This is in reference to my post: http://imgur.com/gallery/BemQEd7

(UPDATE: Sarah has responded here: https://community.imgur.com/t/imgur-should-disclose-commercial-relationships-with-users/13654/157 )

WALL OF TEXT COMING:

This is in reference to: http://imgur.com/gallery/BemQEd7
I felt like my edits wasn’t conveying the developing story appropriately. Opinions change rather rapidly. But let me clarify some things:

When I first made the post this morning, it was directed towards Imgur using Ruffcats as the prime example. It may have come off as being directed at Ruffcats. Let me make this clear: I didn’t intend it 100% to be that way, but maybe a little (honest is the best policy right? This is what I want to convey). Here’s what originally was grinding my gears:

Ruffcats has made a ton of posts to Imgur, particularly the Stay Classy Imgur posts. While I don’t enjoy them as much, I will admit that they are good posts. They have an entertainment value, they can be produced endlessly, and they involve community interaction. BUT, at the same time, they were also breaking a few rules (I’ll get to why they weren’t breaking them in the end in a minute). In every post, Ruffcats includes links to his Twitter and other social media, as well as to his Teespring campaign (where Stay Classy Imgur shirts are being sold). Again, I’m all for people making good posts, and if he can make a bit of cash in the end, good for him! Well, at least kinda.

In Imgur’s own rules, it says (paraphrasing here) to not advertise¹ . Advertising is bad, right guys? We all hate link-dropping. Imgur really hates it because really, advertising is good! It’s what allows services such as Imgur to exist (as a business), and creates the platform for us to enjoy as a community (which developed over time; Imgur didn’t start as a community but it grew into one). Imgur wants to make a profit! So they say “Hey, don’t advertise yourself! Instead, pay us and we’ll do it for you!”, which is even better. It’s done properly, and everyone makes money. Great!

But then it came down to the promoted post fiasco. Imgur wanted to have native and subtle advertising², which completely backfired (looking at you Warner Bros), at least at first. Then they took a hint and started marking posts as Promoted, to show that money is being passed around in exchange for Imgur intervening directly and pushing the content to the top, allowing them to get some interest in their brand. They basically let eBay and Old Spice “get away with breaking the rules” (or rather, the rules don’t apply to them anymore since they are no longer a normal post). They can link whatever they want!

But not the rest of us. If I post links, people can report me and it will get taken down. Some people do make it to the front page without issue (for instance, those that make video games on their own time and want to share it). And you know what? Good for them! If Ruffcats was doing it legitly, good for him! If someone wanted to make something and share about it and post a link to sell it, go for it! But because some of us are getting these posts reported and taken down, some of us can’t get the same results. So why us and why not them? Why is it okay for some or others?

Well part of it is the will of the people. The mob-mentality that says “You know what? This is alright!”. This is what lets those indie developers get their stuff to the front page. And Imgur allows it because they want the community! And I’m all for it! BUT simply because something didn’t hit front page right away, it’s bad and has to be taken down, even though the popular posts were also reported. Which brings us back to Ruffcats.

Ruffcats found a way around this. Step 1: be popular. Step 2: Get a contract with Imgur³. Step 3:??? Step 4: Profit! Yes, Ruffcats got a contract with Imgur to produce the shirts. But he wasn’t the only one! Kantackistan, the creator of those awesome talking vegetable comics is also in a contract with Imgur to be able to sell his shirts on the front page! But how did they manage? Well, 50% profits to Imgur is how! And this is great all around! Imgur gets money to keep running and feed their employees (Sarah gets grumpy if she didn’t have her daily banana), and the people making the shirts get to legally do it, and make some cash!

But here’s the catch: we didn’t know that this is why his stuff was getting through until now. His stuff isn’t marked as promoted like the other advertisements were. His preferential treatment wasn’t explained until now. You know that whole thing about transparency we’re always crying about? As Sarah said, “It's better to be straightforward IMO.”⁴

And you know what else? They weren’t bring straightforward this time. Both Sarah and Ruffcats were completely contradicting each other in the comments. It could be inferred (incorrectly apparently) that Ruffcats was running the shirt sales, when indeed it was Imgur (inferred from Sarah talking about it, and the verbiage on the Teespring page). On top of that, Ruffcats went on about how he didn’t plan on opening the Teespring campaign a second time around but according to Twitter, Imgur started selling them again.

