I too have arrived early for an event and loitered around for a bit before going in. Not forty years though. Bit excessive.
Well, it took 40 years for everyone that was not allowed to go in to die.
It was explicit they were waiting 40 for changes of generations and purification/learning, not that it took that long to get to Israel.

They actually get there first (Numbers 13) but doubt God will help them overcome the people there, so they aren't allowed in (Numbers 14).
