As a healthcare giver and a person that's had C-diff, it is one if the only infectious diseases that I fear the most. I became septic and had to spend 3 days in the hospital because of it and they had me on 3 different antibiotics to get rid of it.

I think you mean the flag of the US coast guard. It is white with a blue "Great seal" on it. The bit that looks a bit like the us flag is actually an escutcheon, a shield w a blue field and red and white stripes. But no stars and white instead of red outermost stripes. 1) Clostridioides difficile (aka C-diff) is a type of bacteria that lives in the soil and naturally grows in the gut of some people. When the gut bacteria is disrupted, C-diff can overgrow to the point that it crowds out all the good/beneficial bacteria in the gut, and then it releases toxins that cause sickness, including watery/possibly bloody diarrhea (which can happen a dozen times a day), fever, and abdominal pain.

As for what it smells like, the only way I can describe it is that it smells like death. For anyone who's ever taken a walk on an outdoor trail, suddenly smelled something foul and realized that some animal died nearby and has probably been slowly rotting there for weeks, that's what c-diff smells like.

I'm not really qualified to say. I'm a lab person (and not even in the microbiology department), so I don't really have experience working with people who have it or comparing symptoms to other illnesses.
The listed symptoms seem similar, but a nurse or doctor could do a much better job with that. One thing though: someone with a C-diff infection is probably not even going to be able to take a solid shit. The body just can't. So anything solid or semi-solid isn't c-diff.

It doesn’t actually grow on surfaces due to being a facultative anaerobe. Oxygen basically kills it. What does happen however it is forms a huge amount of spores while inside a patient, which are what get released everywhere and what cause subsequent infections

Huh, didn't know that. I know it's a major problem for re-infection, either someone reinfecting themselves or others with contaminated hands, I thought it would also grow on surfaces because I've heard stories of people needing to have pros decontaminate their houses.
But I wasn't a very good microbiology student and haven't worked directly with that stuff in years, so I'm just going off old memories.

I worked one summer monitoring the removal of a landfill. Even with aromatic dampeners positioned throughout the area, it made little difference. What made it worse was the animal rendering plant next door. C-diff still smells worse

I disagree. Death has its own unique smell. Death is more of a low-tone overpowering smell. CDif is much sharper on the nose. It is wildly unique and hard to describe, but I wouldn’t compare it to death.

Mmm indeed. cdiff has more of an oakey aftertaste, with hints of pine and mint. Whereas death is a more aged blend, giving it much more of an earthy tone. 🤔

Let’s not forget about the stark (C) difference in mouth feel, death is cold and oily and coats the back of the tongue where as CDiff is more spicy and mouth forward and kinda hits the nose like horseradish, but worse.