How does it affect me? Well, it doesn’t really. A normal human being wouldn’t care. BUT this is Imgur right? We like to grab our pitchforks about random things. We also like to make posts, laugh, cry because of onions, and complain. But most importantly we like to be a community, as much as we don’t admit it. What would Imgur be if we didn’t crave this interaction? A site with no traffic except for people sharing to Reddit and submitting to the gallery for no reason! WE MADE IMGUR WHAT IT IS TODAY! WE MADE IMGUR PROFITABLE!

There’s probably a ton of other thoughts but I can’t put them all together and for those who have stuck through this, I thank you. But unfortunately I don’t have a prize for you for reading this far, not even a t-shirt. But I do know of one you could buy, and a portion of the profits are going to the SPCA: The Stay Classy Imgur shirt that Ruffcats and Imgur partnered (in a contract, without disclaiming this, and not getting their story straight about).

Ruffcats has been in contact with Sarah

Ruffcats sharing our conversation with Social Savanna

I thought he wasn't supposed to say anything and wanted me to take my screenshots down? (he also posted a screenshot to Twitter, and referenced me in his Snapchat).

Sarah indicating that this was self-promotion and not advertising

The referenced advertising links in Ruffcats's posts

Sarah admitting to a partnership

(read bottom to top) Ruffcats indicating that he put the Teespring campaign up (false!)

Additionally, I have used Teespring myself. There is an option to make it automatically open the campaign again.

I've never had an issue with someone on Imgur because they're popular but I hate constant posts about famous imgurians.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

It's turning into an Internet war. So yes.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Famous imgurians is fine. Giving exemption to rules is not fine. The rule(s) should apply to everyone or the rule(s) shouldn't exist.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 4

I agree with you about the rules, but I still think having "famous imgurians" can only hurt our culture.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imgur has always had famous users. But only because they're first to pun or post lots of entertaining things. You can't avoid it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're right, you can't avoid it, but you don't also have to encourage it by inviting the famous ones to a camp. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not defending the famous users at all. And I agree, it shouldn't become an even circlier circlejerk. I'm saying you'll always have em.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Same. I use this app when pinching a loaf or riding the train for work. Not shirt worthy

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I bought one a year or so ago. I don't wear it out anywhere but it sure is the most damn comfortable shirt I've slept in.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The last thing I would ever buy is a penis-biting piranha. The second to last thing is a penis-biting lion. But sure, Imgur tee shirts.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

i would love an imgur shirt. in fact, sod it! I'm off to buy one!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Idk...I love this website and love the stay clay posts. I bought 2 SCI shirts and am proud of it. *shrugs* to each their own.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. You support the site we all use..

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Yep me too. I'm also glad that after this shitstorm, we probably won't see anymore fake bullshit "confessions" on the front page.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

I always wonder if those are real.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

95% of them aren't or are heavily edited. There was a similar confession post where the author was editing stories to make them "funnier".

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just want to see images that make me laugh. Thats all I want. Not a community, not celebrities, just things to laugh at on the toilet.

10 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 0

A community of celebrities all on the same toilet! That would be golden!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And it's called "I'd give it 5 minutes". Gold!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Simplicity: That's the ticket!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I bought the first one but never wore it because I realized someone might see me and take my pic and put it on Imgur. Gave it to Goodwill.

10 years ago | Likes 313 Dislikes 3

the type of apparel you only wear if bought from a goodwill. just like my fuchsia swishy pants.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Now the real question is why hasn't anyone tracked down said shirt and posted a picture of it?

10 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

Sorry, but that is hilarious. Why not keep it as a lounge around the house shirt?

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

I was doing a purging of clothes, I thought about offering it on Imgur but that sounded like too much work.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What I got from this post is I was right about imgur going to the dogs, sad but true, & the way ruffcat responded, makes him seem more shady

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 11

*going to the cats ;)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I love Ruffcats, but I agree that at this point he should become a promoted account like @eBay or @WarnerBros.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TLDR; Ruffcats (Stay Classy Imgur) and 'Sarah' (Imgur) are selling T-Shirts for profit without labeling promoted.

