I was so close to getting the job

It's a quick story, but my gf works as a runner at a production house in NYC. Her supervisor asked her if she knew anyone who'd be interested in some jobs openings they had. GF recommended me, and a couple friends. I interviewed, and was told that my resume was very well rounded, I had all the necessary experience for the position. I had aspirations and motivations which could help me move up in the company. Then the next week, when the hiring manager came back from vacation, GF's supervisor told her that I couldn't be hired because we're dating. I haven't even been told personally. They just went through my gf. I'm a bit bummed as I've applied to literal dozens of places throughout NYC and in the past year and a half, I've only had three interviews, after which I'm never contacted again. It's pretty depressing.

Kill her in front of the hiring manager. Shows dedication to the job. They'll love it.

There are thousands of job recruiters/agencies in NYC...find a good one and I guarantee you'll find a job!

Or they just didn't want you to feel bad that they don't think you can can the job?

That's rough, buddy. I'd buy you a beer if I could.

It won't be good for the job or your relationship. You just have to accept that

Your girlfriend doesn't know her own company's policies?

She wasn't sure. We tried regardless but was hopeful. She's just an entry level employee so never really had to look in depth to the policy

Call up the hiring manager, show initiative, make him know if wouldn't be a problem.

Yeah I'm asking my gf to ask the hiring manager if I can do a trial run and prove myself before officially being hired or if it's a HR rule.

If it's HR, then nothing can be done.

Yeah, should have kept the relationship a secret. It's really stupid, but that's the system for you.

We tried. But GF's coworker saw my resume and said out loud "oh hey isn't that X's boyfriend?" Sigh

"Woman, make me a sandwich." has never been more paradoxical.

Ha!

Hate to say it, but it's likely for the best for your relationship. Working with your S.O. can turn really ugly, even if you are careful.

My wife kept trying to get me to apply at the company she worked and I refused, then found out we'd be in different buildings/departments.

Yeah. GF and I would be in the same department for a bit, but she's transitioning to be a lighting artist and I would be going to production

Yeah. Part of me is worried about that. But the other part thinks 4+ years of dating and living together for a while would let us be mature

I've been married for 10 years and dating beyond that. It's the inevitable collusion of professional and personal lives that's the problem.
