...because I learned it the hard way :/

While I'm not the most sociable person (although I've heard people claim otherwise), after a stressful week of moving house and being preoccupied with all sorts of things, I was really looking forward to this little event where I'd finally see a group of friends and bond over a mutual interest we have. Little did I know that while I was stuffing my face with KFC, all hell was breaking loose upon me.

It started with a notification on my tablet that I've logged in from a new device. I kinda ignored it, 'cuz I had pretty much just turned my 3g internet on and I thought it might be referring to that. Next thing I know, my telephone receives a text message, saying my 20$ payment just went through and almost immediately the people from my old bank called me to ask about a suspicious activity. At this point everything starts to turn and I ended up changing my google settings to request a second authentication through my tablet. That worked for about five minutes until the fucker went in and turned it off again. I won't fall into too much details, but I ended up calling my bank to block both my debit and credit cards, because I had even my bank account login info in there and he was obviously inside the banking account and was trying to make transactions to purchase bitcoins... The only reason he couldn't succeed was that transactions require a code to be completed and that code ends up being sent on my phone. My sweet, sweet qwerty keyboard phone who can barely run itself, let alone connect to the internet properly. Bless his little old ass soul <3
By the time we were leaving the place, I was pretty confident that this would be the end of it...
Nope! Got a call from a hidden number. That piece of shit even used a voice changing app and threatened me that if I want my accounts back, I have to give him a google code he's about to receive, otherwise I'll be dealing with police at my door every evening... Because he had that too. My old address was stored there, but I thought I would spare him the details of me moving just a few days ago. As soon as that code beeped into my ear, I closed the phone and dialed the emergency hotline, asking for help. They redirected me to the nearest precinct which then escalated to another visit this morning, this time to the cybercrimes unit... And of course, nothing much happened off of there. They did give me useful advice on how to start regaining control over my accounts and I have already began to work on that. But it's slow and frustrating... Not to mention scary, because I keep thinking he might end up getting in, even if all passwords are now new and even ore complex.

For some reason, he changed my name in multiple accounts. None of the names he left were real, of course, but it also makes me wonder why he even bothered.

My biggest issue with this whole ordeal, however, is the fact that he is STILL trying to get into my email. I'm guessing he's using some sort of software, because the attempts are every 5 minutes. To the second!!

Too bad for him he's not very smart and he left his actual IP address in there.
I'm going to the police tonight to file a complaint.

Wish me luck!

And if you wanna get some wisdom out of all of this:
Don't store passwords on your computer and maybe use two-step authentication.

Sorry for the wall of text, but every time I refresh the login history of my email, I freak out every time a new attempt appears and I just wanted to let this all out.

Stinky bun tax. I don't have a cat.

Dang, you have bitcoin money. BALLER

Oh well, at least you get some Stinky later....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sucks, bro. Good thing you caught on though!

That sounds like a matter for the FBI rather than local police.

I love 2 step. After my ex stole my CC and debit card on his way out the door I set it up for everything including my spam mail account.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, no offense but your ex was an ass... Did you seek any legal action?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No I was stupid and let his mom pay me back in return for not reporting him. It still took its toll on my credit score and I should have.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The one time the banks aren't total scum bags is when they prevent people from stealing your money with the suspicious activity alerts.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Your credit card was used in "Organic health food store" this is suspicious.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had something like that happen, it was through a game I played someone I has in my friend list bragged about hacking my account which (c)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me 2k$ over night to my second account, thats how the idiot was caught.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always 2 factor

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope this guy isn't using a VPN, OP, or you will literally never find him.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bunny > cat

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone got me last year, but it was only game accounts that had no CC info. I never save that shit. People are assholes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always always always turn on two factor auth for anything that offers it... Also that is an adorable evil you got there.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You should've left his IP up, for reasons

I’m more impressed you have a QWERTY keyboard phone than anything

I use a blackberry PRIV, love the keyboard.

I miss my slideout keyboard, was glorious for running SNES games.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two Factor Authentication, OP. It would have protected you here. It will also give you dramatically more security for your email.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bruh, stop using Gameloft1 as a pass.

You're not my real mom! :D

Yes, they're my favourite! :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two step verification. Go into all accounts and log off of everywhere. Change passwords to complex with different lengths. Freeze credit

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

All has been done by now. I'm still pretty terrified, even though supposedly I should be safe now. Might re-install my computer tonight

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Definitely FREEZE CREDIT. Don't waste a nickel on credit monitoring.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Definitely, grab your documents and wipe your drive, pay an IT friend if you have to, a decent tech can preserve more, %appdata% caches, etc

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Just happened to me. Scary stuff, seeing other people have logged into your email. Get a good VPN, antivirus and encryption. Nothing is safe

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Not even the antivirus software! For users who can tell if something is malware it might be safer not to not use them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where should we store passwords?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Storing a password takes a chance on someone finding it. Just remember, the easier it is for you to log in, the easier it is for them.

Don't be happy if he leaves you alone. You can rest assured he'll be terrorising someone else. Be happy when you nail the bastard!

Update us bro

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

doot

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You skipped the firswt part of the story ... how did that scumbag get your login information?!?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

honestly - no idea... i think it was because my email was very very old and the password was weak. he could easily get to my gmail acc from-

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

-there.. and i really hope that is the case, cuz it means everything would be secure now. but it also means the mistake was entirely mine

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Were you storing your other passwords in a google doc? Or was getting into you email all it took to start resetting them?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Google has an option to save my pw... And I used that constantly, meaning anyone that logs into my acc on another computer gets that info

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ah!!! Glad I never use that! I use Dashlane as a PW manager, may be better ones out there now.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I hope they kill him

send him to the gulag

You really went from 0 to 100 on that one

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Normally I'd never wish ill on a person... However not gonna lie, I really hope very awful things happen to this person.

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

They deserve the worst

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every action requires an equal and opposite reaction... So castration or decapitation, either will do I think

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Either way he loses a head

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd think of removing his hands instead. They're what he used to commit the crime, after all.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used his head to think of the crime though

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Iraq they would cut the hand off a thief. Everyone knew from then on what you did.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Man, one accident with a woodchiper and suddenly your a social pariah

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry, I read the last two words somehow as "sociopath" really changed the meaning

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cutting one bit or another. Huh

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can't tell you the number of times some jackhole from China has tried to logon to my steam, Facebook, and gmail

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

Someone keeps trying to hack into an old yahoo account i had. I never even used it and it's like meh keep wasting time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, same! But they never succeeded... This guy is a whole different story however. :/

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Don't worry about the complexity of the password. More strength comes from the length of the password. I prefer to use run on sentences.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

..but you should also add special characters to that to aid in it's strength. Using 2 factor authentication also helps if allowed....

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Some people through social engineering can sometimes get a cloned SIM card and compromise accounts.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Special characters reduce strength. Letters are 8b, special characters are 7, nums are 4

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I use passwords that are 14 characters or longer and have a cap, number, and special characters. It's worked either through dumb luck or str

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I changed my Steam password 2 days ago, and just got an email an hour ago about someone trying to log in with the correct password.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm glad I have 2 factor authentication on it, but still...kinda fucking weird.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Happened to me on a Steam Acc I forgot i even had - they were only stopped by the code sent to email. Pw I used was a known compromised one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine is set up with mobile authentication and new log ins require a code from my e mail

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That's how mine is set up, too. But I've changed my password on multiple occasions and I still get these emails saying someone used the

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct password. And I know my PC isn't infected with anything either. It's extremely fishy.
