I'm 21 years old and about 7 months ago I found out that I'm going to be a dad. It was un-planned and very scary at first, but I realize, now, how lucky I am to be a part of this. And, to have the family, mother-to-be, and friends that support this new family.

One friend in particular (let's just call him Rick) is my old roommate and childhood friend. Since I told him the news he has been supportive, generous, and as happy to be a part of this change as I am.

Needless to say, I could use your help.

Rick is a fellow Imgurian, and if this picture of him (cleverly hidden behind the posts, with the yellow shirt) helping me put together my daughters crib gets enough upvotes, then maybe he will see it and smile.

Rick is a good friend. Be like Rick. Upvote Rick.

North Dakotans are pretty nice, go bison

As a fellow new parent, lots of patience with your child and your wife/gf/SO. I felt like I was going crazy after giving birth.

Became a dad at 19, unplanned. It was scary, but the moment you hold your boy/girl for the first time, all fear flies out the window, grats!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm 23, BF is 19. Expecting in October. I'm so proud of how he's stepped up and grown over the months. Can't wait for him to meet our girl.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And let's make a TRILOGY out of it!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And turn it into a movie and split the last movie into 2-3 parts for no reason.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah man, that would never work... but maybe with WIZARDS....

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can't shake the feeling like he's got some kind of mortal/immortal opposition! Like it were destined!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Abort! Abort!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you're strapped for cash, almost none of the baby gadgets are actually necessary.

9 years ago | Likes 184 Dislikes 1

so true. my first xmas my parents went nuts with gifts, and all I cared about were the boxes and 99 cent dolls. ps best of luck OP !

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

craigslist. people toss barely used stuff all the time. check the wealthy neighborhoods on trash night.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I bought my son a ball that rolls around to help him crawl. He spent 3 hours playing with a straw instead. So much stuff you don't need.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bouncy chair was a godsend for one; swing for the other. But yeah, lots of unneeded stuffs. Need square swaddle cloths and diaper champ.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We saved money by getting a lot secondhand at Once Upon a Child. Cloth diapers and breastfeeding = no recurring costs.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm 7 months pregnant and having the hardest time explaining this to my family. I don't want fancy crap, just his basic needs to be met.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Second hand. Saves money and everyone is happy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Car seat, crib, food, clothes. & you're done. I recommend a long term convertible car seat to save $ in the long run. Never buy a used seat.

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Clothes and furniture, even toys are going to come your way, assuming at least some of your relatives and friends are fully-finctional.

While they can be great rock'n' plays only can be used for a couple months. We liked our pack and play but if using long term would def 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

get a mattress, unless you travel it's not really a necessary purchase. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess diaper too. We even did some super cheap cloth diapers, cost a bit more than a box of diapers and lasted two years.

We used some Alva's that we were gifted, also some Sunbaby diapers and cheapie flats/fitteds with covers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno those jumperoos saved my sanity and let me eat and shower

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah there are lots of things I liked having but if you can't afford them they aren't necessary.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically the only one worth buying is the baby gate if you have stairs. The rest are just trying to dupe people into spending money

9 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

My kids, by the time they could crawl, knew not to go near stairs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come baby shower the only thing you'll need are diapers, bottles, and wipes. Clothing they outgrow so fast you'd be better to but when need

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As it happens we didn't have one of those - my wife couldn't use one. We just taught the kids to come down stairs backwards.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

New mattress for crib shown to cut down on SIDS essential everything else second hand including buggies

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also dishwashers at highest temp sterilise bottles - mum of 3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A swing is very necessary but stay away from that god aweful Mommaroo. A highchair is a big helper but can be bought later and 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

a changing table is a game changer. That is about it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

All of this true. My remark was towards all the "safety" crap, like cabinet locks and stove knob covers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the kid but for the most part they aren't. The outlet covers I would do. Kids can short out your TV and stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Change them on a mat on the floor - worked for us. My wife preferred it because you can't drop the kids if they're on the floor.
