After many adventures and victories, Goku and his friends must face their greatest challenge yet. Android 16 is back with a renegade gang of villains and androids. It’s every enemy the team has ever faced, and their power level is WAY over 9000. Can the FighterZ band together and defeat their army?

Well, you know how the Saiyan goes- what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. DRAGON BALL FighterZ officially launches on January 26. You can order your copy of DBFZ now for XBOX One, PS4, and PC. Let’s kick things off a little early with a friendly face-off.

Before we get down to energy blasts, let’s talk gameplay. DRAGON BALL FighterZ is a 2D 3v3 tag/support game. By selecting three characters, you form an all-powerful team that can switch between characters depending on whose unreal muscles will make for the most damage.

DBFZ is split into three chapters: the Super Warriors Arc, the Super Villain Arc, and the Android Arc, represented by Goku, Frieza, and Android 18. Brandish your upvote weaponry and decide who would win in a fight between these formidable foes.

First in the ring, first in our hearts. Many of us grew up alongside Goku, willing our fighting skills to be half as good and our hair to be even an eighth as cool. In DBFZ you can play multiple versions of your childhood hero, including Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, and Goku Black.

Sounds awesome, right? That’s not even this game’s final form.

Next up, the descendant of Chilled, the son of King Cold, the entire reason DRAGON BALL exists- Frieza! If ego was a power source, this battle would already be on ice. With blistering moves like Death Saucer, Earth Breaker, and Golden Frieza, the FighterZ are at a risk for serious damage, especially when the Frost Demon activates the ‘vanish’ teleport move. You can battle the elements at 100% Full Power and as the ultimate Golden Frieza.

Last but definitely not least, Android 18’s not here to play. As beautiful as she is ruthless, this competitor can deliver a terrifically cutting combo or a fireball that can literally scorch the earth. Hell hath no fury like a woman who was forcibly turned into a cyborg. With her brother, Android 17, these twins can deliver devastating multi-hit attacks.

Super Saiyan Dog Tax. (Fun fact: Alan’s dog is named Goku!)

And then with a burst of light, or maybe a famous DB cutscene, it’s over. Blonde, gravity-defying hair returns to black. The echoes of those deafening power-screams dissipate. The battle- for now- has finished. Vote in the comments for who you think would win in a fight between Goku, Frieza, and Android 18. Then order now and play out your own ultimate showdown.

So much better than xenoverse. It feels much less broken and a lot more fluid.

Seen a few leaked clips. The amount of snark Cell has is just great. It's almost on DBZ Abridged level.

I get that this game is supposed to be fast paced, but I miss the beam struggles from older games. Not DBZ without them.

That animation is smooth... It's something so small and miniscule, yet, greatly appreciated. Kinda rare in DBZ to have animation like that.

then you never watched closely enough. true not every scene was that fluid but there's usually one or two very well drawn scenes in each ep

Well, my only experiences of original DBZ is the games, Kai, a few episodes when I was younger, and DBZ Abridged.

Listen I want to get this game but are you guys releasing it in the switch?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

They said they might do it if enough people ask... Well-known eSports people and even Chris Sabat (Vegeta's Voice actor) are in on it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly! And after there's been such a huge outpouring for it. Until then it's just like "That's cool and all but Switch when?"

That plot makes no sense, Android 16 was the only truely good & selfless Android, why the fuck would you have him lead the evil guys?

He was still programmed to kill Goku. And the main villain is a new Android likely based on geros wife

Wait what? Android 16 is back with villains? The big love able one that loved life? I think something fishy is going on here

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I think there was a typo, because last I saw the main villain was "Android 21".

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its both. Android 21 is supposed to be as intelligent as Dr. Gero, so its possible she recreated him for her own devices.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ahhhh, okay. That makes more sense. The post makes it sound like 16 is leading the baddies.

