Peaceful Resistance?

In Germany, many people wonder why there is not more violent resistance, especially against ICE. ICE agents who do not identify themselves give the impression of being a criminal gang. A country full of weapons and only peaceful protests, how can that be? Of course, violent resistance would be exactly what Trump wants in order to crack down even harder on his own people, even with military force, but would the military also take action against its own people?

what you didn't notice (or weren't allowed to see) was the ICE venture into Durham, NC. They were routed. Got their tires slashed. And they packed up and ran away the very next day. The resistance is here, and with force, you just won't be hearing it on TV.
ICE melts quickly in the South.

There's tons of violent protests, you just don't hear about them for two reasons: 1, they're not the kind of violence that ICE and Trump can spin as "evil" (when you hear about "violent protests" on the news it's almost always cops shooting at unarmed protestors). 2, the news media have a vested interest in downplaying the effectiveness of opposition to the status quo, the far right, and the US government. They did the same thing to MLK, claiming he was "violent" at the time and "peaceful" now.

The good thing is more and more people are actually standing up, and resisting non-violently. I see this leading to us kicking him out and never finishing his term, and that would be probably the best way. No more damage and no one else gets hurt.

Yes, this is a country full of weapons, but the type of people who have the weapons are not the people protesting

ICE “agents” hiding their identity means that anyone, ANYONE, can buy fake gear online and pretend to be law enforcement and they do and are.

When you see peaceful protest in the media, what you don’t see is that there are armed counter protestors drawn to these demonstrations and they are just waiting for anyone to get violent so they can have an excuse to play vigilante

America hates property damage, and people are scared to fight ICE.

I'm going to start cheerleading more of our American friends and family trying to right this ship. It's okay to be tired and to briefly rest, but giving up is what these fuckers want! Whatever the opposite of "Keep Calm and Carry On" is for the US, do that. I think it's a sort of "Anger to Passion to Action!"

America is not violently resisting this because most of us agree with what is going on, and we want to make certain the whole world knows that we fully agree with what is going on. Violent resistance is something we would only do if the government tried to provide us with healthcare, or housing policy that kept rents down.

its mostly that we are up against the worlds largest and most well funded military which makes individual actions nearly meaningless and a government who has violently rooted out all methods of community organization

Because military and law enforcement will actually just totally kill us.

Yes, they will open fire on civilians

They have done it before and they will do it again.

Nothing will change until we outlaw the Evangelical Antichrist worship that is going on in this country. No more freedom of religion, no more religion at all!

That's pretty much exactly it. The US military is, and always has been, primarily Right-Wing, ever since we started having a formal military. So they're highly likely to do what their Orange Fuhrer wants without objection.

And a violent resistance would be the fastest way for him to declare Martial Law (not that he hasn't already tried declaring it, but even the corrupt government he leads isn't willing to do that when there's no violence. That's why they keep trying to start violent riots.

In response to the question at the end, I'd guess more likely than not. USA is not unlike a banana republic under Trump and to some degree, long before his presidency. This famous photo is from the Kent State massacre about half a century ago.

Never forget. Our national guard murdered kids at their school because they asked nicely if the government could please stop murdering innocent people. This land has ALWAYS been evil.

The average american has little tolerance for rioting. Yes, violent resistance would get the attention of the powerful faster, but it would lose us the broad-spread support of the people. You do not want us to lose this fight.

Canadian here, I think the suggestion is less "rioting", more "QRF"

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I dunno mate, if some masked goon tried to shove my neighbour into an unmarked car I would beat the shit out of them

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But aren't you kind of already losing? I'm not american, but all i see is ICE doing this, ICE doing that, and no one stopping them. Who is supposed to be stopping this?

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The main place they are being fought (and to some extent stopped) is in the courts. For example, the federalization of national guard troops to help ICE in raids is widely considered illegal and is being successfully challenged in almost every city where they’ve been deployed. Judges are recognizing that due process rights are being violated, and are doing the best to keep people from slipping through the cracks. There’s just such a huge volume though.

It's more than that. Even among the people who are empathetic and leftist, it's not directly affect them so they don't need to take violent actions. They aren't coming for my family - and we all understand that it's *yet* - but to.move to violence against another human being is a line to cross, and if the threat is not in your face directly it's a hard line to cross. Add to that most people in this country can barely make ends meet, can barely pay rent or put food on the table (1\?)