10 years ago | Likes 890 Dislikes 17

But are the quotes sourced from actual people, THAT is what i want to know!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I only read the first pic, and got that much info...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thats it? Really? God dammit who cares if they are.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 11

Good ol' Imgur melodrama!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean... I'm really good at designing shirts. Imgur can have all the profit.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You forget: and everyone's crying because their facade community that they bought into has been shattered.

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 7

Wait, when did we start buying into it? What? When? I'm confused now..

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

OOOOOOOOOOOH SUCH A SIN I MUST RAGE AND RANT MATICUOUSLY UNTIL IMGUR STOPS TRYING TO FUND THEIR OWN SITE SO I CAN RANT AND RAGE MATICULOUSLY

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

And yet again, we have a demonstration of How Not To Do Things. No one really minds an unobtrusive ad or two. What we mind is the secrecy.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

why does anyone care??!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 9

We upvoted the post though... It's not like the post was forced upon us on the front page.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The middle schoolers that use this website are evidently very upset about it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I thought promoted posts were promoted in the sense they were put to the front page? Ruffcats posts go through the same as everyone else's.

[deleted]

10 years ago (deleted Apr 4, 2023 12:03 AM) | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

True, but you can't promote your tee-shirts because it's against the rules your post would be taken down. His doesn't because imgur gets $.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

The problem is not just that,it is also about them having a contract together without labeling itas promoted. And having sale links in posts

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 8

But it's not promoted. Having a contract doesn't mean it's a promoted post; just that they are legally bound by contract to prevent issues.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

There is blatant advertising, which is not allowed by community rules, and other that don't have contracts have their posts removed.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I thought Sarah explained that the blatant advertising rule was about people spamming ads? However, no one accepts that explanation -_-

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

true promoted isn't exactly the issue. but that's a matter of terminology not substance. think promoted says what he wants the best

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But he's advertising the sale of products in an imgur post, which is not allowed.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Half the profit is going to Imgur. Why would they remove that? Others don't have that opportunity but last time I checked, life aint fair

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I understand why they allow it. The point OP is making is that they're stupid. Life ain't fair but we're still allowed to bitch about it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly fucking thank you!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

My question is how it worked out using imgurs logo. Does ruffcats have a special deal? Can anyone make the same deal he did to sell tshirts?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Well it's safe to say that he does have a special deal. That doesn't mean everyone is entitled to it. Such drama over absolutely nothing.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

native marketing is a sign of the apocalypse. hardly nothing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

To be fair, I think most of the drama is over the lack of transparency rather than the advertising...

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ruffcats wasn't allowed to disclose he had a deal with Imgur? Now THAT sounds shady.

10 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 7

Sad that our government produces that kind of fear. The corruption has gone too far.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

i don't disagree, but i don't think human nature allows for an organization that size to exist without all the corruption

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It would be difficult, but I believe it's possible to refine rules enough to reduce the corruption by shedding light on more gov operations

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously it isn't that simple but this is imgur, not a serious debate website. You get the gist I hope

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Additionally, every member of the government with decision making powers should have tabs kept on them and watched closely for corruption

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

nonono! you said you like him, why would you wish him to "disappear"?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is exactly why we need people like him to expose this government. If investigating a government implies certain death, It's fucked up.

10 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 8

ANY corruption matters. It normalizes the practice and make people more accepting of it.

The Imgur "community" is really just a few dozen users jerking each other off and a couple thousand people desperately trying to fit in.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

An imgur subreddit is looking better and better every day... Just saying guys

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

/r/ignorantimgur looks great every day

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean one imgur users would actually post on ourselves, but yeah I do enjoy that sub

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not yet, obviously we need more ads integrated into it first

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And cats, more cats!!!

10 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 6

Oh my god I was going to say that!! I've been here for more than 4 years, member for almost 3 and I came here for the CATS!!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Lets hope they are a little less ruff.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I want more crack cocaine fam.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone needs to make an Imgur civil war picture. That's what it is starting to feel like.

BUSTED: He mysteriously deleted both accounts after that...

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 4

I'm waiting to see a thurd account pop up and PM you about the screenshot xD

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

*third.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Turd would also be acceptable for describing mister "2 accounts guy."

