Nerded Out last night with friends and played some MTG... Just sharing another of my hobbies since last time I posted about Magic I got so many questions and folks talking about it in the comments! So, this time one of my Commander Decks is below!

I took a pic of my winning commander deck from one of the 4 Player rounds last night - I knocked everyone out by round six... Also yes... I know I play my lands weird...

What are some of y'all favorite commanders? My Ellivere is one of my strongest decks (right behind my evil Slivers), it's wild how quickly the aura enchantment system builds here.

I play an Astrid home brew I really like.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hi!
I only play Standard, but right now I'm loving my mono green deck, which I've named "Restless." The central combo involves Blossoming Tortoise, Badgermole Cub, and the WoE Restless lands "-Prairie" and "-Vinestalk."
Happy Gathering!

The last time I played paper Magic, commander didn't exist as a format, so... (I miss 90s MTG. Arena's great, but man, those were the days...)

*lays out Exodia and a 3 of Clubs* Go fish.

You’ve activated my trap card!

I only got into mtg because of the final fantasy set and I'm like aerith as a commander

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Aeris is pretty lackluster on her own, but I still run her in the 99 because best girl.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have so many decks and never get to play as much as I'd like...
My faves are a K'rrik Nazgûl deck, a Lily Bowen "World's Greatest Grandma" deck, a zombie tokens deck, a red garbage deck (with a Trashman Danny Devito art) and a deck with my face on a card from rk post.
To name a few...

Goddammit. The song, the SONG. It's in my head now.

Your mana placement is horrifying. However I know you're having fun, and that's all that matters.

Plaued magic for 20 years. I switched to sorcery tcg a couple years ago and never looked back

I’m going to go check that out because I’ve never heard of it and I’ve been on various flavors for cardboard crack for decades

The Ashley just hanging out wearing glasses and playing MTG might be cuter than cosplay Ashley.

2 months ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

Hard agree. Cuz something in my monkey brain highlights when I see certain creators in casual wear or looking comfy rather than in cosplay. Both are good, but this is gooder.

2 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Its just nice to see her happy.

Obviously she likes cosplaying and OF and stuff but theres a pressure to look a certain way, act a certain way.

Its nice to see her smiley and happy doing something else.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I perceive it as a difference between "seductive" and "comfy" rather than "pressured" and " happy". I won't presume their feelings, I'll just hoot n holler over certain pictures and hoot n holler a bit more for ones like these.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Well shes naturally seductive, and I dont think shes faking it when she does cosplay or anything, I just like to know that shes content and comfortable beyond that.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Haven't played since Mirrodin. I can't afford to anymore now that my wife and I are full-blown Lego addicts. Need a 6-figure salary to afford both. lol

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Proxies my guy. You can build 6 decks of whatever you want for like 140$ on makeplayingcards.

It appears to be the Mirabelle Lace-up Corset by House of CB, but maybe with the very top row not laced? https://poshmark.com/listing/House-of-CB-Mirabelle-Laceup-Corset-652303215d686bb7815f4a6a

Oh Ashley, that land usage will get in some people's heads lol. I always recommend Hakbal, who was an Ixalan precon. Been loving my Edgar Markov and Toph (experience counter version) decks too. I'm all about tribal usually

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ohh at this point I feel I need to play my land that way just to stir chaos...

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Lol keep em guessing. You get your preorder in for the next set?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol yup, lands have got me triggered. So much in fact, I think I will join you in the chaos and do that tonight so my friends can feel the pain. Much appreciated:)

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol, some people just wanna watch the world burn... I'm here for it.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your nails match your card sleeves. You ma'am have mtg night on slay. On arena I play a Vincent deck and enjoy it. Haven't been to local magic in a while.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey someone noticed!! 😂

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The board state in the first pic is from my Teval, the Balanced Scale deck btw... which is also insane lol

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Goes without saying!

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah I was about to point out that they're not the same deck because of the colors. Teval is easily one of the best pre cons from 2025.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I ended up only have to swap out about 12 cards and it sings like crazy!

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know a lot of people who are into it, and a friend taught me to play way back in high school, but I've forgotten most of it. I am interested in learning/playing, but I do NOT want to get back into collecting real cards. That shit gets expensive; I had enough of it back in the day with Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stopped playing before commander really took off (it was a play format early on but it wasn't officially recognised till later) so I never really got it. I recently looked into starting to play again but the knowledge gap from when I stopped (around Mirrodin, so 2003-2004) is too much for me to get on board with now lol. Plus the cost of cards and general WoTC scumminess doesn't really make me want to jump back in.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

honestly i just print them off on regular paper and sleeve them in cheap colored back sleeves. you can riffle shuffle easily and all it costs is ink and paper. there're high DPI images available for free at MPCFILL.com. You just need a decent laser printer. If you want, you can slide the printouts over a basic land for the firm card feeling. You can also have the images printed on real card stock from makeplayingcards.com if you want. I used to order lots of proxies from them.

