking, "Jeg tror ikke jeg skal vite dette."

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well they had mornings, just really dark mornings until now.

2 years ago | Likes 208 Dislikes 4

What is a morning

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The time between midnight and noon.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s mid winter at South Pole now. Sun will rise in about 3 months from now.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

It's not really. Depending on where this is, it can go from solid night to solid day within only a month of overlap. This video is old. Assuming this is mcmurdo, the sun won't come up again until August 19th for 1 and a half hours.

They'll be in transition until October 22 when the sun will not set again until next February.

"Dark Morning" sounds like a great emo band name.

Dark Mourning, goth rock

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some definitions of morning are from sunrise until noon so technically with that definition they’ll only have one morning the day the sun rises.

4) That door said No Exit

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Technically the other door says no exit so they used the correct one.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3)Pretty sure it's earth

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This low on the morning right now it's Jupiter. Venus and Mercury are still almost behind the sun so not visible.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I don't think this is a current thing happening right now. We're right in the middle of nightless nights up here near the north pole, so by my reckoning south pole won't be seeing the sun any time soon.

1) but it's a Dry cold.

Squeak squeak

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if the temps weren't listed you can tell by the squeak of the snow that it's damn cold.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

it's -97 degrees, it doesn't matter if it's wet or dry, it's fucking cold as shit

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

True, most people don't think of it, but it is technically a Desert

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's also a thin air cold. They have issues cooling computers and stuff there as the airflow doesn't move as much energy.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't the air density be greater due to the cooler temps?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Water is also very good at absorbing heat energy. Even if it's a gas, the lack of water in the air means the air's heat capacity is lower. Added with the high elevation

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The elevation is 2,835m

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At that temp it's pretty unlikely to be wet

2 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

but it's a hard wet

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's why Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth.
