Lake Hillier in Australia

From above the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. No-one fully knows why the lake is pink. Scientists speculate that the colour comes from a dye created by bacteria that lives in the salt crusts.

Blood Falls

This strange glacial feature was discovered in Antarctica in 1911.This salt-water flowing out of a glacier is tainted with iron oxide causing the blood colour.

Red Tides

More correctly known as an algal bloom, the so-called Red tide is a natural event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column and can convert entire areas of an ocean or beach into a blood red colour. This phenomena is caused by high levels of phytoplankton accumulating to form dense, visible clouds near the surface of the water. While some of these can be relatively harmless, others can be harbingers of deadly toxins that cause the deaths of fish, birds and marine mammals. In some cases, even humans have been harmed by red tides though no human exposure are known to have been fatal. While they can be fatal, the constituent phytoplankton in ride tides are not harmful in small numbers.

Sailing Stones

The mysterious moving stones of the packed-mud desert of Death Valley have been a center of scientific controversy for decades. Rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds have been known to move up to hundreds of yards at a time. Some scientists have proposed that a combination of strong winds and surface ice account for these movements. However, this theory does not explain evidence of different rocks starting side by side and moving at different rates and in disparate directions. Moreover, the physics calculations do not fully support this theory as wind speeds of hundreds of miles per hour would be needed to move some of the stones.

Ice Circles

A rare phenomenon usually only seen in extremely cold countries, scientists generally accept that Ice Circles are formed when surface ice gathers in the center of a body of water rather than the edges. A slow moving river current can create a slow turning eddy, which rotates, forming an ice disc. Very slowly the edges are ground down until a gap is formed between the eddy and the surrounding ice. These ice circles have been seen with diameters of over 500 feet and can also at times be found in clusters and groups at different sizes.

Lunar Rainbows

This photo was actually produced using long-exposure.

However, if the conditions are just right, you can see Lunar Rainbows with the naked eye, if you're paying attention to the sky opposite the moon. For once, the explanation is simple: Lunar Rainbows work exactly like rainbows and appear whenever bright moonlight refracts just so off of moisture in the air.

Grand Prismatic Spring

It's the largest hot spring in the United States. The colours of Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic Spring are caused by bacteria and microbes growing around the water’s edge.

Crystal Caves

These gypsum crystals in the Naica Mine were formed over 500,000 years in underground hot springs. Unfortunately, the caves are closed to the public (as they are super toxic and dangerous).

Glow Worms

Glow worms, which are infact insects, are bioluminescent animals common to New Zealand and Australia. A number of caves are noted for their presence.

Tianzi Mountains

Found in the Hunan province of China, the unique views from atop the Tianzi Mountains can be accessed by cable car. These towers are naturally formed of quartzite sandstone pillars.

Double Rainbow

This is something we all know about, but not everyone understands why it happens so I'll explain it simply. So what does it mean?!!!

Sunlight reflects in a raindrop not once, but twice, creating a secondary rainbow outside of the much brighter primary arc. The best views of this phenomenon occur when the sky is still dark with rain-clouds, as the gray background helps the much dimmer colours of the secondary arc appear.

We start out with a giant pad followed by blood falls and a red tide. This is a natural phenomenon with which I am well acquainted.

"No one knows why it's pink" & "scientists think it's due to some dye", couldn't they take a sample?

I'm pretty sure those moving rocks are Geodudes.

Sailing stones more like pet rocks that ran away from home

red tides remind me of The End of Evangelion

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I definitely read that first one as Lake Hitler.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It should be fairly easy to esimate the source of the pink colour from the first one using spectroscopy. Just saying

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Glow worms? Nah, man, Blackreach.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Lunar rainbow.... what does it mean?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

one wrong step in those crystal caves and you're fucked

The glow bugs in "Pitch Black"

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Clearly the sailing stones are being ridden by the pioneers around. You can get quite a few miles out of one in good shape.

11 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

Go on, explain glow worms. No? I will then. They resemble a starry night, so moths that fly into the caves fly up and get stuck in the (1)

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

sticky dangling strands. They're then pulled up to the ceiling, sprayed with digestive juices, and eaten by the glow worms. And these (1)

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

are the larval form of the insect, not the insect itself. Sauce: I'm a kiwi.

That red tide is some full on Biblical shit.

I always thought it was a euphemism TIL.

If you don't take the bible literally it's an extremely likely inspiration.

Nice.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This explains how pebbles move not boulders. Especially in a place that doesn't have that much water. Sorry but it's still a mystery

tl;dr: plains flooded -> ice surrounds rocks -> shit moves around easily.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Doesn't explain why there's not a larger profile in the sand further up the path that the ice would have formed.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean...?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The experiment in the article says he put the rock in a large container of water, froze it, then placed that on water and sand and blew 1/

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

on it. If it's the same mechanism, you'd need a large amount of ice surrounding rocks that size to get the same effect, and when the wind 2/