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

sockpuppeting on imgur. What is the point in that? Ok, maybe it is time for this "community" to go away..

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

not relevant, but wtf is with your up/downvotes?

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It suddenly started doing that last year and never stopped. I always figured it was Ebola.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

lmao

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its all xoxoxoxo, you are giving hugs and kisses, apparently.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

As a community, we like Ruffcats and Stay Classy. If we didn't, they wouldn't consistently make front page.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 65

I'm guessing his posts automatically get to the front page.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's this "we" shit.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 9

The 'community' is the whole problem. Bandwagon upvoting and downvoting. This used to be a site for funny pics, that's it. No more no less.

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 17

Sites grow?

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

Sadly true. That doesn't mean it has to become the one thing that made it different from other image sharing sites though.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

lool I wonder if other community based image sharing sites started out the same.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

The circlejerkers that call themselves a community, like that shit. Justin Bieber is popular, that doesn't mean she should be.

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 15

It'll only happen if we destroy the terrible "community" entirely. Imgur should go back to being The Simple Image Sharer. Nothing more.

They'd lose a s**t load of traffic doing that. I've also a sneaking suspicion reposts would be ever the more popular...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

But we feel the need to express out opinions, make references to feel relatable and make awful food puns!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

This is easily the most convenient site to host images on and I'd keep coming here for that no matter what community is or isn't here.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Puush beats it out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should see this: http://xomf.com/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They've changed the subtitle on Google. It's not Imgur:The Simple Image Sharer anymore, but Imgur:The Most Awesome Place On The Internet1/2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The images aren't even that awesome. It's cookie cutter garbage with the occasional decent OC, but nothing i'd call "awesome"

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

2/2 *Images, not place, sorry. It's not that important, but it shows how much more promotion oriented they have become than content oriented

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ruffcats rage quitted Social Savanna after "endorsing" the website http://imgur.com/YJrUu3X

10 years ago | Likes 143 Dislikes 12

Ha, I also have the NSF per diem page bookmarked. Are you a graduate student or in academia?

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

No, I work in compliance and auditing, I review invoices and have to make sure people arent going crazy spending dolla bills

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a douchewaffle

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 14

Just to be clear, he chose to post a link and after he did it a few times I gave him a free sub just like anyone else who has 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

But I never actively sought out for him to advertise the site or paid him with money to do so! it was up to him. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Yup. A douchewaffle. I really think people would like to hear in light of all todays events whether he's trustworthy, you could make a post?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This isn't really about RuffCats, it's about imgur's lack of transparency and sometimes questionable business practices.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Yeah I wasn't talking about that topic though. I was talking about whether sites and people can trust him as a partner.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He endorsed it, then decided it was shit, then stopped endorsing it. So what?

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

I assume the point is that in the messages above he plays the victim card for being personally called out by OP and acts like decorum 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yeah sure, but this initial comment has nothing to do with stuff going on now and is really nothing to be 'called out' on

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I honestly don't know. I think it's a reveal of character more than this promoted post debate. Which technically doesn't have anything to1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

do with it, except add to the feeling that he's shady and does what's convenient for him when it suits him to say it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

calls for a private message, but in a general socialsavanah chat made this comment which seems hypocritical. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I agree with you OP and I think you caused a before and after in this site. These "imgur celebrities" think they're actually famous

10 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 22

Let's not dismiss the fact that most of it's attributed to people on this site keeping the running gags going. I know. I'm a bandwagon bitch

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Even if they didn't think their famous, a lot of the "community" does, for whatever reason

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There is only one imgur celebrity, and his name is MisterSavage

10 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 3

and he's a tool

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

That we know of... hell dude, Obama could actually be Razor.

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

That would actually be amazing

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

He's a real celebrity, who used imgur for marketing

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Actually yeah, he runs a YouTube channel called tested and they make decent cash.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What about Mac?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Oh yeah! Has he posted again since that first time?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Idk but I like your username

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you :) I love Twentyone Pilots

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How are people surpised? Imgur is a for-profit company. Their goal is to make money. Sarah is a PR manager. Her job is to make Imgur (1/2).

