So having just moved house and got a big enough bedroom, gf and I decided to upgrade to a king-size, and to save money and give it a personal touch I decided to build the bed. This gained a fair amount of mocking from family and friends as I’ve never ever built anything before, and a bed isn’t easy apparently. Well anyway. Enjoyed the process and happy with the result! So here’s what we did:

Plans - to scale...ish

More plans and ideas.

This is for the slat supports.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The gf has got wood

Gonna need dis

Bit of sanding

Marking for cutting - it’s construction grade timber. Gonna make this thing solid af

Didn’t bother getting an electric saw (they’re expensive - got a sander instead) so it’s all sawn by hand

Is it gonna work

Yeah boi!

And level!

Slat supports in

Not screwed in - I have to take it all apart to give the wood a finish and put it in the right room

Slate going in

It works! (Wrong mattress obvs)

Trying shades of paint

Drying

More drying with beer

Again wrong mattress. But all screwed together now

And the right mattress arrives!

So for the headboard I liked the idea of this - sort of patchwork effect.

Plans

Gf posted on a local page explaining what we were looking for and someone in the next village let us have a look at her wood - so it’s all reclaimed.

Hard at work

And having sanded, trimmed and painted a few of them here’s the result. On 1 and a half sheets of MDF cut to size and screwed into the supports made of the same stuff as the bed frame.

Glueing!

Let’s let this set overnight

Glueing on the border

More glue drying

Attaching to the bed - followed by a very scary moment of truth (headboard weighs a LOT)

There it is!

All in all not including tools cost about £150 for the wood and paint, and it’s more solid than anything we could afford to buy. Hope you like. TL;DR built a bed

Y’all look like fun, and good job!

A lot of scary end grain joinery. Otherwise a powerhouse of ingenuity.

Very cool. Screwing the legs to the outside if the frame, won't that out a lot of stress on the screws and overtime give out?

Possibly, I have no Idea having never done anything like it before. But it’s coming up for a year soon and not a creak in sight.

Be sure to post the pics when that structurally fails. That said, diy is always about learning. Next thing you'll have a garage...

Ye of little faith. But yes if it does I shall ;)

I up voted this because I respect the gumption required to do anything yourself. I also like good content and shit failing gives chuckles.

The center slat support may not be sufficient but other than that it's overbuilt if anything.

I worried about this too - with the smaller mattress there was a bit of flexibility but the bigger one is a lot firmer so it doesn’t dip /1

/2 at all really - if it was an issue I was going to replace it with one of the big beams like the frame - so we’ll see!

You could also put a leg in the center. Easier.

Aye, saves taking it all apart I guess. Will see how it goes and sort if necessary.