Instead, play Star Trek CCG 2E: Better game, and it is free to play as a fan-run project following the bankruptcy of its original publisher.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I think you missed the subtext- Ashley pretty, Ashley like game, me play game, ?????, me hold hands with pretty Ashley.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Solution: Get Ashley to play Trek, enjoy that you're both participating in a community project set in a progressive world rather than supporting another morally-gray giant corporation, shake hands after a good game because you respect Ashley as a person and not just a sex object to drool over.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Join the cardboard crack club. In all seriousness, Lorwyn Eclipsed is coming out soon and the set seems pretty fucking cool.

2 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I signed up for pre-release the other day! Should be fun!

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's awesome! I've been teaching my wife how to play. She isn't quite ready for a pre-release yet.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My Mothman deck is nicely upgraded. Unfortunately, it is obviously the threat (and a bit slow if you are winning by turn 6).

Imodane, the Pyrohammer is my current favorite commander. Complete budget deck with barely any cards over $1. It's a red deck for blue players (filled with single target damage dealing instants and sorcerys).

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mothman is so fun to play against

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only thing I know about MTG is that Black Lotus cards are handy for painting car wheels.

2 months ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 2

Are you insane!?

They also make really good tokens if you use a badge making hole punch!

2 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Hot and plays Magic? Dangerous combo. You make my day!

Also, the deck I have fun with is a Captain America equipment deck.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Oooo that is fun 😄

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Another deck that’s a lot of fun is a food token deck built around Frodo and Sam, and playing Aetherflux Reservoir.

The hobbits of the shire have had it up to here with everyone and have effectively their own Death Star now. Very silly, lots of fun.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I uh. I hope that's not how you play your lands.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

😭 I have a friend who puts all her land in one pile in a corner and her command zone looks like the commander is on the field. Im glad to say, this looks more frightening.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Commander is so damn fun to play. I have a plagroup that accept proxies so It gets much cheaper 😁

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No good group would force non proxies. If you wanted to make a good br4/5 it would cost hundreds to thousands of dollars w.o proxies. Wizards has gotten wayyyyyy too greedy

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had an budget collection before, but I got bored playing the same few decks all the time. I wanted to proxy to try new decks. And I wanted to play some other less expensive cards. But this guy that have 1000€+ decks doesnt like the idea. They are salty at times too, so I left and sold my collection.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I felt that way at first because I didnt want my friends to all make giga-decks so I could just be more casual, but after realizing just how bad its got and how much money I was spending I completely changed my mind. We just started using bracket/power level system combined to balance gameplay and it works super well. Anyone can win, games can be fast or long based on bracket. Its good times. Mak">ds.com">Makeplayingcards.com + MPCfill.com and you can make 6 full high quality card stock decks for like 150$

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok cool. I asked q local printin company to print my cards in color in A4 paper, 0.5€ per paper. I cut them and place it above some common card.
Cost med about 6€ per deck. 😁

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a bit anal about my cards. I want them to be perfect 😂 but my friends do that too. They've also got matte photo paper printed ones and those feel flimsier but they shuffle fine. But anyway, fuck wizards and their insane greed lol. The FF hyper inflation was the last straw for me.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favourite commander is still Doran, the Siege Tower. Doesn't win often but trees is fun. My most recent powerful deck is a Zoraline deck that wins quite a lot.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I like to use Skithiryx personally.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ooo I will have to look into trees, never encountered them

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I used to get my ass handed to me by Doran in standard *all* the time.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My commander deck used to be old school standard and then I went "I'm just gonna take out 3 of everything and see what I can add"

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See the new one in Lorwyn?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep! I'm picking up my preorders Friday night, modifying my deck Saturday morning, and playing 4-way with my pod Saturday afternoon.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was going to order but the pre-orders I want are a bit pricey so I might wait for the prices to go down.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those unaware of Magic and how Commander games sometimes evolve into, here's a taste...

2 months ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 2

our tables ban infinite combinations.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, look, it's three of my favourite internet people

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Anyone unaware, this is Shuffle Up and Play from Tolarian Community College, featuring other prominent MTG youtber Spice8Rack. Both are excellent, Spice is the coolest thing on the planet.

2 months ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

I love Spice so much they’re one of my favorite lore and politics youtubers

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Spice is as good a magic content creator as there may ever be. The guy is passionate, smart and funny all at once

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

would love to see @Alsoashley at Shuffle Up & Play

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Commander has been taken over by people who like mtg but absolutely hate it when anyone gets to play.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, good news, in the clip they are playing Pauper, not Commander. And Spice had no idea what was in their deck before playing it, besides it being a Goblin deck.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The person I was replying to was using the clip as an example of how Commander goes sometimes.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Man whatever happened to just casting Channel and Fireball like a normal person?