10 years ago | Likes 135 Dislikes 11

The issue is that they are trying to make money via regular users - when Imgur is trying to make money, it needs to be disclosed

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Out of curiosity, why? As long as they don't take money from me without me knowing it and there are still funny posts I dont really care

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Look good. Imgur's no different then any other company and this happens all the time. Sarah just does a great job of making imgur look (2/3)

10 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 11

Less monolithic. That's how other companies do it. No one wants to buy anything from big brother. Great job OP on the research. +1

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 7

That was the goal and you're right OP did a good job. Imgur failed in essentially what was destined to fail 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As you said the objective was to keep Ruffcats as a inside community member and support him by supporting yourself, but that works 2/?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

when your representative appears to be just a community member because otherwise people lose that connection. Not to say ppl dont love imgur

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The issue is that if I went and gave a link to my tshirt site, it would get taken down. But since Ruff is in an undeclared partnership 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

2/2 with imgur, he can link to whatever he wants just like promoted posts, except he's not marked as promoted.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Of course they would. They make money when ruffcats sells a shirt. Why would they want him to have any competition? (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

for some reason i feel kinda offended by that. we really are just dollar signs, arent we?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

You seem like a gent. Nice job. :)

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I would just like to say you provided way more clarity in a much more friendly manner than ruff, thank you

10 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 5

100% agreed, handled very professionally.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hey no problem. I've got nothing to hide, and I doubt Imgur does either. Sure, they're a business, but they really do care about the users.

10 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 4

I'd react like ruffcats too if my name was on FP:

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 4

@OP says "9 years (public cable) TV production experience". It's a headline, it gets attention. Nobody would look at "I like transparency".

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

I'll be honest, my heart skipped a beat when I read my name in the above post. My first reaction was "WHAT DID I DO THIS TIME?!"

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree that his reaction wasn't unexpected, but if @ruffcats cared about "image" he'd suck up and act professional about it!

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

agreed. Imagine how hurt he must be, it came out of nowhere. I agree with OP but I also feel bad for Ruffcats.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 7

Have announcements of your shirts been 'promoted' posts? I feel like I've run into them before. Not in some time. I forget.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, Imgur created promoted posts for our first two Shirt campaigns. These posts were made with Imgur's account, so I didn't get upvotes.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

right, thats what I remembered. Thanks! :D

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No worries! It's possible that post got removed, I can't seem to find it anywhere. It used to be in my favorites.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can't seem to find the ol Promoted Post, but here's the blog post: http://imgur.com/blog/2014/03/24/saucy-daikon-huggable-eggplant-shirts/

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I took a two week break from imgur... And come back thinking of leaving again.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been a member for 4 years, i understand what you mean @DefinitelyNotAPrincess !

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel as though Imgur Team is willing to be transparent on all this, it's just nobody's asked until now. From where I sit, anyway.

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 12

transparency doesn't mean waiting for people to ask, it means providing information openly

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I feel as you missed this point completely, this is why we have trust issues

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Haha I probably did miss the point! It's hard to make complex points in tiny comments. But a lot of this seems like misunderstandings to me.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I don't think we has people can look at such a large issue has a "misunderstanding" but this isn't on you, mainly the problems imgur

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Here's the thing about transparency... you shouldn't have to ask for it. It should be given from the start.

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 4

Not if you don't know it's not already transparent

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 13

So as long as you don't get caught?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's circular logic to a T.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I probably could have phrased my comment better. (140 chars :/ ) I meant to say Imgur Team would probably happily explain, but wasn't asked.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

the post was a way of asking, it's saying "Hey what's happening here? There appears to be a discrepancy in application of rules"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even though, we shouldn't have to ask at all, that's what makes it transparency.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I know this kind of contradicts the point of this post, but uh... we need more shirts.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Haha well, we are currently in the middle of reprinting the Craig the Happy Celery shirts if you need that one.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I absolutely have a need for a second one.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

or just an entire week's worth.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha I know that feeling. They are available for about one more day at http://teespring.com/limited-edition-imgur-shirts

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This one doesn't say "Imgur" on the back!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(Plus they have a new improved design! Craig now looks like modern Craig, if that means anything to you.)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It means everything to me.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey, thank you for taking the time to comment! I'll be sure to ask if I have any. I would appreciate any thoughts you have on the matter.

