A poor family unable to afford a dentist show for a curious photographer how they remove a broken tooth at home using just a pair of plyers in a small town in the Midwest, US, in 1921.

Palestinian fighter Leila Khaled poses with her weapon and grandfather in 1969. Later that year, she would be credited as the first women to hijack a plan when she and another soldier hijacked TWA Flight 840. After a few months all passengers and crew were released with no injuries, and she and her accomplice would be arrested. Eventually she was released in a prisoner exchange. Since her release, she has put down her weapon and instead become a vocal fighter, often speaking in Europe against the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

A teenager poses for her boss as she works her first job as a secretary somewhere in the US in 1968. TV shows, movies, and magazines portrayed secretaries as needing to look professionally sexy and cater to every one of the bosses needs at the time, regardless of the boss or situation, as though being flirty and cute in such a job was necessary. The job itself could be extremely beneficial with excellent pay and perks, but this culture also allowed a ridiculous amount of sexual harassment that often went completely unpunished for decades.

A huge crown of Japanese men gather in Toyko, Japan in 1954. They are not there to protest or vote or anything like that, but instead are watching an American wrestling match on a large TV. It was the first time such an event was available to them, and the turnout was larger than expected. Witnesses said the crowd cheered and booed as if they were right there in the stadium.

A soldier beats protesters during the Gwangju Uprising in Gwangju, South Korea in 1980. The uprising was started when students protesting the government of Chun Doo-hwan were attacked, as shown, then escalated to where the students started being firing upon, killing anywhere from 20-50 (no exact count is known). In response, many people stormed police stations and armed themselves, and for 9 days clashed with government troops before being put down. Anywhere from 200-600 people were killed, with up to 2000 total casualties.

A 14 year old Ethiopian and his unit take target practice somewhere in Northern Africa in 1942. The young man is already a veteran fighter, as he is wearing an enemies cap. He apparently sniped an Italian Officer and claimed the hat as a prize.

Children line up to be given work assignments after having their heads shaved at Jasenovac concentration camp, in occupied Croatia, in 1944. Most of the children in this picture sadly would eventually be killed.

Models pose pretending to box for a magazine in the US in 1933.

A man carries 2 twins in his bags in NYC, US in 1935. The 2 twins are not children, but at the time are 36 year old circus performers. They have a rare genetic disorder preventing them from aging properly.

Miss Iraq Wijdan Suleyman eating snacks prior to the swimsuit competition as part of the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico in 1972.

A wounded Cambodian fighter is carried to an improvised operating room in a mangrove swamp in an area controlled by the Viet Cong on the Ca Mau Peninsula in 1970. The Viet Cong used their surroundings in whatever way they could, either with tunnels deep underground, hiding in swamps, or have entire command bases inside mountains, all to confuse and hide from the enemy, which was extremely useful in avoiding US air and artillery superiority.

Union Army doctors amputate a leg in a makeshift hospital tent at an unknown battle site in 1863. The patient is fully awake with no anesthesia, and needs 2 men to hold his upper body down, another man to hold his legs, and the 2 surgeons to saw off the leg. This was done to prevent gangrene as proper surgical procedures were not readily available for all the wounded and this was the only way to ensure soldiers survived wounds from infection. However, soldiers still had problems with sickness afterwards as the tools were never properly sanitized either after each operation.

A relatively flamboyant man dances during a cabaret show in Berlin, Germany in 1927. In around 7 years, the Nazi's would have total control of the country and would eventually remove such a mans rights to a point where it was very likely that had this man stayed in Germany, he did not survive the holocaust.

Popular nude dancer Micheline Bernardini models the first official bikini designed by Louis Reard, as she is a contestant in a beauty contest at Molitor pool in Paris, France in 1946. The design took off immediately, and despite the original being 71 years old, its basic design still exists today. Interesting note, its named bikini after the atomic bomb testing that happened a week prior to the swimwear's launch in the Bikini Atoll on the Marshall Islands.

A man beats the body of a student hanged during the Thammasat University massacre in Thailand in 1976. Students had held a mock play in protest against the return of military dictator Thanom Kittikachorn. When the military cracked down, the surrendering students were beaten and hanged by angry soldiers and mobs. Even after they were killed, their corpses were beaten over and over for days. American photographer Neal Ulevich was surprising left alone to photograph the events as they unfolded, or this story may not have left Thailand.

A mother and her 2 children sit in their car somewhere in California, US in 1932. This was during the Great Depression, and their car is also in fact their home. Up to 25% of the US was jobless during this time, and it would take the rise in factory production in preparation for WWII before it ended. A quick synopsis, the stock market crash of 1929 did not directly cause the Great Depression, rather, the publics reaction to it did. They all stormed the banks asking for their money. Well, the banks don't keep all the funds deposited, they lend it out. So a lot of banks went under, and many people lost everything they had in those banks. Companies who relied on investing from people who now had no money went bankrupt, causing mass unemployment, and the domino effect hit the entire world. This was huge especially in Germany who depended on the US economy, as it gave rise to the Nazi's and WWII itself. Other factors played a part of course, but most only added to it or pushed the country deeper into the depression.

