Critically acclaimed as “quite simply, the fastest, most graceful game machine on the market”, the N64 was one of the first gaming consoles to have four controller ports and could handle a 4-player split screen without significant slowdown. Named after its 64-bit microprocessor, which had power comparable to Pentium processors in desktop computers, its advanced 3D graphics allowed textures to render smoothly, rather than pixelated.
The system’s higher resolution and pressure-sensitive controller were ideal for the EA Sports’s second generation Madden and FIFA games, and it was designed in tandem with Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda, which are widely considered by critics and the public to be two of the greatest and most influential games of all time.
The last major home console to use cartridges as its primary storage format, it was built and priced at $199.99 to compete with the Sony PlayStation—and, indeed it did that very well. In its first year, 3.6 million units were sold in the U.S. alone.

Body Harvest was the basis for Grand Theft Auto 3, which would go on to be the biggest game series ever.

Omg! I remember it sooo well! Those were some good times. Best graphics anyone had seen?

It never had anything on playstation
Filanwizard
Goldeneye is probably what cemented the FPS on console and showed it could be done well on console
Filanwizard
Doom and Quake had ports before but goldeneye actually ran and controlled great.
zihad922
Boba Fett ‘s best appearance was in Shadows. Hands down best Star Wars game ever. Dash Rendar should have a movie
drduffer
Got my kids one of these and Goldeneye was one of their favorites.
FreshNews247
Never had one. I'm a Sony boy. BUT I remember seeing Zelda and I was shocked at how amazing it looked.
DaMummy
I'm in my 30s, but can you still adopt me and gift me an N64 and Goldeneye?
drduffer
My kids are in their 30s so it’s not impossible. But that N64 is long gone and their own kids aren’t old enough yet.
Thatknifeguy
I’m 36 and I saved all my old consoles. I love firing them up occasionally just to feel the nostalgia
FurballExcel5
You’re a good parent.
herrschniedelwichsen
I've been hunting for Ogre Battle 64 forever.
ThomasTheWankEngine3
really was major launching platform for nintendo characters.goldeneye is basically the framework for all FPSs now, (halo was a big jump tho)
DeeDoubleYu
I still remember exactly where I was when I saw the poster for Halo... Just the fucking poster and I damn near lost my mind.

#16 Anybody else play Bomberman 64? That and Star Fox 64 were my shit.
Havok707
Absolutely loved both. couldnt get through B64 because it was in english and I couldnt speak it at the time.
VidiVeniThenSheLeft
Bomberman 64 was sweeeet, and its multiplayer was surprisingly fun. SF64 was, of course, amazing. Did you get the shades?
MeticulouslyCareless
But of course! Along with Super Smash Bros., I put my hours into those games than any other on the N64!
chri087v
Both Bomberman 64 and Bomberman 64: Second Attack were awesome
MeticulouslyCareless
The Second Attack was a sneaky beast! I didn't see it advertised ANYWHERE. Just saw it behind a glass one day and nagged my mom for it.

Man the nostalgia of this song, reminding me of simpler times. Don’t think I’ll ever get such happiness back?
ITradeNewds
man i loved banjo kazooie. hope nintendo will do a new one up in the next couple years
DeGnomeKing
Rare the company that makes it, said recently that they are working on a old game that hadn't seen the light if day in a long time! 1-2
DeGnomeKing
Making people think that it's either, banjo 4 or Ditty Kong racing 2 or viva pinjata 3. Honestly I'd play all of them!
ITradeNewds
if its a direct sequel to nutz and boltz, im just going to go ahead and off myself before the depression sets in.
MasonTheNosam
Hopefully not, but nutz and bolt wasn't a bad game. It just wasn't banjo threeie.
CargoManshark
I really wish Nintendo would make more of their back catalogue accessible. Add 64 to Nintendo online and update more often. GameCube too.
FreshNews247
They are adding 64 games im pretty sure.
Pheynx
N64 was just announced for the Switch along with Sega Genesis.
adiving
Jfyi, either the N64 or gamecube (perhaps both, but certain of 1/2) has emulators that can play online.
CargoManshark
Yeah but there's always something a little off about emulators. I have a modded Wii for NES, SNES, DS and Sega.
adiving
Never noticed it, always quite enjoyed stuff like ssb but I refuse to support Nintendo.
Havok707
Online you say
chancer888
Goldeneye ??
CatfichePi
Ah, yes, my first time realizing what anxiety was.

Honestly, try playing that shit today. It has aged terribly. And that,s coming from a retro game collector that LOVES old shit.

I'm on your side with this opinion.

Made by the same people but this time with more development budget
GeneralAnubis
VidiVeniThenSheLeft
Technically speaking, yes. But more people had Goldeneye so i had more friends to play it with.
OblivionCityGuard
Awesome console, but terrible controller
litelbrown
Other than the stick it's fine
YouMayFindThisMildlyInteresting
It invented analog sticks on joypads, and controller rumble. Not too bad of a legacy.
OblivionCityGuard
I think it's bad because it makes 3d games awkward to control, which is ironic because 3D is the main innovation of the console
TI99Kitty
Nintendo's good at that. Loved the NES. Hated the controller that was all sharp angles and corners. Wiimote was a cool idea, but PITA to use
TI99Kitty
GameCube's controller isn't comfortable for long sessions. Bought the Switch, and before it was shipped to me, bought the Pro controller.
Magus25
Glad I'm not the only one. Playing my switch undocked kills my thumbs after a while. Gotta give it to Sony/Microsoft they have cozy controls