10 years ago | Likes 336 Dislikes 17

(Lots of 100%'s today. I feel like a stereotype about Asian parents.)

10 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 3

No problem! I can't speak for Ruffy, but I can say the Celery T-Shirts were 100% Imgur's Team's idea, and they were 100% great to work with.

10 years ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 4

This sounds scripted.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Lol I spend a good amount of my life phrasing tiny speech bubbles, trying to make them read professionally. Sounding scripted is my job!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"good amount of my life" - I thought you were like.. in high school or something. Did I just imagine that??

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm glad to hear the process was clean! I'm not against it at all by the way, I hope I've been clear. Just the lack of transparency by Imgur

10 years ago | Likes 207 Dislikes 9

I understand. Also, to be fair, the shirts began to resell recently because of the Teespring company - not because of Ruff or Imgur. (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 3

I've used Teespring in the past. In creation, I believe there's an option to automatically re-open the campaign.

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 7

Teespring's like Kickstarter for shirts. Last week they changed the minimum number of votes needed to reprint, so they all restarted. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

His shirts were always Imgur's. That was pretty clear, ruffcats not so much

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I can't speak for ruff; you'll have to ask him questions directly. This all is assuming his team up with Imgur was identical to mine.

10 years ago (deleted Oct 21, 2024 11:44 PM) | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

2/2 Imgur would have deleted posts that advertised your shirts for violation of their rules. So their cut was for letting you violate rules.

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

1/2 I just want to make sure this is clear to me: Imgur took 50% for giving you permission to advertise. If you had wanted 100% of profits

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

Here's an unpopular opinion - Imgur is a privately held company. Why should there be any transparency?

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 13

Because they have promised transparency to us, the users. Why should we support a company that lies to its customers?

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

So, it's possible I'm missing something, but are Ruffcats's "self promotional" t-shirt posts being automatically pushed to the front page?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Nope! But the advertising isn't being removed either, even though I know people are reporting it.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 6

Waaaaay back when they were first announced (2014? 2013?) there was probably a promoted post. But Imgur made that post, not Ruff.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

She is sister to the creator of imgur.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Or, OR, and this is crazy, maybe she's both doing her job and a good person? Like most people?

Pretty much. Oh, can I get a job manipulating people? Totally, I'm a great person.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

What's your evidence for her being this evil and conniving corporate entity? She took a job in PR perhaps because she likes people?

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 12

Nobody likes people. People are scum. I'm not saying anything one way or the other about her, but the broad view of people is always bad.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

Maybe you are just an ass

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

To be fair, that's not her fault though. She can't help it that people are this gullible towards her job. She's good at what she does.

10 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 10

I agree, but she knows her market. Most people on here seek friends in a world they don't usually have many. Easy to win trust.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I was actually always kind of disenchanted by her using her femaleness to win over imgurians.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Haha well yeah but again: she's doing what she got hired to do and is very good at it. I don't blame her for being good at her job.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

I do. I also blame telemarketers for calling during my dinner. Frankly, she chose the job, and deserves the distrust.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Same here. I feel bad for her, as a fellow human, that her job might be in danger now. I bet she really liked that job.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Woah I don't think her job's in danger man. They know what they're doing. I think there might be a new image site popping up soon though.

10 years ago | Likes 155 Dislikes 7

It's not that they don't understand, it's that they don't want to understand. "Oh look a girl on the internet paid attention to ME

OH MY GOD SARAH YAY!!!!!" That is the extent of their caring.

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

MRW if I would've been invited to Camp Imgur

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 2

I wouldn't exactly call it 'begging' - but I admitted from Day 1 they offered me admission. I paid my airplane tickets, of course.

10 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 6

I appreciate your willingness to comment about all of this. Your transparency shows real character. You seem like an alright dude.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Thanks! I do my best

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hey, I hope your name isn't being dragged through the mud. I like you and your posts. Don't let me down buddy

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

Hey, no worries! So far, no mud here. Just figure I can clear up some potential controversies. (Always good to see new posts from you too!)

10 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 3

Get @ruffcats in here, this is how you handle potential controversy. Address it rather than being petty and childish.

