Yes, tardigrades are the new fashion accessory of the scientific community -mmkay. I mean look at the little cute, cuddly microscopic creatures. There are 1,200 species that have taken over our planet. It’s too late to run. False colored scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photo de Eye Of Science/Science Photo Library.

Or downright terrifying in the electron image by [ThermoFisher] FEI. Look at those gnashing lil teeth. Like miniature dinosaurs - except they can survive in space. Ooh. Dr Who needs an episode of monster tardigrades in space! But I digress...

What most of us haven’t seen widely spread in social media are their little eggs. These studded domes must have seriously hurt. So these eggs of many land-based tardigrades have bumps, dimes, spines, filaments. This is a false colored SEM image.

A recent paper found another species called Macrobiotus shonaicus; or Spike. These have party streamers (mom and dad had a fun day). https://www.sciencenews.org/article/new-species-tardigrade-lays-eggs-covered-doodads-and-streamers

Tardigrade egg under phase contrast light microscopy at 400x (a/b) and 1,000x ;c-f). The shape and smoothness appear different than others in its genus. And thus the scientists have discovered a new species.

Science for the win. I wonder how many species are in your water supply? Allons-y.

Take a look at picture number 2, that’s what we’re dealing with when our nut sack itches.

I had some up on the microscope display for a lab, so I called one Major Tom and their homework was to list everything they can survive.

Tardigrades can survive desiccation by essentially turning their insides to a protective vitreous solid through overproduction of trehalose.

I know where this going, and its gonna involve two lesbians in a giant robot powered by GUTS and blowing up a bomb made out jupiter

Oh Em Gee this is AWESOME! I LOVE TARDIGRADES! And #3 makes me want to Photoshop fake mustaches onto multitudes of unsuspecting organisms :D

Fermi paradox settled.

They survive harsh conditions by filling their cells with Trehalose (a kinda sugar) and freeze-drying themselves. The sugar protects cells.

I used this technology two jobs ago to develop freeze-dried platelets. It's in human trials now. Wheee...

Born in the Jura region of France in 1822, this chemist went on to become the father of bacteriology. He collects Bunsen burners, 1/2

#2 is actually a deep ocean scale worm. They live near hydro thermal vents on the sea floor.

MRW I learn a research program called "Tardigrades in Space" or "TARDIS" launched Tardigrades into space:

Find your way home, little extremophiles.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

While tardigrades can survive in extreme conditions, they are not considered extremophiles.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Don't be an extremophobe

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they nearly deserve the title though with the ability to survive in space and all

only for so much time

I think the study done was 10 days. The dehydrate and curl into their bodies. It’s a neat process. Or they’re just zombies.

Missing a set of legs there...

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I want that on a t shirt. Do you know the artist?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s me. I am aware it’s missing two legs. The shirt is on cottonbureau if you search “cottonbureau tardigrade”. Thanks! :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't think anyone is crediting the artist. You shouldn't have any problems if it's just for your one shirt.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Nobody ever does. But any income from shirt sales from credit literally helps me buy groceries. I’m @ sarahmckayart on IG.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

you should consider adding a watermark...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

If I could go back in time, I would. I drew the original design long ago, but have since made it into a shirt. All I can do is comment.
