The thing about the gear wars is that many people don't know about the gear wars. The gear wars is the gear peoples' history and i bet my...

These gears get the gears turning in your head, also.

I just wanted to take a break from studying for my dynamics midterm.... why would you do this to me???

TIL mechanical engineering is, largely, knowing how to make use of something that spins around.
ImInYourMind
This kind of thing would normally get me going. Must be having an off day.

I'm pretty sure Jamie Hyneman already knows how these work.
tesseract4d2
the one with the bike chain looking thing is a simplified version of the mechanism used to chamber rounds in a MK38 25mm machine gun.
tesseract4d2
this one I mean.
planefreak
I get turned on by these...

Cranks for sharing your pinions!
nicholasagream
Cool but I think a few are over engineered or physically impossible (assumed things would happen due to gravity but couldn’t in practice)
Namotatop
That pump one just explained my childhood
MojoBobtheHoochyman
I don't see the utility of the fan-shaped projections in 1 and 3. Nice animations though.
uitSCHOT
it's to keep the other part steady, if the fan issn't there it can rotate slightly and jam the mechanism
uitSCHOT
same with this one: all three are based on the geneva drive, mostly found in old skool projectors
igniteice
Boy these besieged graphics have really changed
limeyptwo
Some of these only work efficiently with magic frictionless gears.
Niggorai
This reminds me of Fallout for some reason
LapisSea
WOW! this has proven to be a great test of my physics engine! What's the conclusion? It sucks ass and needs fixing xD

If this gives you a woody, then Mechanical Engineering might be for you. (Wish these were around when I was in college)

Dear god I’m happy I didn’t major in engineering

#10 TIL how a water pump works
Elminst
Older ones don't have the blue flap. gotta pump fast to get the air out to build up the initial vacuum.
etcnotect
The only problem with this design is that it would freeze the line when it's below freezing
CziltangBrone
If you add a 'weep hole' the priming water drains back, so the pump won't freeze
Sh4dowWalker96
So THAT'S how a hand pump works!
playstation360
Some of these are real and useful mechanisms. For some, the mechanical stresses make me say OHGODWHY!?

i was just thinking about this....

Yeah, some of these just look cool in simulation but wouldnt really work irl

I'm glad I'm good with computers, because I am so mechanically inept. I'm amazed that people can think like this, and make these things.
CrossBetween
My thoughts exactly +1

You're welcome. We math good. Not English best.
H4cksx0r
you forget that the bases of computation are precisely this class of mechanisms
SuperBeetle76
I think the same way! I’m a database developer but I can’t understand how people know what shapes to design for a given outcome
blooregardqkazoo
Good CAD software makes it very intuitive. Solidworks is so ergonomically designed I feel like I could build anything.
mysticmalevolence
Ha!
speedstorm
I would marry solidworks if I could. Such a cool software.
SteevyT
It crashed so many fucking times on me today. Hell, it's error reporting dialogue fucking crashed on me.
Daphault1
Have you ever used Inventor? Just curious about you thoughts comparing the two if you have?
speedstorm
I do enjoy working with Inventor but I find that SW just has a better flow of work. But I have to admit the price is way better on Inv.
BigAdam
Better than Fusion360? I started with sketchup and 360 makes me feel like I'm trying to paint a rock with a slightly more pointy rock.
blooregardqkazoo
There's a reason the license is ~7k
SkepticMech
So much better. I tried to convince myself to tackle the learning curve from SW to Fusion, 6 months later and still way slower/more annoying
OliverClothesoff70
Me too! I'm an EE so I'm great with amps & volts, 1s & 0s, but mechanical design fascinates me. I wish I could envision designs like these.
VioletJoy
The key is that many mechanical designs are simpler designs added together and modified. Imagine starting someone (1/2)
VioletJoy
on the last level of a difficult puzzle game vs from the beginning. You develop the skill and the visualization over time. (2/2)

ME here. I build 30+ T magnets. We employ zero electrical guys, because it's all DC and simple as fuck, but stresses are HUGE. Fun fact:
ImgursLibertarian
when we ramp our coils the stress changes the inductance. Thus: v = Ldi/dt + idL/dt. and other shit like that.
ImgursLibertarian
we store ~ 50kJ in stress, and ~8MJ in field.
getmo
8 Megajoules? Is... is that a lot?