Who. Gives. A. Fuck. Look at the pictures, laugh and finish the rest of your day. This is fucking ridiculous

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 54

ShamrockFury made me laugh more than any of these stupid fucking pictures, so I give a fuck

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

Boo fucking hoo, wash your hands when you're done jerking him of. Jesus Christ that's pathetic.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 42

You need a stress ball and a thesaurus buddy

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Jesus, that's creepy af. Run Shamrock, run far away

10 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 1

That is creepy as fucking hell.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That sounds like him alright.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeesh.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Well that's not right.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Yes, sorry for not giving you credit for being the one to first bring it up.

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

No need to apologize. People were questioning my motives, and asking for proof. Just didn't want that to start under your comment

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Oh man, I miss him so much

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

What did he do?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He was one of the funniest people on Imgur, in my opinion. He never lost the old school sarcastic humor that Imgur used to have.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

commenting cause i want to know too

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Dangit GoalKreeper, I thought I got an answer to my question. Got me all excited for nuffin.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I hate this 'famous imgurian' shit, it evolves into some circlejerking.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 4

In the case of Shamrock I rarely ever see anything but quality content from him

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Butthurt he's not a famous imgurian^

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 28

WillJeSuis is moderately famous though, sort of.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Wut

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well you did get a bit of fame a while back when this got posted

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@kylecorn and @chemistrydoc, care to comment? You guys were there. Did they pay for your trip or actively try to get you to attend?

10 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 6

I did read that Imgur paid their way to camp Imgur. Which is okay to me.

10 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 6

You think they show favoritism to their posts? Whenever they post, it's like a free pass to the FP

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

But aren't we the ones upvoting them? Unless you're saying imgur is manipulating points?

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Idk what to believe anymore man, all the dirty laundry is being put out to dry. I wouldn't be shocked if there was point manipulation

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

They did.

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 7

Well then, "hey come join us for fun! Just make sure to pay...unless we like you and want popular users there...unlike you. Pay up fuckers"

10 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

Huh, weird how they didn't invite you. I keep track of the funnies, and you bud, are one of them.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

i assume @cuntsparkle was paid for by imgur also

10 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 4

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

yeah but I let sarah deal with all the shifty stuff, i mean she is pretty good at it.

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I would also like to thank @kylecorn for his messages/questions on the Ruffcats topic.

10 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 7

What did he say?

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

He posed a few questions on the topic. Actually helped me straighten my thoughts out. Everything we talked about has been covered.

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Man, you're in contact with ALL the imgur celebrities. Trying to bring you into the fold maybe?

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Can we "stop promoting" imgur users please? This whole thing is so fucking stupid. This is not why we all started browsing imgur.

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

agreed, it creates less of a community and more of a hierarchy among users. A community isn't divided

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You would think chemistrydoc could pay for his own ticket out of the money he scammed from imgur people.

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 4

Someone should make a post about chemistry docs scam!

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

So pissed he never did that show. What a scam artist dbag.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

You're assuming he has any of that money left.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I'm lost too ... Can someone jog my memory

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He crowd funded an internet science show via imgur but there's been no word on progress for over half a year. People are unhappy.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He promised to start doing youtube videos of science stuff. He set up a gofundme and got 7k in donations and never did anything.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

What?

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

He promised to start doing youtube videos of science stuff. He set up a gofundme and got 7k in donations and never did anything.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I'm not defending him though.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

7k is not really enough to produce any kind of quality content in the style he wanted. I could maybe see 7k for one episode being realistic.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 9

Whether you're being a dick about it or not doesn't change that you're very much correct in calling them out. Ruffcats would be better 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 884 Dislikes 40

than the rest. Green to red. Machine head.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Dont really beat around the bush do ya?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That took me way too long to get.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really wanna upvote you but you're at 666 upvotes... I will upvote a different comment/ post to balance it.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 13

I greatly disagree.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 21

Explain please, I'd like to hear why though

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Well, maybe I'm confused. I don't exactly see who's suffering. What I DO see is a celebrity getting special treatment, which is...common.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Ha. Celebrity.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Within our community? Yes. Shall I get you the dictionary definition of the word?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, yeah, it's not fair, but either somebody's going to get punished for doing something harmless, or everybody else is going to receive

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

the same benefits as him, but I don't really see that many people using it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

off cutting his losses and not trying to defend himself, acknowledging this is only going to make it grow.