2 months ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

Channel is banned... in pretty much every format. For very good reasons.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They printed Force of Will, man!

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The future is now, old man.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

My friend and I still get together to play old school. But we use decks of mostly stuff you find in those random packs at a dollar store.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the last time I really played was 4th edition. I still have 2 entire sets of ice age. I think i have 4 jesters caps.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know, right?! Here’s a great idea for a black deck: 20 plague rats and 20 black lotuses. Fucking unstoppable.

2 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 4

Need card draw.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Plus you are only allowed to have 4 cards of a kind if the card doesn't say otherwise

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Artifacts that exile a card into the cloning zone.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

there are lots of ways around this by negating damage (Tafari's protection *eye roll* for example)

but what is very annoying about this play is that it's really difficult to interrupt because the sac is an activation payment of a mana ability.

2 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

combos like that are why I'm glad i held on to a Humility to use

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Ya, and it wouldn't be great for this specific example, but a Suture Priest https://scryfall.com/card/nph/25/suture-priest is always nice against recursion, or wide decks.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been a while since I played, but the way I read the rulings on Putrid Goblin, a Suture Priest would work perfectly assuming you had more life than the opponent who starts a loop like this since it goes to the graveyard then comes back as a new creature.
https://gatherer.wizards.com/MH1/en-us/101/putrid-goblin

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya, I forgot what they were using as a damage outlet and thought it could target creatures. So ya, it certainly would be an issue for Mr. infinite mana -> dmg. IMO swing-wide and recursion are such popular infinite combos, it's a good idea to include one if you're playing white, kind of like Pyro Blast if you're playing red. Hard to carve out a slot in the 99, but more worth it than not.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wouldn't it though? because with humility out, it cancels out both creatures effects, including the persist

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

oh for sure, Humility changes the whole game around.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't Kyle Hill prove that MTG is Turing complete? 🤔

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He showcased a paper, don't think he did it (alone)

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah, OK. I remember seeing the video, I don't remember the details. Thank you for chiming in.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's definitely cheating there, you can do it an unlimited number of times, not an infinite number.

2 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 9

I mean, you can do it an arbitrarily large number of times, so saying it isn’t infinite is just pedantry. Everyone at the table understands what is meant by “infinite mana.”

He also isn’t cheating as endless loops are covered by the rules: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Loop

2 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Just a heads up, don't use fandom, it's no longer used / updated properly. Use >mtg.wiki instead. https://mtg.wiki/page/Loop

2 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Or just, never use fandom. It's always shit compared to the real wikis.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

100% agreed.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s not technically an infinite loop as he has to choose to target and sacrifice the goblin with persist every time it comes back from the graveyard. The other players could be cheeky and make him physically move the card back and forth from the graveyard and the battlefield to actually generate each red mana until he has the amount he needs to deal enough damage to each other player.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

So your argument is that unless he touches the card, the infinite mana can't exist?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pedantry based on the rules. infinity within magic the gathering doesn't exist, so the player with an indefinite loop has to choose an arbitrary number of repetitions. an infinite loop is also a more specific thing where with neither players input, a repeating set of actions continuously reoccur; in these circumstances if neither player can stop the loop, then the game ends in a draw. an easy example of an infinite loop is 3 oblivion rings played in a row with no other possible targets.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Iirc rules are that you can demonstrate a loop and then say how many times you would like to do it. So when he says an "infinite number" its not acceptable, but when he says he will deal " 5 trillion damage", you could extrapolate the amount of times he would have to do the loop to and assume he had completed it.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This is how I recall the rules, too. You can pick any arbitrarily large number you like, but you can't actually have "infinite" mana.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It's been years if not a couple decades since I've played, but are you able to use the activated abilities of tapped creatures now?
It's hard to see but at about nineteen seconds in, it looks like Skirk Prospector is sideways to indicate being tapped.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

tap now has a dedicated symbol for abilities that require it [this change was like, ice age, but I dont think the portal sets had the tap symbol for some reason]; skirk prospector doesnt require being tapped to activate its ability

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah, the arrow thing? That's been around a while, I still played for a couple years or so after it was introduced.
And after a bit of searching, it looks like an activated ability of a tapped creature *can* be used per Rule 602.5a even though it does not explicitly say that.
Which feels to me like a change from how it used to be, but I could be wrong.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think you are misremembering an old rule about artifacts, where *their* abilities didn't work while they were tapped. But that's a *very* old rule.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You might be right, but I believe that rule comes from when "Mono Artifact" was a thing, too ... which is very, very old.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
