Fast and easy - 3.

Today I went to my first consultation with a gynecologist to discuss forms of contraception. I was sent to this woman via my primary doctor to specifically discuss tubal ligation. I FULLY expected for her to say no, given the amount of research I’ve done on other people’s experiences with the procedure and my societal status. However, I’m very bothered by her reasoning. I am a person who is extremely unorthodox and do not find fulfillment and value in traditions like most people. I explained to her that I’ve been through a lot of traumatic events in my life, and I literally do not have the emotional capacity to mother a child. In addition, I have tried other forms of contraception which did nothing but damage my mental health. I was on the pill for 12 years and it turned me into a hormonal monster. I know that I need to stick to my guns and remain educated and persistent in my battle to get my tubes tied. It’s just pathetic that I even have to battle in the first place. Luckily, the gynecologist is going to get me in contact with the head of the department so I can HOPEFULLY convince him. I have also made a document of the pros and cons of having kids from reliable sources, and my own personal reasons for not wanting kids. My philosophy professor always told me, “Never make an argument for those that already agree with you.” That being said, I will always consider all sides to an argument, and I will always do my best to understand. But if I end up regretting the procedure (although I will absolutely not), it’s my own regret, not her’s. Also, there are plenty of kids in the world that need a home that I would gladly adopt if I did end up regretting it. If anyone has gone through this same battle, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated !!!

****UPDATE*****
My gynecologist (who had originally said no) just messaged me and thanked me for the research that I’ve done on tubal ligation and said that if I still wanted the procedure in 3 months, that she would do it. AHHH, I AM ELATED RIGHT NOW! Thank you so much to everyone who messaged/commented with helpful advice. I appreciate you all tremendously. Your advice will undoubtedly help the many others who are unfortunately suffering through this same battle. This is the only form of social media I use regularly, and this is a prime example why. The Imgur community is the shit!
Also, this link has been mentioned in the comments numerous times, and is EXTREMELY helpful. If you or someone you know is trying to get tubal ligation or a vasectomy, I would suggest checking it out.

I don’t want kids. I don’t want to pass on my crappy chronic illnesses with chronic pain to a child. I want my tubes tied too.

Show up with a legal release of liability for your next doc/appointment. Best of luck.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I had a vasectomy at 27 and it was the best thing I ever did.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Texas? If you get your tubes tied you are denying eggs the possibility to be fertilized & born. In Texas that’s pre-abortion abortion./s

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

After 6 kids (1 is mine) my wife (38) still had trouble getting this done. Finally found the right doctor. I had the snip done no problem.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

FYI all 7 are mine... At least considered BTW. Yeah after tubes tied she still took in another and convinced me with this scheme. Me=sucker

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Your body, your choice. Find a new doc. And be sure to tell off that shit doctor.

As a Texan man, I know this is definitely my place to give my opin- where is everyone going?

That was darker than a back alley abortion clinic

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Heh heh heh take your +1. I laughed.

4 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Had the same thing happen to me although I already had 2 kids. The consulting doctor told me no, but one of the surgeons said yes.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

A tubal ligation can be undone. You have eggs if you want kids. It's not like you asked the doc for a Hysterectomy or anything! New Doc time

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I got mine at 24 and I have no kids. Thank you state of Washington!!!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both my pregnancies almost killed me. I still had to get my fiances permission to get my tubal. All cuz I didn't have a 3rd kid yet...

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Look for a new gyn.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Stick to your guns, sorry it has to be so difficult. Kids are not great for everyone. You'll find a provider that will support you.

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

This guy may regret making this offer in the near future.

4 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 1

I'm more of a grandfather's age but I'll add my name to the list. This is BS. Find another doctor. What state/country you in?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I don't know this guy personally, it was just shared to me. Wish I did though!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm 32 and I don't want kids. My doctor wanted me to get a mental health check.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't take it personally unless the doctor is persistent. They do get a lot of people making rash/uninformed decisions. (1/2)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A good doctor separates their own opinion from your own once they know youre of sound mind.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I would want a doc who told me to sleep on a decision, but respects my choices.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s often a hospital policy (esp Catholic ones), so call around. It’s illegal to deny it on non-medical grounds federally, remind them.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In the USA doctors have the right to deny any elective procedure, just gotta find one who will do it.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was wrong - they can’t require husband or father consent before sterilizing, but they’re not obligated to do it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Admiting even the slightest of wrongness on the internet, you are a rare breed.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Keep fighting! I got mine done at 25 and haven't looked back. It toom 5 doctors and having one laugh at me. Self advocate as hard as you can

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

My sister got her tubes tied at 21 after finally finding a doc who actually listened to her and saw her as an adult. So much condescension.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

No kids, married for several years, wife got her tubes tied a couple years back ZERO questions asked. Get a new doc and report this one.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

Yes to getting a new doc but doctors can refuse elective procedures like this and it’s pretty common for them to question these requests.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

New doc time.