10 years ago | Likes 548 Dislikes 19

in the grand scheme of things though, what does it really matter? imgur is a free site.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

just like a politician.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Heh I bet he's getting PR advice from imgur on how to handle this.

10 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 3

no, i have my own PR

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 96

Mob mentality, anonymity of the internet, and the general imgur circlejerk form a really bad combination that nobody wants to deal with.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 12

They're all lightweights! Pfft stupid morons.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Oh shit there he is! GET HIM! AHHGGGHHGHH (dude I would not have come here if I were you. Lol)

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

I feel for both sides. I know this must be hard for you, do not take this personally. Stay strong & honest and everything will be fine.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

People asked me to make shirts, so i did. I feel like anyone would take the opportunity if offered. I didn't force anyone to buy anything

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 42

At the end of the day, it's the Internet. Don't let it get you down. There's a great big world out there. That goes for both sides of this.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This probably wasn't what you were expecting to go through today but are you alright this kind of escalated quickly

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 5

Didn't he have a whole snapchat about how badly he felt he was being treated? Talk about mature.

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 2

He looks like he's 12 though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

since you seem to know what's going on... is all this basically because Ruffcats posts should say "promoted" on them?

10 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 0

it's basically because it's a profit making post- split with imgur, but without it showing that that was the case

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Basically, Imgur publicly decided that self-promos wouldn't be allowed unless marked as paid promo. They haven't equally enforced that bc $$

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In my opinion, they shouldn't. Ruffcats goes through the same as everyone else to get to the front page, he doesn't pay to go there.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yes

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

So basically I would be forced to see it, instead of it being instantly upvoted to the front page where... I would be forced to see it.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

But you would be aware that imgur is directly profitting from the post

Just from one of the best TV-series of all tine, The Wire. Watch it, its great.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Wire. Watch it, it's phenomenal.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think it's ok to promote his shirts. He is providing a service (stay classy posts). I haven't seen any "buy my shit" posts.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 15

This site isn't supposed to be about providing a service!! It's about entertainment. People should post stuff to share for the lolz

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Entertainment and image hosting are literally services. Sorry to burst you bubble.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

this is user submitted content hosted by imgur which makes money from ads. not imgur paying people to submit content. I'm not paying anyone

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Again, promotion is FINE as long as the posts are marked as PROMOTED POSTS, because Imgur is making money off of them. But they're not.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

He's been all about self promotion from the beginning. Through his social medias it's been kind of obvious he's kind of a jerk. Or used to

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

I quickly unfollowed him because he oozed douchery.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Definitely gave the vibe he considered himself better than the rest of us lowly users. I hate that I enjoy SCI, wish he remained anonymous

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Agree 1000%

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Basically exactly how I feel... he is clearly a huge douche, but Stay Classy is interesting still

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I wonder if they'll ban him. Based on how overdramatic Imgur and the internet gets about that stuff, it'd make him a martyr.

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 3

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry, but none of you understand marketing at. all. You're fine with Microsoft harvesting your data but not ok with Imgur executing 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 79

Who said we were okay with Microsoft harvesting our data?

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Literally every post about Window 10 is a bunch people saying how much they don't care.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 12

Most of those posts are just people refuting the over-the-top claims of other frontpage posts that say that Windows 10 is evil in every way.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not what I've seen. Most are very ignorant to how much personal data is worth, and what Microsoft collects. Maybe we're reading diff things.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

a successful marketing plan on you? This isn't your safehouse. YOU are the product. Marketers don't care about you. Sorry. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 60

Isn't that his whole point? That they pretend to care while they don't?

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 38

why the fuck are you getting downvoted? you're essentially just summarizing this post

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

...yes... ok... You seem to be confused and think this post is about something else. He's literally saying what you're saying....

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

Next on the docket should be some transparency from chemistrydoc and his $7K of imgurian money

10 years ago | Likes 269 Dislikes 7

Imgur doesnt seem to care, they even took him to Camp Imgur as far as I know.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

1) It's that time when chemistrydoc planned on doing a youtube chemistry show, but didn't have the money. He asked imgurians for support via
