This aquarium is one with the ocean

Do not tap for sound.

FP Edit: I usually don't do these, but a lot of y'all seem to be wasting your time complaining that OCTOPUSES is wrong and it should be OCTOPI. Sit your ass down and listen. OCTOPUSES is how the word octopus is pluralized in English - we add "es" to the end of everything, probably for a valid reason I'm not going to Google right now. OCTOPI is an attempt to simplify English and make it sound more like Latin. But the word OCTOPUS is not Latin. It's actually Greek, which means the plural would be OCTOPODES - but that's not 'podes' like 'toads', but 'oc-top-o-dees'. But when a word enters the English language, it becomes English, so English pluralization is correct. IN CONCLUSION... OCTOPUSES IS THE CORRECT PLURAL OF OCTOPUS. You can use octopi, but it's Latin and wrong. And you can use octopodes, but that's Greek. And you're speaking English. Source: Merriam Fucking Webster. So stop arguing.

lol. nice grammar research, OP! +1

Tapped for sound.. dont tell me how to live my life!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Thanks Sigourney!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I tapped for sound.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I want to go here so bad. Need to keep saving...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh I think I will tap for sound

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fun fact the Monterey Bay Aquarium is the only aquarium to display a great white shark for more that 16 days. https://youtu.be/QMbHLF_zwjs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Octopuses is correct.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

for 29.95 I had better be able to pick my own sushi

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's $30 in California, so like $15 anywhere else. It's a wonderful aquarium, even for the price.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its not something special tbh. Managing a pump is way easier than mixing salt water and installing filters. When u are already at sea.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It said "Tap for sound" but it didnt work...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wow those octopodesi are neat

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I keep tapping for sound but nothing happens

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is the one in finding dory right? They have a terrible pipe system.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think its the one Finding Dory is based off of, but not the same name. It looks like Monterey Bay Aquarium.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Octopuses. Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, Latin has a load of case endings, so have fun using the dative, genitive, ablative etc. for octopus depending on what sentence it's in

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But "octopus" is not a Latin word, so it doesn't matter what Latin has.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know, but I was aiming this comment at people who insist the 'latin' plural is correct. It comes from Ancient Greek I believe

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OC-TOP-O-DEES NUTZ!!!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Ah, Monterey Bae. Definitely worth a trip.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I recognized it the instant the gif started. Love that place

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's fresh seawater supposed to mean?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

It's what land sea lions crave!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well it's located about 20 feet above the ocean, so instead of keeping the same water in there they circulate it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In aquariums, the ammonia + waste builds up over time due to it being a relatively small area in comparison to the ocean 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Fresh seawater" is literally what it says. Waste-free seawater; the old is pumped into the ocean to disperse safely. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I suppose it means "new" water instead of just pumping around a stored supply of water.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wasn't the Looking for Dory aquarium inspired by this one?

8 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 3

Yes

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You mean where in the world is Dory Sandiego?

8 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

Dory the Explorer

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Looking for Dory? LOOKING FOR DORY?!?

8 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 1

Maybe I am. What's it to you?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*Searching for Dory

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's called Dory Quest

8 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 2

No, it's called Discovering Dory.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

That's the adult version

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I thought it was Where'd Dory Go?

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Tiny Octopus stands by the guy who actually invented the word 'octopus' and pluralized it 'octopodes.' So...there's that.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Guillaume Rondelet used the word 'octopus' in 1554. Linnaeus gets credit, but he shouldn't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Linnaeus does credit Rondelet in his works, however, it was Linnaeus who used the term (and the plurality) and brought it into major useage.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I almost want to argue about this, but not with you. I like you. I bow to your superiority in this.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tiny Octopus appreciates passionate (and dispassionate) discourse about nearly anything. If you'd like, you can PM him.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tiny Octopus, looking at Linnaeus as the father of modern taxonomy (which is rapidly going the way of the dodo anyway), stands by him.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, Rondelet never pluralized the word, and it is only found in three instances in his published works.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Science agrees with you

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"This diversity wouldn't be possible without the pump." Bullshit, there's a zoo in Nebraska with all of these.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY LOSE POWER??

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not true. Also the MB Aquarium is the only one in the world to successfully have a great white, keep it alive, and release it. Five times.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If they have water, they have pumps.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

or circulators*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's saying they couldn't support the aquarium without fresh seawater.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

And do you have any evidence to disprove that other than landlocked states have zoos?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That's the only evidence I need. Literally, the video says "it's not possible" and there are zoos where it's being done.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Unless you're insinuating they're pumping seawater to Nebraska.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Great video but they don't actually explain *why* the system is needed, just that it's needed.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

NYC Aquarium does the same thing for the whales/sharks.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whales????

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, there are beluga whales (or maybe just one, there is renovation so that part is closed) in the NY Aquarium.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They said that many of the species they have there need a constant motion of water in and out, and bringing that water in like that is

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how they can keep them alive (the kelp for example)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess I was looking for why that the motion was needed. *shrug*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh you meant why the animals need them. Yeah I don't know

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes! Exactly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aquarium enthusiast here. The moving water is a requirement for many species of marine life to flourish. Without the constant movement (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Does it have to be ocean water? Dont all aquariums need pumps and filters?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And to answer with a bit more info - artificial seawater is made using fresh water, something to remove chlorine and chloramines, and (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

of course marine salt. It's difficult (at first, it becomes easier with time!) to get the concentration just right. Real seawater has a lot

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

of advantages over making your own.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It could be synthetically crafted, but when your building is situated right next to a right source, it's more cost-effective to make use of.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

many species just won't survive. A lot of freshwater river fish are the same way.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

