I made it through the latest round of office lay-offs, and I found out today that my cube-mate who I hate is moving somewhere else!

Oct 11, 2017 10:42 AM

I made it through the layoffs too. Then 6 months later they quietly laid me off. That was Friday

unannounced final rounds of layoffs start next week

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes, that's better than a pay raise.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A company that does frequent layoffs cant offer security. Plenty of companies out there can offer that. just depends on what market.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still, lay offs aren't a good sign. Been through it.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

We all have....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are a lot of naïve youths commenting that I'm crazy for thinking that most companies lay people off...you never think it can hit you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are just young and foolish like we all once were. Thinking back, this is actually number 4 layoff for me in 14 years. They will learn

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My last job had annual layoffs. First time I saw it happen was also my first panic attack. By year 3, I was hoping I'd get picked.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I worked at a grocery store in Florida where instead of firing when it slowed down they cut hours until people were forced to quit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Annual layoffs sounds terribly stressful

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was. They'd pretty much have middle management select a person from each team to cut. Even direct managers didn't know it was coming.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That puts a ton of stress on the management making the decisions too...sounds like a toxic environment.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

cube-mate.... guuuuuuh. I wouldn't share a cube, I'd find a new job.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So, we're not actually in the same cube, just that we're situated in a way that our cubes open towards each other and are very close.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah gotcha... last company I owrked at, one of the offices in boston shared cubes... I was like... wtf no way. Great he's moving tho :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a woman, and let me tell you...she's the worst. Comments loudly about literally anything I'm doing so everyone can hear...

"OH LUKE, IS IT RED HEAD MONDAY AGAIN ON THAT STUPID IMAGE-ER SITE YOU LOVE?" "Yes is is Sharon, you twat."

What's the world coming to when a man can't stare at scantily clad women from his work computer desk in peace?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What company @op?

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

White house

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ooooooooooooooooh neeeeeeeeever post anything about your company online. Good or bad. Social Media, Reddit, here. Never works out

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Probably best not to say on here. We're in PA though.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Air Liquide/Airgas?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Warm though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ha! No shit! Me too, but we're not sure to start layoffs for another month, so we aren't office buddies.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had a friend that posted (on FB) nice things about her new job. Then at layoffs, they said that was one of the reasons for letting her go.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a bullshit reason to give for laying off someone

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's just smart to leave anything related to your job off FB.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, it just seems smart to be off FB period

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair enough, what field then?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Industrial Gases

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

About to grammar check u, then i learned something today... gases is the plural, gasses is a verb (i.e. Joe gasses up his car) - thanks OP!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Based on the location, field, and the fact that there are multiple rounds of layoffs, I can say with 80% certainty it's GE

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Swing and a miss.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I want to hope it's related to fracking, but I don't wanna celebrate people losing jobs.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I just read an article stating fracking did cause the earthquake in Mexico.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't you think it's time to find a new job? I mean layoffs suck.

8 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 7

Layoffs? You talking about layoffs?!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Easiest and most surefire way to get a promotion/raise is to job hop every couple of years.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You must be the cube-mate

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Problem is some companies give severence pay after the final day. Taking a new job removes it (for some it's more than normal pay). 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want the severence for sure, plus vacation pay. If I even accept a job and my company finds out, I lose all that and they kick me out

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't have too. My job does volunteer winter layoffs. A lot of guys take a month (paid through unemployment) and go on vacation

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Working outdoors on roofs all year, nice to have some time off in winter. Steep roofs suck when it's icy and below 0 in Wisconsin.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most roofers won't work during the winter where I live.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well I'm not an actual roofer. Work for a supplier. So we Delievery all he roofing and siding. But that includes placing by hand on the roof

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But it is a lot slower. Only a few larger companies work year round. Hence the volunteer layoff

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you make it through the lay-offs though, there are lots more opportunities when the dust settles. Every company has lay-offs. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 12

Plus layoff means severance v

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Latest round" means there've been layoffs before and there will be again. Don't get too comfy.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I've never worked at a company that had lay offs.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where have you worked? I don’t know of a company in my field (civil engineering) that hasn’t had layoffs.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a Programmer in Australia.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you jump ship every time there are lay-offs you'll never stay anywhere. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 14

That's.... that's not true at all.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you're headed." -- seriously though, that doesn't necessarily sound bad.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every company I ever worked for that started doing layoffs eventually just went under...except Microsoft who does layoffs for fun, I think.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Statistically if you stay anywhere for more than a couple years you're going to make a lower salary than if you move though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You mean you'll make less by staying longer?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most places don't give adequate salary increases for tenure, you'll get more money from a hiring manager than you'd get from annual raises.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've learned to jump ship when you see someone high up leave and take a number of people with them.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, smart middle managers are the ones to watch because they're also the first ones to get the axe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They had a small round of layoffs at 1 company. Nobody sweated it because they really did go overboard hiring for a few projects, when 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In my experience, if a company is doing lay-offs, especially multiple rounds, that means the ultimate lay-off is not far away any more.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Moving Day. Look it up. Or watch all of Arrested Development.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends how big the company is. Big companies need layoffs or you end up with too much chaff.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I've seen companies get lean and attractive then get sold or they cut to survive and die any way.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even if you survive being sold the new company will usually cut even more or change your job dramatically to get you to quit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It sounds like there will be a boss battle, the ultimate lay-off, I already hear the music.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I feel like I wouldn't mind Mr. Rogers as a boss. But then again, be wary of the nice ones ...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*IT'S THE FINAL LAY-OFF* *dududu-dun*

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Partially true, but every company does not have layoffs.

8 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 2

everybody downvoting that layoffs exist. Hell, I'm on a protect to replace an old manual system. There will be layoffs. It happens people

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wording is weird. Maybe "not every company has layoffs". SAT prep ftw

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every big successful company has lay offs. Be a good employee and never worry, except make yourself worry so human nature doesn't take over

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Not really. Depends on the industry. If you already got the minimum of employees, there can't be any less, especially in restaurants and /1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In today's world, you'll be hard pressed to find somewhere that doesn't do it. And if they don't, somebody who does will buy them.

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 77

Uh.... no

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy jaded Batman. I've been with 6 orgs. None have been aquired or laid off any of its workforce.

8 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

What industry do you work in? I imagine that matters a lot in layoff probability.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depends on the kind of companies you work for respectively your job. Nobody's save from losing their job, but layoffs aren't always a /1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wrong, out of my 7 jobs one did lay offs and that was Target Canada
