awesome pic
American adventure photographer Mike Mezeul II took an amazing shot that captures the diverse beauty of Mother Nature. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, it contains the Moon, the Milky Way, a meteor, and a stream of lava all in one image.
“I was literally in shock,” he told The Huffington Post. “It was my third frame to shoot after the sun had set, and after I saw the meteor, I knew I couldn’t beat that image, so I packed it up and headed back.”
Mike hiked about 13 miles and had only a few seconds to shoot because there was a huge risk of getting burned: “Some of the most extreme landscape I’ve ever been.” For all photography geeks who are interested in the technicalities, he used a Nikon D810 body and Nikkor 14-24mm lens at ISO 2500, f/2.8, and 25 seconds.

Yes it is photoshopped. No it's not fake. The contents of the photo do exist as-is. But you can NOT see this with the human eye. aka HDR.

Is this even possible? The brightness of the moon alone is enough to ruin any decent shot of the milkyway.

This is going to be one hell of a prog rock album.

All that's missing is a few wolves howling.

I think you meant mother fucking dragons.

I would love to know how the moon didn't wash out the milky way. That is what happens every time I try to photograph it... advice welcome!
anuragsins1991
ND filters ?
ClimbingUpTheWalls
You can check out a moon calendar online and try to shoot the Milky Way on a night with no moon. The Milky Way is also more prominent in the

summer of you live in the northern hemisphere
somethingwittythedoctorsays
Good idea. But how did this photo capture both the moon and milky way? Separate exposures?

The photographer missed their calling as a geologist.

Have you ever been to the volcano? Lava doesn't flow very fast, more like molasses and under the crusty part.
SensualMeatball
One could say they are the same thing. That would be overly philosophical though.

I see amazing photos like these & then think "that can't be possible without a ton of Photoshop." Am I wrong? I hope so.
NeatoBuilds
Not a ton, but almost every single photographer uses PS or lightroom, photos straight out of camera in RAW format need tunning
NeatoBuilds
This looks like he lowered the highlights so you can see the lava or else it would be way too bright at a 25sec shutter

Children. He used 25 children to cross the lava river
Photofaggins
He used an exposure of 25 seconds which is quite impressive since with the heat from lava and having the shutter open didn't cause damage.

The only way of getting both the moon and the Milky Way properly exposed
JamesBondMegacorn
So would the lava just be really dark? Also wouldn't that be on tripod too?
Iammoney45
Anything longer than fractions of a second should be on a tripod no matter how steady your hand is, you will move over that time.
DontKirisuteMyHeart
Look up 'reciprocal rule' for photography for more info
seemill
We visited a dark sky park, I'm not sure how you get moon and milky way in the same pic, it's SUPER bright.
Perkunas687
My first thought as well, moon more than 50% full is bright, at 100% even more so. Took a moon night shot, only saw constellation nearby.

Definitely.

I'm guessing either a lens filter or stacking. Also being able to use high ISO helps

Same thoughts, with the moon out you cannot capture the milky way without radial blur from the rotation of the Earth's axis.
YertIeTheTurtle
Layers.
Virtika
.......wot? Does the moon being out somehow increase the rotational speed of the earth..?
tjsutton
Definitely overplayed a few photos together to get this shot. In long exposures moon is way too bright to get the Milky Way that well
justmoral
The clouds have very minor blur to them as well. Should have a hell of a lot more.
attackcat
clouds also move more than what is visible here. moon is plausible. you can even see the light clipping on the edge what happens when (1/3)
attackcat
you over exposure, and bring it down to the point where you run out of sensor dynamic capabilities. also the meteor looks weird as (2/3)
attackcat
the bright part isn't the other end, but in the middle (satellite+ps). foreground 4-10s exposure, probs with moon. rest with 25s (3/3)
Virtika
Nah. Here's a straight out of camera JPG of both the MW and the moon in one shot from my backyard: http://imgur.com/Q0UcBNo

A 14mm lens can expose for up to 42 seconds without causing star trails using the 600 rule.
TygrF
30" = 30 sec exposure?
plop69
Edit that up! It'll look solid I think! Bit of cloning for the wires bottom left but easy stuff. Where was this?

Man, to live in an area without light pollution... I'm surrounded by greenhouses. The sky is permanently orange at night.
Virtika
Oh, and i'm located down the bottom of Australia on a little island named Tasmania. Very spoiled down here with almost no light pollution!
plop69
Wow, rad image! Lucky to have that dark sky! Do you have an Instagram? @christiantisdale is mine, I've got a bunch of Milky Way stuff!
