Nope, only the amiga 600, 1200 & 4000 used SMD tech

I do electronic repair as a hobby as well. Do you have any literature you would recommend?

I spend a lot of time talking to Electronics Engineers, they are a very helpful bunch. books arent imo.

Very fair, I have learned more reballing dead 360's and the like than I did in college. Never thought of using led's to look for dead paths
