First boot of computer after being shut down.

After restart. I don't understand why the overlay goes away.

I do not have the key from my legal purchase of Windows 8 a couple years ago. So I don't really know what to do.

Download magic jellybean, it finds all of your product keys so you can copy to a word document and print for future needs.

Just called, they were helpful. They took control of my PC, checked to see if my version was illegally downloaded, then gave me a new key.

How the hell do you get Microsoft customer service to be helpful? They're always useless when I need to talk to them

i mean, there's other ways to obtain keys for free if you ever forget

if you want to go through some hassle, call microsoft. if not, do not update your computer forever.

I seriously doubt it. It was from at least 2-3 years ago

Usually, yes. Also just use a tool to find your key.

(But assuming if you did a free upgrade to 10 then you won't have a key for 10 anyway, as it's tied to hardware, so... yeah)

The key it gave you might be for you previous Windows version (like WIndows 8) and is still valid if you call MS support.