Please please please be as fast and awesome as budokai 3. I'll buy 2 if you are. 3D is cool but can never be as fast as 2D.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I played both beta they had out and I can say it's pretty fast paced. I would compare it to a MvC game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what. you understand what you're saying right? you know budokai 3 was 3d. same as this. I don't know where you get the idea speed = not 3d

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think he means full 3d arenas. Even though you could sidestep in budokai 3 it just shifted the 2d plane on which you fought.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That still doesn't affect speed. if anything this is the fastest dbz game to date. but whatever.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the fastest one. Tenkaichi took the urgency out. Budokai had those sweet instadodges. Looks like it comes back here.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im curious how can they do that for a fighting game...Not that much except story and online matches.

They did it with street fighter V. (they made the second half free once they finally finished it though)

That's one thing I don't understand. Why are they called Androids if they are Cyborgs? Shouldn't it have been Cyborg 18? Cyborg 21?

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Shes majin

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some are Cyborgs (17, 18, 20, 21), others are full androids (16, 19). They just kept the same name conventions for simplicity's sake.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Probably because eof the Anime Cyborg 009 or something like that. Didn't want to confuse the audience.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jinzoningen could be translated to cyborg or android, so they guessed, and they guessed wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

See, this is something I can understand, thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Translation error

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yup, someone pointed that out and I agree that it makes much more sense. Unrelated question: what did 18 see in Krillin?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Android" is the best approximate adaptation of the original Japanese term "jinzoningen," which translates literally as "artificial humans."

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It doesn't fit all of them exactly since there's different types (cyborgs, fully-mechanicals, etc), but it's close enough.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Artificial Human 18... yeah that is a mouth full.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Abbreviate it to A Human 18.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Technically speaking, I think the only cyborgs that Gero created were 17 and 18. 16, 19, and 20 were purely mechanical (ignoring the brain..

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

20 is literally Dr Gero

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the jar bit of 20. Idk about 21 yet, I haven't really looked into her character at all.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

17, 18, and 20(himself) were human human before Gero modified them. 16 & 19 are 100% machine. It's just a translation thing.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As Dbz abridged pointed out, he (somehow) stuck his own brain in a mechanical body. Idk if you could call that cyborg or not?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where precisely is the line between cyborg and cybernetically enhanced human?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty fun from what I played. Only con was the beta had network issues.....also auto combos but that's just my opinion

8 years ago | Likes 120 Dislikes 5

Also along with what the others said they are objectively worse than normal combos. So you still have to combo to deal real damage.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The auto combos for new players are a way for them to feel like they are doing epic combos and in DBFZ they function as target combos for

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

more experienced players. Giving access to normal you otherwise wouldn't have.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just like P4AU, the auto combos are complete trash at even a medium level. In order to get good damage you'll have to learn real combos.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think FighterZ went that far, some in P4A were so bad they were basically noob traps, guzzling resources for mediocre damage.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing wrong with auto combos. It allows newcomers to feel like they are doing something so they aren't discouraged from delving deeper.

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

That's exactly how I feel. The only fighting game I really play is smash Bros and that's not a "normal" fighting game but DBFZ Hooked me in

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Huzzah Smash Bros! Great to know that the online there is decent (If we're talking about 4)

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yup! I can only hope I'll be better at DBFZ than I am at smash 4

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you're willing to put in the time to practice/train, then yeah! (It's one of those games where technical skill is really important)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Smash 4 online is pretty bad. There should have been some sort of rank based matchup system. I hardly get matched up with competent players.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also the netcode is nonexistent.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hear the auto combos aren't as good as available manual combos?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is true. Manual combos do more damage.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think the Super at the end does less damage, but the moves leading up to it are unique moves, not watered-down versions of other buttons.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ArcSys(the people who made this, and Guilty Gear) are VERY good at this. Getting started in their games is extremely easy, but mastery is ->

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

very difficult and very rewarding. It lets you feel good when you start, and you can add the more difficult stuff into your play as you go

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s for Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite. FighterZ doesn’t have a manual option. At least not in the betas.