But why?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know that some species of shark cannot...suck? Water through their gills fast enough to breath, so they have to keep moving or they 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Suffocate and die 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For one, water flow helps oxygenate the water. There are a lot of factors involved in why flow is important, I'll link an article. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of the linked articles focus on aquarium life specifically, but the same concept applies to natural bodies of water like rivers/ocean.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

29.95 if you're 3-12. I went last year it's $50 for adults!!!! It's a great aquarium, but prices aren't great. Worth it if you've never been

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Tell them you are a student, I think that gets it to $35.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought 30 bucks was a lot for it. 50?! Each?!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you attend cal state Monterey bay, it's free for students. Only $15,000 per year for a free pass!!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah 15k a year, I can do that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How big is it? for $50 I better be walking all day through exhibits with the option of a dolphin burger at the end.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's huge! When I can travel to Monterey, I can spend all day at the aquarium. They also have short documentaries and feeding shows.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And penguins

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want to see the feeding shows it'd probably take all day, but to my knowledge there's nothing good to eat there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's plenty to do just outside of the aquarium though, many shops, places to eat, and you got a nice view of the ocean.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its walkable within 2 hours. Its not that huge. The exhibits are cool, but it is super crowded with tourists.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a fantastic aquarium. I highly suggest a visit

8 years ago | Likes 713 Dislikes 2

I can highly recommend it. I haven't been there myself but it looks really cool.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed! My son just got back, thanks to this gif I now know wtf he was talking about standing in a wave

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I live next to it fam

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I missed the chance to go in as we were on a deadline. Great hostal in the area though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been there about three times when I was a lot younger. It's only a few hours away. I should visit again

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the things I miss most now that we've moved from the Bay Area to the affordable world.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suggest a visit, highly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I may or may not have been there on some mind-altering chemicals once. The jellyfish exhibit was or was not incredible

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have to be high?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's compromise and call them octopussies.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think I've ever been there without a sqealing gaggle of kids under that overspray window...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We love this aquarium. Been going to it since I was a youngin. My girls love the puffins, I love the otters, we all love petting the rays.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fresh seawater, eh?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Because the ocean is so clean they can pump it right out of the ocean. Only a handful of aquariums can do that

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Took my former GF there in 2004. Fantastic aquarium, especially the deep sea tank.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not at $30 a visit, I'm afraid.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, it's awesome :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a person who live in Monterey, I can attest that it is the only thing we have going for ourselves

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That and some amazing scuba diving. If only it weren't so damn cold...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When i worked at Genentech they would rent out the whole aquarium for a dinner and you'd sit anywhere eating seafood staring them down.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was awesome 20 years ago when i last visited too. I've been thinking of getting back just for the aquarium.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I grew up with this as my home aquarium. Everything since has been a major disappointment.

8 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

I feel you there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same also same thing comparing Santa Barbara and San Diego zoos' to most places I have been.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cincinnati ohio has a great one too

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Long Beach Aquarium is pretty dope though

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you ever been to the Chatanooga TN Aquarium? I felt that was the Fresh Water version of Monterery Bay

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't. I'll make a point of going when/if I'm in that neck of the woods

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was just in Monterey and wanted to go, but t was $50 a pop!!

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Either through AAA, or Safeway will have discount coupons on occasion (The one in Salinas and the ones in San Jose.)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was so worth it though

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah i wasn't very impressed with the facility for $50/ticket

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've lived close to it for a bit over a year now and only went when I got a free ticket. I agree it's not as amazing as it's made out to be

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you have $200 to blow on 2 hour visit for 4 and a long ass wait to get in. Not worth the money, imo.. better off going scuba diving.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

To make that more clear.. $50 per adult, $30 for kids, family of four is $160 to get in the door... overpriced

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Last time I went it was 0 wait and we took our time at the exibits and watching the feeding made for like 6 hours of fun>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also tell them you are a student for only $35 instead.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Totally agree. This was my childhood aquarium, and every other since has never been up to snuff in comparison.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I grew up in Arroyo Grande and we would go fairly regularly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, I've never been to a better aqarium, and the last time I visited Monterey was about 10 years ago

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably about the same for me and I've been to different countries' aquariums as well too!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you ever go to the Morro Bay Aquarium and Gift Shop? I loved that dinky little place because you could feed seals.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah never been to that one before. Sounds like a nice place!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha, its super dinky little place you can buy fish for $1 and feed some seals then there is a tiny old aquarium. Run by an old couple.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I second this motion.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is it called/where is it located?

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 5

My dad built the crash tank. He does concrete work

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It says in the gif

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How do you even know about the aquarium if you didn't see this post?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's fairly well known in the area around Monterey Bay, CA

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I saw a documentary on them when I was a kid, and was crazy about fish, etc. so I watched the cams they had in their tanks when- I lived in

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just meant for the person I was replying to, how did he know it existed to ask about it if he didn't see the post, which had his answers?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Boston at the time, and didn't actually go there for several years when my famliy visited some old friends in the Bay Area

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Jewel of Morro Bay Aquarium.

Missed the reference at first, thought you were referring to this shithole:

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Heh, I didn't even realise it existed - for reference, the "Jewel of Morro Bay Aquarium" is based off the awesome Monterey Bay one.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I went on field trips there as a kid; this other place did not impress (more depressed).

As a bay area resident I was about to scold you about suggesting the Fisherman's wharf until I realized their was another. Carry on.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bread bowl!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hell yes!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay I work in San Francisco and frequently go to the Monterey Aquarium, I didn't know they had a fishermans warf in Monterey too.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah my bad. I called it wrong. It's cannery way like the other guy said.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Cannery Row", however there is also a Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey which has a bunch of places that serve good chowder.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought it was just cannery Way or w/e

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Wharf just a bit down the road from the Cannery