2 Stunt women show off their skills during a show in Lexington, Kentucky in 1953.

A Japanese Samurai wearing his armor for a photographer in 1882. His wife is kneeling, and she also helped put all the armor on as was the tradition.

Protesters take to the streets of Washington DC to urge president Ronald Reagan to act more strongly on the Aids Epidemic striking fear in the US in 1987. This was part of the Act Up movement that lasted into the 1990s.

Starving children gather in preparation to receive humanitarian support at the tail end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970. Most of these children have lost their parents, either separated or casualties, and were starving and on their own. Up to 3 million refugees were the result of this war, with many starving to death. Despite their appearances, these children are in fact the lucky ones, as most in this picture would survive.

Jasenovac was a concentration camp for Serbs, run by Croatian nazis.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

true dat

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The 2 twins.... Isn't a little redundant? Also I'm probably not the only one that thinks your explanation of the Great Depression is lacking

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Agreed; Germany's continuing war debt was as big a factor as their relying on US economy.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 wait that isn't what they do in America now? I mean i have seen people stitch up their own wounds and pull their own teeth due to money.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#1 who didnt have a tooth or two pulled with pliers as a kid?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I pulled one by myself using bare hands and medical cotton. But it was primary tooth and it was basically hanging on its root, so no biggie.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Growing up poor in Turkey . I had an old neighbor pull my teeth . I still hate her lol

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I cracked a tooth once. No money and no dental coverage, I pried it out with a screwdriver. Wasn't fun.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did not.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nor I! Thankfully

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hate it when my plans get hijacked

"Witnesses said the crowd cheered and booed as if they were right there in the stadium" - Incredibly unlikely for japanese people to do..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

..since even today it is seen as rude to talk on the phone on the train for example. In japan you dont make noise. Except in bars.

The mother and children image from the Great Depression was shot by Dorothea Lange. She chronicled migrant farm workers in this era.

8 years ago | Likes 120 Dislikes 0

Took me a second to realize you meant 'with a camera'

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All I can think of when I look at that picture is The Grapes of Wrath and the Joads

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Good call. Many editions of the book used a Dorothea Lange photo on the cover

It is said that at that time in America, the actions of the American leadership, hunger was killed by about 9 million villagers.

sometimes the world was awesome, sometimes the world was f****d up

8 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 1

Is. Most definitely is. For example, a woman working as a receptionist in London was fired for not wearing high heels last year.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The elephant hanging was bs. People a dumb today but they were dumb fucks a hundred years ago.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you can say fucked up, we are all adults here on the internet.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That those models posing for boxing are now considered plus size is...messed up.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

Who said thst they were plus sized?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think the flamboyant man deserves more credit for his holocaust survivability.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

He probably didn't survive, unfortunately.

#1 what I think of when Trump says "we're gonna have great healthcare."

against the peace process? clarify if possible.

She's a member of PLO/PFLP, so obviously not a fan of israel. Has trouble getting around even today, since shes a member of a terrorist org.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I wouldn't want a known plane hijacker riding in the same plane myself, no matter how much she claimed to have "reformed".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Good job @OP

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I need a p.a, that #3 will do nicely

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

She is probably your grandmas bridge partner by now...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I still need a p.a

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Couldn't keep reading after a terrorist that hijacked a plane was called a "Palestinian fighter" with "another soldier". This is wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 7

We have another word for armed people who hold planes hostage.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The sole reason I did that is despite taking people hostage, this woman didn't hurt anyone, laid down her gun, and speaks about the problems

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

To the world. It's as though her views haven't changed but her methods have drastically changed. Imo she's fighting, not causing terror.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

She knows what she did was wrong and yet she is still relevant today. Just my thought. Do you disagree?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Your Israeli bias is showing.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Israeli bias is calling a person a terrorist if she's taking a plane with innocent people hostage? Check yourself.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your Israeli bias is right there in your comment history. Check mate.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

#2 since when did terrorists become "freedom fighters"?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

Nelson Mandela was labeled a terrorist. Im guessing you have a bias.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

It doesn't say freedom fighters.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Americans are terrorists to alot of people. Its all about perspective.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The line between those two things is often quite slim.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

It's not.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

Perspective.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Let's face it, LK is NOT a freedom fighter, she just is a solemn POS, a murderer and a criminal, now spreading her venom around the world.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

And you're a jew. With all the bias that makes your opinion completely irrelevant.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

Says UlrikeMeinhof whose pseudo speaks for itself :D

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My username does not make your point relevant.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

No, it just makes your comment useless :)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The human piñata one is fucked up.

8 years ago | Likes 502 Dislikes 7

Maybe they told everyone he was secretly a Nazi

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

you should(n't) see what happened in the Bolshevik Revolution too...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I honestly didn't want to see that. I feel like it's a little out of place here, it nearly belongs on a gore website.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are some motherfucking humans - more so in a mob

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That one in particular from this set gives me chills. It did so when I found it, it still does when I see it now.