The auto combo system is always on, but manual combos do more damage. The only real reason to do an auto combo is to get a dragon ball.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are definitely manual combos in both the main game and the beta.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can change combos by alternating the buttons and adding jumps and ki blasts but the auto combo system is always on.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It's actually more like target combos in streetfighter than auto combos when used by players who know what they are doing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think people are saying that the 1-button combos are "auto" and any time you mix that up you're in "manual" territory

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do not preorder. Any time you preorder, no matter how guaranteed awesome the game, you actively participate in making games worse.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

And if you know that you are gonna buy the game when it comes out then wait until the very last minute and pre-order so you get all the 1/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pre-order benefits while being able to be happy, because you "tricked" the publishers out with the pre-order bull. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats what I do with steam...Though im not sure if theres a cutoff date

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From large publishers, yes. But don't hesitate to preorder (or kickstart) indie projects that otherwise might not get made.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most of my pre-ordered games have been nintendo games haven't had a bad one yet.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's not just about the risk that a game you preorder might be bad, it's that the industry practice of relying on preorders harms (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

the quality of video gaming across the board, because publishers come to use it as revenue prediction and it also disincentivizes Q/A.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

TBH I would say that the fact that because of advances in tech is whats ruining them and not pre-orders. The ability to patch whenever 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Harms games as it tell them to be more lazy because "We can patch it later, Rush it for Christmas"2/?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I preordered The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth a couple years ago because I loved the original. Wasn't disappointed at all and I still play it.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

The game doesn't matter, it's about reinforcing preorders as revenue indicators and undermining quality control industrywide.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

1) This platform is to restricting for this discussion, but I disagree to an extent. People preorder music albums all the time because they

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2) know they are going to buy it anyway. That's comparable to preordering a game you would end up buying anyway. If you don't like the game,

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3) you can review it accordingly and not preorder the following game from the same company. Once bitten, twice shy. That sort of thing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ooh I just recently got that shit and it's really fun (Recently got a laptop that isn't for school but I share it with my brothers)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I pre-order games that deserve it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You're gonna have to walk me through your assumptions on this one

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Kotaku isnt really the best place anymore.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Okay, but that's not relevant to the question. The article makes a strong argument, no matter where it's hosted.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, but that article succinctly lays out many reasons why preordering hurts the VG consumer in the long run.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Honestly think there are more reasons (Patches and the like) That hurt the consumer in the long run than simply pre-ordering a game

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

No dbz is as good as tenkaichi 3

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

3d is what makes its so different than every other fighting game. I love it

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Tenkaichi and the majority of DBZ fighters were mechanically broken and non-competitive in nature.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Non-competitive doesn't mean not fun.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I agree, they were fun games for what they were and I myself enjoyed the hell out of them. Just think going in that direction would be a bad

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's because they were casual 3D arena fighters, meant to feel like great DBZ experiences rather than great fighting game experiences.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree! It just makes me sad that theres a fantastic new full fledged DBZ fighter out there and people would rather spam supers in Budakai.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What was mechanically broken?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The tenkaichi was one of the worst in terms of mechanics, the ability to slap to the side and negate any projectile super, the "wild sense"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ability that could be timed and used on cool-down to provide auto dodging for an entire match, there are a lot of examples.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seems to me they were more about flash and spectacle and less about being a "hardcore competitive experience" kinda like the Naruto fighters

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No way. Budokai 3.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Bukkake 3 was a mastapeece BAYBEEE

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

And 2 and 1, but those are just my opinion, the first one is fact

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I liked B3, but you can literally dodge for an entire fight by dashing to your right or left.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That never really worked at close range though. That's why you had to combo into all your specials

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The uppercut to land the ultimate from hyper mode was wayyyyy too slow

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also a move you could combo into though. The thing with B3 was it tried really hard to be a legit fighting game and not just "blam blam blam

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Infinite World was better.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually really enjoyed burst limit which so many people seemed to hate

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank god its 2d. I hated that 3d shit

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 6

Yeah they brought it back to the PS2 days, I also prefer the 2D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From my understanding, it's actually in 3D, it's just shaded and animated in a way to look like it's 2D. Guilty Gear Xrd did the same.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, the gameplay only takes place in 2D. I assume that's what he meant. (As opposed to the very many 3D Dragon Ball fighters.)

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah, no Z axis. The graphics are 3D, but the fighting arena is 2D