When would have families they don't want to put at risk, and can't afford basics, how can they find energy to plan, the money to pay for weapons (even molotovs cost money they don't have) and when they can't find time to connect with others when they can't even find time for themselves. Fear makes everyone understand they can't win by themselves... And we're so downtrodden and beat by the capitalist engine that we don't have the ability to organize (2\?)

Until it becomes so bad that the choice for the a mass of people is die due to starvation or die due to fascist weapons, all at the same time, there won't be organized violent resistance. Until there are food riots in the street, or similar. And the Facists know this. They're carefully bouncing around the country pushing up the fear level without letting it get to a dry tinder status.

For those in the EU with a higher quality of living you have the time to think (3\?)

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And time to understand. Most of us here in the states don't (4\4)

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, you see, the plan is genius.

Don't do anything to actually stop them, and let them do all the evil, fucked up, and violent shit they want. Because if you DO try to stop them, they'll do all the evil, fucked up, and violent shit they want.

Don't you GET it, man? #ThisFrogKillsFascistsForRealGuys

That’s what i asked. No hope that the executive branch will turn against the orange monster?

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Nope, he's put sycophantic cronies into all the positions that could/would do it. Military included (they're gleefully and willfully murdering innocent fishermen at his command).

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Because that's what these actions are designed to provoke. If we give in to the provocation to commit violent resistance, it gives the regime the justification to declare martial law and strip us of all our rights entirely. This is outlined in Project 2025.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Okay but.. is peaceful protests working? I'm not american, so i only know what i see on the news, but all i hear is ICE doing this and ICE doing that and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Peaceful protests work when you have someone to convince, who are you convincing, because the republicans don't seem to care.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually, yes. The regime is looking impotent, overreacting. Democrats had a huge electoral blowout early this month in an off-election year when normally no one shows up. So far it's working. We're not out of the woods yet, but the Felon's "strong man" act is falling apart and our military leadership is clearly signalling they're not on board with assisting him with another one of his coup attempts. So until we're out of options, non-violent protest is the way to go.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are waiting, hoping, wishing that we get violent.

This is not France. In the US, police, national guard, and military will absolutely start killing civilians. In addition, there are still vast numbers of his supporters who will also be glad to have a chance to pretend to be vigilantes and shoot people.

If we were to start protesting violently, the media would not call us protestors, they would call us rioters and looters. They would pretend our action was not political at all

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But whats the alternative? If peaceful protesting doesn't work, how long do you wait? How long before its too late to do anything? I don't know the answers, this isn't a gotcha question.. I just don't know what i'd do in their place.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If the government is 100% willing to roll over and do nothing, it’s honestly already too late on a national scale.

Small community action like ICE harassment is effective and sets a better example.

This is kind of a grassroots hearts and minds situation at this point and a giant violent faceless mob to hate will not help

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I guess if you just keep it local its not as dramatic for the news

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The scary part is nearly half the country WANTS what is happening to continue and accelerate. They are too dumb, ignorant, or both to understand that not only are they going to be next on the list at some point. That the acts and actions of this administration affect basically every aspect of of the every day citizen. It's well established that the policies being enacted do not benefit anyone that isn't a multimillionaire or better.

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

It's nowhere near half. Trump got about 50% of votes in an electio with about 60% vote%, so it's closer to 30%. Many Trump voters are now disenfranchised. The sentiment you see online defending Trump is mostly bots, about 2/3 MAGA posts are botted trollfarm shit.

The real number is closer to 20%-25% of Americans.

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Well that’s the 20-25% with the highest rate of gun possession

One person with twenty gus isn't more effective than one person with two.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only need one to open fire on protestors

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because that’s what the administration wants in order to justify more force, etc

Do you really think roughing up some ICE agents will change anything other than severe repercussions against peaceful protesters and others?

We need more protests and more people to vote.

4 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Do you really think peaceful protests are doing anything to disrupt or oppose ICE? ICE is defeated by violent harassment, to the point they've been evicted out of multiple cities thanks to violent harassment and opposition

ICE pulled out of LA 4 months ago, so yes, they did work. How's that "waaaaaa we can't do anything to oppose fascism because daddy Trump will declare martial law" plan working out for you?
