11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Who knew Chris Evans could draw

I think this is fake. We all know he was frozen during the time Star Wars was made.

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

He's presented The Big Breakfast and Radio 2, he's boned Billie Piper, has a beautiful collection of Ferraris and now this!

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Here is a cool documentary about how they were utilized: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw3EvuRkQVw

Had to be one of the top 5 jobs to have ever in the world.

Bob Ross Should always be upvaoted, Specially for SW Posts!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can hear the pneumatic drill sounds in all the Death Star images.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nowadays they use photoshop and greenscreens and it is still hard work. The old fashioned way looks (and is) even harder. Much respect.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Also look, behind the scenes how they actually made it and put in the real footage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw3EvuRkQVw

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wow. Cool video. Thanks for sharing!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Impressive

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

most impressive

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A skill not nearly used enough anymore.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

THEY WERE PAINTED?!!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The star destroyer hangar is a matte painting?!

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

right! I knew about all of them apart from that!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it was a combination of matte and live action shots.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope the new Star Wars isn't full of CGI like the new Hobbit movies. Throw in some old school effects

11 years ago | Likes 121 Dislikes 10

The newest one sucks

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nostalgia glasses blind them.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's pretty obviously what they are shooting for(hah!) based on the teaser trailer.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there wont be matte paintings like this but there will be practical things

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes please.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The trailer is mostly just CGI, as I'm sure a vast majority of the movie will be as well.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Force Awakens may have a shit ton of practical effects, but I'm not certain about the following films

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ryan Johnson will go the same route for sure

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

NEEDS MOAR GREEBLES

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depends on what you need to do.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In J.J. we trust.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're in luck! A TON of effects in the new movie will be practical effects. They built a bunch of full scale models.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm glad these aren't glossy paintings, imagine the reflections with all that industrial light and magic.

11 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 4

Is it just me or do the stormtroopers in the Emperor's hanger not look lined up perfectly? It's really bothering me.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well they can't be perfect... then it would look like a painting.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

seriously, nobody appreciating such a marvellous pun?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I got the joke. I'm not laughin', but I got it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, you are, so I guess we can be cool and awesome together

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait. These were paintings? I don't... what? How? Huh...?

11 years ago | Likes 535 Dislikes 5

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... there was no CGI.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Easy. ILM better known as Industrial Light and MAGIC!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought they were model minatures...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wut the wut.. what sorcery is this?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're essentially painted on glass shower doors b/c correct aspect ratio. The light, transparency, and artistry make them better than CGI

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my thoughts exactly...

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Think about it, guys: up until the 90s (barely), painting and photography was the only way to make images...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why the originals are way better than the new ones. Way better!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here is a cool documentary on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw3EvuRkQVw . The other 3 parts are cool as well. Rotoscoping is intense.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pretty obvious if you watch the pre-special edition versions on a new TV. Doesn't look bad, per se, just clearly a painting.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These still exists today, but most of them digitally. They're called matte paintings, usually for backgrounds.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, wow, I'm surprised not more people are familiar with this grand tradition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matte_painting

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

yeah, it was a HUGE thing before CG; a lot of the exterior shots you recognize were probably mattes

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same way star trek did it. look up the "creator commented" edition from the old star trek with Kirk.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jedi mind tricks.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can someone explain this? EXPLAIN IT!

11 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

without the parentheses - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matte_painting

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Opps ignore that end bracket

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Talent (also this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matte_painting)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That link was a lie. Just like these paintings. Lies.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah sorry, just ignore that end bracket.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To bad there wasn't CG to randomly put shit in the background, luckily, Lucas fixed that later.

11 years ago | Likes 226 Dislikes 7

Did he fix it before he died in that horrible plane crash in 1989?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>=(

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Phew!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technology!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol so bad

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The sarcasm is strong with this one

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How did you stumbled on this thread and post?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The post was linked a few days ago and I comment on someone to see if they still had an active account

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the fuck did I just watch?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have the weirdest account name.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for pointing that out to me.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The prequels used a lot more models and practical effects than people think. The bleachers in the podrace is a model for example.

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I don't really count those as Star Wars anyway...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Whilst they weren't great they definitely felt more like the Star Wars we know and love , compared to Ep7 and 8 especially.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was referencing the "special edition" ones where he's make a window in a scene and put random unneeded shit happening on the other side.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mostly just Episode I. II and III were almost all green screen and CGI.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

The Mustafar scene from Ep3 was done with some model work. A good portion of the backdrop is also images from Mt. Etna in Italy.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not true. Try to actually watch the special features before you stick your foot in your mouth

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Yeah, in the Episode 3 special features, you can see SOME props in front of the blue screen...which are painted blue...everything's blue...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

There's a lot of set, Utapau was a model, ect. People have this unfounded hatred of effects they don't understand.
