Not sure what I ever did to deserve such a patient cat. We got Opal and Sapphire when I was 8. Sapphire was my mom's. I held Opal in my arms so much as a child that she often demanded to be held later in life. More than once I had to cook one handed while holding her with the other arm.

Sapphire on the left, and my baby Opal on the right. They used to be so much darker.

They were nearly inseparable before we lost Sapph to a kidney failure in 2010.

Mom thinks I anthropomorphized her, but I swear she smiled. Sometimes. Not all the time.

They found a mass on Opal's tongue in March. Things went downhill fast from there. She's stoned on painkillers here.

Stoned again. But she purred whenever I moved. And when I handed her over to my mom she actually looked at me and followed me with her gaze as I moved around.

In the last month or so of her life my parents got horribly sick so I had to avoid the house. They both caught the flu and then pnuemonia. Then when they started to feel better, I got strep and a cold. Still needed to see my baby though.

We didn't give her any painkillers they day we put her down. She wasn't as agitated as normal and we wanted to have her alert when we said goodbye.

This is our last picture before they put the iv in her.
I've lost pets before but I was never there when they went. They were mom's, or my step dad's. Opal was the first pet I ever had that was mine. Just mine. She was my emotional support before I ever heard the word depression. My sleep problems started when I joined the military and left her. The vet gave us 2-3 months after we found the mass but she was ready to go in one.
My heart hurts.

I lost my cat Ruby within two hours. She went very suddenly. My heart goes out to you. Losing a pet is awful

I feel your pain. Had exactly the same bond with my cat. Even got her when I was 8, too. Cry when you need to- don't hold it in. Much love2u

Aw shit OP. I dread losing my little man boots. It's gonna kill me. People tell me I'm mad but I swear he smiles at me when I stroke him.

She usually smiled in sunbeams or on heating pads.

My heart hurts for you sweetie, your baby is frolicking with lions and lambs, rest assured you will see her again!

And most importantly, she's with her sister again.

Man, I made the same face holding my bunny as he drifted off to sleep. Still can't not cry saying it. I'm sorry for your loss. Hold on xx

I lost my chunk to kidney failure, it came so quick. I felt like I lost every good part of me with her. I hope it gets better soon. <3

I was honestly not expecting the amount of empathy and sympathy I have received since breaking down in the middle of the night and 1/2

posting this. Thank you, all. It's nice to know I'm not alone. 2/2

It's so hard to hold them as they go, but they deserve us in there with them. You did the right thing. I'm so sorry.

Your face says it all. I think you should bring a new cat into your life.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I will, after I've had some time to mourn her. It's too weird not having any cats left.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost this goof ball 2 years ago and we miss him still.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Such a gorgeous goofball! I'm sorry for your loss as well.

Sorry OP :( I just got my first cats and its only a year in and I couldn't imagine losing them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, so sorry. RIP

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bid you peace and catnip.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know, oddly enough our Siamese never cared for catnip. But Sapphire would play fetch for paper balls if my mom threw them.

There is nothing like the love of a good Meezer. I am glad that you had so many good years with her (hugs).

Poor sweet girl. I'm so sorry. As a cat mom of three I can imagine how horrible it feels. Hugs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know EXACTLY how you feel all too well. It's SO HARD to say good-bye to your best friend.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My cat is somewhere north of 20, older than my youngest sister, and he's on his way out. I know the feeling.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're making me tear up here OP. I'm so sorry for both you and Opal. A pet for so long tends to feel like a close family member & its hard

9 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 0

Personally, my pets are closer to me than most of my family.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not just 'feel like'... it is. sorry for your loss op :C

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have had and lost so many pets, it never gets easier. But they leave a hole in your heart, that needs to be filled, and that's how you 1/2

Find the next little life that needs love. We out live our pets, so that we can love multiples. Im speaking as a recently heartbroken person

Lost my own kitty of 14 on Xmas, still makes me misty eyed at times. Won't help the loss, but I'm sure she lived & was loved well throughout

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm so sorry. Losing a pet around xmas is an extra gut punch. :(

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still feels like a joke in terribly bad taste, but I can't imagine its be much better or worse than any other time. Hugs to ya, OP.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And to you.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am so sorry for your loss :(

Thank you

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm so sorry. Losing a long time pet is devastating, especially when you've grown up with them.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I was not expecting such an out pour of empathy when I broke down and posted this last night. It helps a bit.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That last picture is heartbreaking. I'm really sorry for your loss OP

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Thank you. I was trying not to cry on her. She always hated when I cried.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

So important you were with her at the end. I know how hard it is, but it's so important to be there for them

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When she started to get arthritis while I was still in high school I told my mom I needed to be there if it was time. It was hard, but 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was never a question in my mind that I would be there letting her know she was loved when she needed to go.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry for your loss OP, all cat owners dread the day that our furry friends pass.

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 4

I cant. Its one of the only things that truly makes me cry when i think about it...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

Also pre feel your pain. I have six of the furry bastards.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They're the best kind of furry bastards though. My family had 4 at one point. Opal was the last to go.

Get a new bundle of joy. It's like a new adventure every time I've either adopted or fostered. My wife and I wonder who's gonna go first...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The oldest or the fatest.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My step dad's apparently already talking about puppies but my mom and I are still in mourning. And we already have a dog so we want the 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

But isn't it great that you had her during your awkward teen years and you had something to get through the depression ? I'm thankful for it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had her through my awkward teen years and through moving countries (again) and through every break-up I've ever had. I will always be 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

grateful for her. 2/2
