This one's the Porte Flavia, in Sardinia, Italy

The most famous of them is Petra, in Jordan. You may know if from the 3rd and final Indiana Jones movie. Here's a rare shot of it being approached at night.

And a wider shot

This is the Predjama Castle in Slovenia, a real stunner (though aren't they all)

Beautiful in summer and winter, the cavernous surroundings keep the interiors livable regardless of the season

This absolutely beauty is the Sumela Monastery in Turkey. Hard to imagine how it was built (and how many lives may have been lost in doing so)

One more shot of the Sumela but I promise this is the last one

oh no I lied

Not all of these carvings have breathtaking facades. Some, such as the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra India, just look rudimentary...

until you get inside

This entire village, on the other hand, looks chaotic and almost hard to take in. Sassi di Matera, Italy, is over 9,000 years old, which is kind of stunning.

Third AND FINAL Indiana Jones movie, nice.

Have you considered Derinkuyu? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derinkuyu_underground_city

I like it! I was focusing on facades but this is so spectacular interior work

Masada … the need to leverage geological extremes to protect your village from surprise attacks was a very real thing to early civilizations!

I'm a big fan of Puebloan cliff dwellings. Top tier

I truly enjoyed the third, and final, Indiana Jones movie.

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I also enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which, despite being a video game, is a rather good fourth movie.

I also enjoyed Fate of Atlantis, an even earlier video game that is equal to the movies in storytelling and vibes

10 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't know there was video games. Might need to check it out

It is very good. Fun exploration, good story, amazing voice acting. Highly recommend.

Porto Flavia is quite new in comparition to the other (1924). It's a loading dock for ore from a mining operation. What you don't see are two tunnels of 2000 ft connected to nine vertical reservoirs with together 10000 t capacity. They could load a ship at ~500t/h via a 52 ft conveyor belt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porto_Flavia

Predjama Castle isn't carved out of the mountain, it's a normal stone block construction with stone quarried off site.
It was just built in the mouth of a cave to prevent access from that side.

Petra is a whole city and the two pictures shown, show two different buildings, it's a very cool place :)

Cliffside real estate: when your HOA is literally a mountain and your front door is a cave entrance. Talk about location, location, location!

"Montezuma's Castle" (always hated that name...) in central AZ. The others are Canyon De Chelly and Tonto ruins. All here in AZ. Although there are nice ones scattered in several surrounding states.

All throughout history, people have liked a good Cliffside Lair.

Third and final Indiana Jones movie? If only that was true. Or have I slipped into an alternate dimension where there are only three? Is Eric Stoltz still in Back to the Future?

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, in this dimension Eric Stoltz was *never* in Back to the Future and there are 2 Godfather movies and 3 Indiana Jones films.

There is a chapel carved of salt in a salt mine:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wieliczka_Salt_Mine

Also, of interest, Coober Pede Australia is underground, carved out of opal mines.

And one in Colombia, as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Cathedral_of_Zipaquir

All of these are of great interest to me, thanks!