4 years ago | Likes 555 Dislikes 11

This. Not even worth your time anymore. The doc's job is to advise, not tell you what to do.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

its quite common. some still cant with out husbands approval, even if they arent married. this is part of larger issue with womens rights

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems to be a lot of that going around right now :-(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

social views change faster than laws or customs. none of these laws are really 'new'. they are just the old ways trying to fight the river

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm married with kids and more now than ever I support everyone who does not want kids. Not because I regret it, but because most reasons

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

People give for not wanting kids are good reasons. This shit is hard and you shouldn't do it if you don't want to or think you shouldn't.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And I'm frankly frustrated by how much pressure is placed on people to have kids.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"I promise, if I do regret it, you will absolutely never hear about it! So you can live the rest of your life with a clear conscience!"

4 years ago | Likes 213 Dislikes 2

Even if she were to regret it at some point, there are other options, e.g. adoption...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a feeling this would be an american issue where someone would get sued if she did change her mind

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Right-o

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly. They should just have waivers that state in the event that you regret your decision, the doctor made you fully aware >

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

of the permanency of the procedure and are off the hook legally.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you can't actually sign away your right to sue in the US, at best you can sign a document that makes it harder to win.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You can/do if you join the military. Can't sue military doctors, unless that's changed recently.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your doctor doesn't have a say. All they can do is advise you. If you make an informed decision they must respect it.

4 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 17

I was 21 and called 5 ob/gyns before I found one that would even TALK to me about a tubal. The 8th doc I spoke with finally agreed to do it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's how it works in theory. In practice, if the doc doesn't want to do a procedure, you can't force them to do it.

4 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

Doctors are slaves to my whim? This is amazing news!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thats not remotely true, especially not with an elective procedure.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Without a medical necessity they can absolutely refuse to provide a given procedure, especially if not refusing opens them up to lawsuits.

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Childless elderly couple here....no regrets on our part.......but You do you.

4 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 6

I have a child, I want more. But bottomline, YOU get to make your reproductive choices. Not me, not some doctor worried bout regret, YOU.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hi child-free middle age fellow!!

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I want to second this. We’re an older couple, child free and profoundly happy as can be. Best life choice we ever made!

Who's your wife, Chick Norris?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*and I got pegnant. (You're welcome.)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That kids gonna be a little shit. I just know it.

4 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 0

Get a different doctor, and don’t talk about your trauma. When my wife wanted the procedure (albeit at 40) we just said “don’t want ‘em”.

4 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 5

Mind you, we were older, but we told her gyno very clearly “we don’t want kids, ever, so just sign the form.” And she did.

4 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Indeed; older. But also; a couple. That makes so much difference. This person is single. Apparently a man needs to give approval somehow.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you talk up the psychological aspect, they’ll assume you’re damaged and can heal. Make it simple: you aren’t interested in kids, period.

4 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

People don’t understand that some of us just never had that biological urge to reproduce, and it’s too alien to their own thinking.

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

I don’t get it at all, personally. I wanted kids so bad it hurt before I had mine and I love her so much. Luckily, I don’t have to

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Understand to respect another human’s autonomy. Parenthood is hard, it should be a choice.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Coincidentally, I was 28 when I got my vasectomy. It was one of the easiest things I've ever done. This double standard is bullshit.

4 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

Well vasectomies are far less invasive, far less risky and far more reversible. It's hard to compare them.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Actually, they are comparable. Tubal ligation is a more involved procedure, sure. But reversal success and risks are about equal these days.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lower risk, more reversible, and you can freeze some beforehand easily.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tubal ligation is more involved. Reversal success and risks are about equal these days. You can also freeze eggs, TMYK!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Freezing eggs is also more involved, less likely to work, and more expensive to use them.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, sure. But I also didn't inquire about freezing my swimmers and the doctor never brought it up. So I doubt it's a consideration.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think its a case of being able to say "well he could have just frozen his swimmers it's super easy." In case the patient tries to sue.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Call around. Specifically ask (before making an appointment) if the docs will tie tubes for 28 YO’s with no kids. It’s called Doc shopping

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Just don't do it for antibiotics and painkillers. That kind of Doctor Shopping is a serious problem in placers, especially for the former.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oooo I will most definitely take note of this! Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It took me 3 doctors, one child and my tubes were done at age 25. Im 48 no regrets. Just state I don't want them and call around.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I had to pay cash with my tax refund it ended up being a couple grand that was 22 years ago though. Keep calling around.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You may not get a definite “yes”. But you want “if it’s the best course for the patient” and to stay away from “doc prefers to wait…”. /1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

may ask around your local social media. There are other women your age wanting this. And someone who succeeded may be able to give you /2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A doc recommendation /3
